Korea Thread - SF, Chicken, and Beer

Update on Isu, I stopped by there today and they fixed the cab so both sides are up and working now. Also, I would love to get this community together to play some damn videogames. I am thinking about just opening my apartment on regular friday/saturday/sundays of the month for x amount of hours. This can work well if it just becomes a regular thing that way we can all have something reliable. So I need to gauge some interest, maybe 2/3 weeks a month. Or hell, every weekend if the interest is there. Anyways this is something that I am excited about and would love to do just to get some games in with people. As for setup I have an Xbox and asus monitor that I use. I only have one stick and one pad so people will need to bring their own controller. I also have another Lcd tv that we could potentially hookup another system to if others want to bring setups. I have plenty of room in my apartment I keep my current setup in an extra bedroom, but we could open up other rooms/tables to setups if need be. Also I live off Line 4 Nowon Station or Line 7 Junggye. I sure hope there is some positive feedback to this. It seems like we have a fair amount of players here in the Seoul area, LET US UNITE! Hope to hear from you guys soon.

I’m down

i put this on dave’s esl, but you guys could probably help me out with this…

who do you guys use for internet? i just moved to a new apartment and i’m using C&M wireless…fucking terrible. i’m getting hella lag. are you guys on KT, SK or something else?

Thurst or any other ESLs that want to contribute.

I’m doing research. I need your help. If you can help me out with these questions, please PM me with your answers. Just copy my questions and put your answers after them.

  1. What kind of educational institue are you teaching at? (Public school/private school/hagwon/university/other–please specify)
  2. What opinions can you give regarding your experience with teaching ESL in Korea?
  3. Do you deal with backstage politics much? (Eg. Parent opinion, overbearing principals, inter/intradepartment bickering, etc.)
  4. If you answered yes to 3, explain what you deal with, the amount you deal with, and how it affects your ability to teach.
  5. How much are you paid monthly? KRW suffices.
  6. Are you regularly paid on time, on the agreed upon date within your contract?
  7. What are your living conditions? (Eg. Dorm living with other teachers, your own apartment, your own house, living in a PC bang, etc.)
  8. Were you provided these accomodations by your employer?
  9. Are these accomodations paid for by your employer?
  10. If no, how much are you paying for said accomodations?
  11. How big are your accomodations?
  12. What condition are your accomodations in?
  13. How much do you spend on utilities?
  14. Have you had any major contract disputes?
  15. Have you ever been asked to work overtime without compensation?

All these answers will be useful to me in comparing teaching in Korea to teaching in China in a Korean school. Thanks.

Hey guys. I just got stationed at Osan AB, and I’m trying either good arcades or good sessions. Can you guys help me out?

not sure where osan is, but the arcades i know of are near shinchun (not shinchon), chunho, and isu.
do you play online?

I can. I’m just waiting for a place to stay to open up. Long story. Osan is in Gyeonggi. If there’s something close to there, let me know.

Most places in Gyeonggi are on the Korail line, so you can take the subway into Seoul, it’s just over an hour to get in. Let me check it out quickly.

Line 1. Yeah, even getting to Cafe ID is an hour exactly. Isu…forget about it, it’s like two hours just because trains at your transfer point on line 4 come infrequently.

I’m really not sure about any kind of SF scene outside of Seoul, especially in Gyeonggi, and it’s really hard to geographically guage what’s near you, because Gyeonggi basically encircles Seoul in like a crescent shape. For instance, Laugh lives in Gyeonggi, but he lives north of Seoul, and you do too, but you’re south of it. So even if I were to tell you “oh, there’s SF in Gyeonggi,” but it’s in like Gapyeong or something, you’re still SOL without a car, because to Gapyeong from Osan on the train is like 3 1/2 hours.

It’s not much help, I know, but yeah, Cafe ID is the best place we know of for you to get to. I think it’s at Hongdae station on line 2, but don’t quote me on it, never been there.

Sorry for the super late reply. I was trying to get Persona 4 Arena. I just ended up getting it off PlayAsia. Do you know the name or address of the gaming shop in Gongju? I’m actually debating on getting TTT2 now. Do you guys know if the Korean version will have English text? Reading the description on PlayAsia for the Asian version of the game, the text is claimed to be in English. Does anyone have any confirmation or experience with buying games in Korea in the past?

Thanks

nah, sorry. but if you’re familiar with gongju, it’s near the main post office in the old city (중구) mind you, i haven’t lived in gongju in 2 years so it could conceivably not be around anymore.

if that link doesn’t work for you just punch 36.454479, 127.123875 into google maps.

as far as shops in daejeon, i found this on another forum:

Hi Guys,

Quick questions for anyone with a Korean bought copy of Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition on PS3. Are the 4 extra fighters on disc? Or DLC coded? Is the game full English like SS4 was?

the game will run in full english and im pretty sure the characters are on disc.

where is the best place to play AE 2012 in seoul?

Yo Allan.

I’ll give you the places I know of. There’s an arcade at Isu station in Seoul. Not too far from the station, I have a video on my Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/MissingPersonSRK

That one has one cabinet, and is AE 2012.

The next one I know about is at Cheonho station. Pretty decent jaunt from most key places in Seoul, but it had two cabs last time I was there, don’t know if they’ve been upgraded. I also have a video explaining how to get to their on my channel.

There’s apparently 2012 at Hyehwa station, but I’ve never been there, so I don’t know how to tell you to get there.

There’s also 2012 at CafeID at Hongdae. I’ve never been there, but I think directions are buried somewhere in here.

That’s all of them that I know about. Not sure about the crowds there. If Infiltration goes to an arcade, he usually ends up at Isu because it’s closest to him. I think Poongko frequents ID. One thing to bear in mind is that Isu/Cheonho/Hyehwa all have Korean parts on their cabs. I think ID is the only place in Seoul that uses Japanese parts, so just a heads up.

Okay, so I heard from a secondhand source that Korea actually has a strong Super Turbo scene. Is there any fact behind this? I heard a while back that they still play CE (or was it HF?) out there, but what about ST?

I hadn’t seen a cabinet in Seoul. I met a guy in Cheonho who called himself Shim who said he played ST, and plays on GGPO. He may still go out to Cheonho, but I don’t know.

I am living in Wangsimini.

Does somene know where is the CafeID Location?

Well that gives the address, but that’s almost useless unless you’re grabbing a cab to go there.

I know that directions from the Subway/Bus is somewhere in this thread. Where? I don’t know.

anyone looking to buy a dual modded TE stick? i got one for sale if anyone is interested. pm me or leave me an email at lunar13@gmail.com
