(I’m not sure why you would wish the fate of Sega upon Kojima. What has the man done to you for you to curse him so?)
I’m not sure what’s truly counts as “profitable” in Konami’s eyes, but even as someone who has yet to touch Metal Gear Solid, Kojima’s tendencies and the accompanying budgets being “overblown” to them wouldn’t really surprise me even if I actually like Kojima from what little I know of him.
Regardless, even if it was the case where Kojima was somehow 100% at fault, which I don’t believe, that doesn’t excuse any of the other bullshit and stupidity that I’ve heard they’ve been doing. At this point it’s basically like they’re trying to fail. They’re becoming the Uwe Boll of gaming.
This isn’t going to end with Konami, either. Much of the Japanese video game industry will follow suit in the years to come. Japanese video game industry is shadow of it’s former self, it sucks. Too much trend hopping by major companies, no trend setters over there.
Whatever. I got MGSV. They can die now. Fucking LoS2 was ass. The Dracula wondering around in shadows as a rat. Bullshit. Combat was the only thing I enjoyed about that game. At least they went out on a high note.
There goes chapter 3… shit. Ah well Evo is the best football game hands down so if they are gonna keep something they might as well keep their best property going.
The same is true of Sega. Really all the best developers from the day are dead or near dead, besides Nintendo and arguably Capcom.
Someone posted a list of Konami and Hudson IP’s and a RIP. All I could think was, all the listed IP’s had been dead for a long, long time, most having died in the PS2 era or earlier. Some of the IP listed died in the NES era lol.
You should know better than to think that all of that money goes directly to Konami. You have to also consider retailer margins, distribution, currency conversion (remember, the Japanese yen is strong, so this hurts international profits), platform royalties, and other costs. With those considerations, around half of the store price of the game goes to them, more or less (and because of the aforementioned currency conversion, probably less).
So assuming a $60 retail price, you’re looking at about $90m for a game that cost $80m.
Not a very impressive return for such a long investment.
(We might as well rename the thread “R.I.P. Konami” at this point.)
Not that I’m defending Raz0r or anything, but I’m interested in what the general time-frame is for video game companies typically expecting a return of profit on their releases and how much of a profit they expect. I know breaking even is typically bad, but beyond that I’m unsure. I ask in part because MGS V has only been out for less than a month, hasn’t it?
Regardless, does anyone know the average answer for this (if there is one)?
What people don’t understand is that Metal Gear V cost 80 million to develop over a period of 5 years.
So it’s going to need to sell something like 3 million just to break even.
Which it will do, but that’s 1 IP with an enormous built in fanbase. And that 1 IP has kept Konami’s console business alive for the better part of 2 decades, with PES and dancing games filling out the rest of it.
And all it takes is a game like NeverDead or N3 or whatever else they’d released that’s fallen on it’s face, to erase all those MGS profits. It’s not worth the risk, when they can pump out cell phone games with small budgets that make it back 10X over and over.
Just to give you an idea of why this is happening: Metal Slug Defense, a mobile game that re-uses assets from 20 year old MS games, has 50 million downloads. That game alone has made and will make more money than Metal Gear V, and there have been countless other successful games pumped out since it’s release in 2012. So that’s what this is about, there is simply way more money and way less risk to be made on smaller platforms. You don’t have to worry about a single AAA flop burying the entire company, and nearly all of the major Japanese studios have gone this route. Hardcore gamers have been holding their fingers in their ears and pretending this hasn’t happened and continue to do so, then act surprised when announcements like this come.
Yeah idk what happened man. I’d say it’s partially the devs and partially Western consumers(only saying this because we all in the West), but here Japanese games don’t go as hard as they used to in terms of sales for whatever reason. So we don’t get shit here which i guess is losing sales for the dev.
Plus I understand that mobile shit is popping over there, but im sure it’s just a few games over there that are hitting, and it’s not like every single mobile game is gonna be angry birds level. So as a company who needs to make big money off big products, focusing on all mobile shit is dumb, espcially since most mobile games are like 2 dollars or even FTP sometimes. And idk how and if companies make money from FTP assuming alot people aren’t buying add ons and etc.
But yeah seems like all this non sense started last gen. Plus I don’t see how a small companies like Atlus can stay afloat nicely, or companies that publish those niche anime fighters, moe rpgs and alla that stay afloat, when they localize their games sometimes with dubs and physical releases, and obviously those games not selling millions, but they seem to be doing fine. All though I know they aren’t spending as much on their games as an AAA title but still man
Outside of Microsoft funded (RYSE, TitanFall, Dead Rising 3) or Sony funded (Street Fighter V, The Order 1886, DriveClub) or yearly IP’s (Call of Dookie, Madden) where are the games?
There were a lot of great announcement’s from mid tier Japanese devs for the PS4, but much if not most of it are just enhanced PS3 or PSP titles.
Mobile has been killing console games for a long, long time, as most hardcore gamers continue to hold their fingers in their ears and go “la la la I can’t hear you”.
This announcement from Konami is no suprise to anyone who examines the industry and is honest with themselves.
