haha yeah, playing with really good players always opens my eyes to a lot of new things. i dunno if i should keep sparring with people my level or only try to play ppl who are way better than me. probably a mix of both.
looks like i’ll be visiting socal late january, too, but probably not in time for regionals. sucks.
I just started posting on this forum and I had no idea there were this many foreigners that played sf4 in korea. I’ve been living here for almost 2 years teaching English and going to Grad school. I played mostly at Joyland Plaza in Apgujeong (which no one seems to know about) and a few times at Jungin.
I’m also heading out to socal in a few days and won’t be back til the end of the month. Hopefully when I’m back, I can meet up with a few of you guys. I can beat most of the guys at Joyland but I usually get my ass handed to me in Jungin though I probably learn a lot more from that.
Anyway, I was wondering if someone here could give me directions to Isu Theme Park. I’m thinking of checking out either Isu or Green this Sunday since I haven’t been to either. Maybe I’ll be able to meet some of you then.
isu is at noryanjin station. there’s a little map for you to go to. and green arcade is at like… daerim??? read the forum. i’m dying here from lack of sleep but haha there’s plenty of info! it’s a bit scattered… i think daerim is on page 5 or 6 and isu is on the first page.
both are pretty good but so far, the competition at green seemed better.
woops! isu theme park is actually in isu, not at noryangjin (jungin is at noryangjin).
to get to isu theme park, get off at isu (on lines 4 and 7). go out exit #13. ??? (taepyungyang) department store should be right next to you (i can’t remember if it’ll be on your left or right). either way, find a way to get BEHIND the department store.
you can either go around by finding an alley somewhere to it’s left side, then turning right, or you can even just cut straight through the middle of the department store (it’s not that big, width/lengthwise). once you’re behind the store, isu theme park should be somewhere on your right hand side.
sorry i can’t be more specific, but the basic gist is that it’s somewhere on the street directly behind the department store. and btw the name on the sign will say “?? ???.”
as you probably already know, though, just keep in mind that no matter which arcade you go to, there will be times when people are there and times when they are not.
on a diff note, poongko randomly visited my local arcade (dong bang game world in shinlim) yesterday. he owned up all of us with shit we’ve never seen before. the guy is a true beast. i hope i can play him a lot while i’m in korea.
hey eoneo, is your arcade good? where’s that at???
hahaha sorry pintosaur, i got the arcades messed up! thanks for the correction hahaha isu is at like chongshin university station or something on line 4 IIRC… it’s good for me cuz i don’t need to transfer! but the two or three times i’ve been there, i had only played one guy who would actually challenge back after losing. not saying i won non stop or anything, but after like 5 games or so, people just went and did something else, hence wasting my monster subway trip!
hmm, i might check out Isu tonight then and green or dong bang game world tomorrow if eoneo can provide directions for dong bang. i’m assuming its near shilim stn on line 2. if so, that’d be pretty convenient for me since I won’t have to transfer.
the thing about dongbang is that there’s so many ways to get there. once you find out where exactly it is, you can research on your own how to get there from various buses or from shinlim station. but the most foolproof way for the first time is to go from seoul university station.
from seoul university station: also on line two, right after/before shinlim station. come out exit #3, and get on bus 5515. you can also ride 5515A/B. they run very often because so many people ride it. if you get on in the evening, you may get smothered to death.
the bus will eventually make a counterclockwise roundabout turn to stop at seoul university, then continue down the road where dongbang will be. the bus will eventually make a left turn into a small crowded street that starts with a family mart. get off at the first stop after the left turn, as soon as you pass the family mart. you should be standing in front of a glasses store, and a paris baguette on the other side.
after getting off, walk upward on the street, following the bus’s trail. you will pass by a beautiplex on your left. keep walking upward. you will see a green “bestore” up ahead. take a right here, and after passing a chicken joint and a “tomato” restaurant, you will soon see dong bang on your left.
went to Isu tonight. pretty neat arcade. competition there is definitely a lot better than i’m used to at apgu. its nice that there are people even playing. at apgu, the sf4 machines can go unoccupied for pretty long periods of time.
i’m probably going to hit up either Dong bang or Green tomorrow afternoon. Probably dong bang first since its a bit closer to me. If there’s no one else is playing there, i’ll probably leave and check out Green.
Hey laugh,
yeah i’m surprised there are this many foreigners that play sf in korea. if you’re at either arcade tomorrow, maybe we can meet up, show me some stuff on sf4. i could use the help cause i’m pretty scrubby.
hey eoneo, it was nice playing you and generally get rolled by you today. i’m off to the states in two days so i’ll probably see you around when i get back.
i had a lot of fun too, pinto. keep up the good abel work. i don’t think he gets enough love from what i’ve seen personally.
haha i was looking for a white dude to walk through the door, not a korean dude. luckily, i saw you at jungin last week so i was able to guess who you were.
it’s too bad you’re leaving. when will you be back? i’ll also be gone for the first half of february.
i hope all of us can meet up at the same time soon.
but man, at least the food must be great. i love teh chinese food. 3am raids to oakland chinatown back in the day…
i had the nastiest “mexican food” today at a place called pancho’s in itaewon today. don’t ever go there. the burrito/enchilada/taco dish was so salty we couldn’t eat more than one bite without literally emptying our cups of water. and when they replaced our order with beef fajita, they actually (i can’t believe i forgot to take a picture) served us tortilla’s + bulgogi. it was 100000% bulgogi, no argument. and the total came out to over $20.
have any of you played that one zangief player at jungin?
i can only beat him maybe 1/10 or 1/15. once he knocks me down, it turns into pure rock/paper/scissors. it’s like elf with twice the damage.
what can i do on wake up as ryu when he starts doing cross up jumping short or splash? i can’t uppercut, and blocking leads to either spd or c.short, spd… neither of which i can’t react to in time. i tried to dash out, but that failed.
i’m coming back on January 29th. I’ve been playing a bit at arcade infinity. the sticks in the US are totally different. I didn’t think it would be that big a deal, but it definitely makes a big difference what stick you’re used to.
i went twice, once at around 8ish and once in the afternoon.
during the afternoon, there were a lot of scrubs, only one guy was around my level. later on though, more ppl showed and they were pretty good.
the time i went at 8, there were a ton of ppl there and for the most part, all of them seemed decent, if not good. no one seemed as good as that ryu player in korea, but i only played 2 games and lost both before i left cause there were like 10 ppl waiting to play so it was tough to really gauge but i think they were pretty good.
balrog is a very popular character as are ryu and ken. sagat is also somewhat popular. saw a few chun li’s, occasional gief, vega, bison. sadly, no abel players although the balrog i played against knew all of abel’s tricks so i’m assuming some ppl probably play him.
the stick they had was a ball top. the toughest part of about it was that it didn’t move much and felt less responsive. i dunno, i had trouble even doing rolls and rekkas.
no vipers? i wanna learn her, but man she’s so hard to use.
yeah i have some trouble dashing with those loosey japanese sticks.
i need a stick when i get sf4, but i’m really torn about them. on the one hand, i’ve really come to like the fanta korean sticks. on the other, if most machines in the US (and of course in japan) are gonna have japanese sticks, it might be bad to train on fantas.
just another problem on top of still being unable to decide which console to get. =(
