KOF12 Underground Tournament in LA!

Glad everyone had fun, wish I could have been there!

I don’t know about cali players dominating KOF XII. Portland players are da best!!!

O SNAP! Portland vs. Cali XII teams. GET HYPE!

is that how it goes? >.>

Congrats to the AI crew and Noc. I was gonna go, but I got lazy.

Good Shit to Reynald and whole AI crew

there were Portland people at the tournament? I didn’t even know anyone was going, lol…

as for the whole So Cal vs. Portland thing - well, I don’t think we have as many players up here from what I can tell. I don’t know who all went out to the tournament (Joel maybe?), but you can’t really judge all of us based on that when I think two of the better players here were at a different local tourney today.

If home version is out in time for EVO, I look forward to playing any AI players that will be attending

also: good shit Noc!

The Venue: 84 participants in total according to Mr Wizard, the venue which is a club in hollywood and was only about 60% full if you asked me, the cosplay turn out was low (3 in total) and there wasn’t so many spectators as expected. Either Ignition Entertainment, Gamestop, or Sony hired the entourage of “girls” for entertainment (pillow fights, pictures, and face painting to look like you were beaten up after a King of Fighter’s tourney, no joke) but they were mainly eye candy for the male gamers =).

We all agreed that the event was a massive success and it really felt that Ignition really looked out for us (prizes, souvenirs, and the overall atmosphere was fun ) as opposed to just a publicity stunt. Basically an event that ppl would actually want to attend again. Shane was amazing a great MC for the event and an awesome guy all-around, Mr Wizard and him had a hilarious exhibition match and even the president of Ignition Entertainment attended the tournament–now really, how cool is that (he got to round 2)? Shane hinted that this is only a preview of many things to come so we were all excited to see what they have installed for us in the near future. All in all, Ignition Entertainment threw a kickass official tourney (first one ever in the US?) with bumping music, food and drinks.

I will get some pictures up along with some movies as soon as I get them uploaded.

Thank the cleanup crew and Shane for letting us take the “score card” and the huge poster/canvas (hope we don’t get you in trouble!)

The Tourney:
Hats off to Nocturnal, took me out in the quarter-final (excuse or no excuse, he beat me) so I tied with Oscar, Duc, and Francisco for 5th place…next time we meet in AI or online I will get my revenge as it was somewhat of a close match

I’m just glad we all made it to the top 8, my buddy Reynald got the cabinet and is stashing it at my place–so I’m ok with that :wgrin:, the cabinet is BEAUTIFUL.

In all fairness, there were a lot of ppl playing the game for the first time today (once again, AI is the only place that has XII in california as far as we know) so the results are NOT as glamorous as it sounds on paper.

The semi-final’s round between RJ and Jon was amazingly close, probably a slightly better round to watch than the finals itself.

Now for the what if game and I understand a win is a win but we’ll learn from this coz next time:

-If we knew that the Finals game between Reynald and Jon, would involve a noticeable input lag from the PS3 to project it on to the huge-ass display, the two of them would have opted to play on a normal screen (8 PS3 consoles were setup for the tourney, 3 Japanese cabinets were used for exhibition matches only, and one big ass projected screen for the finals which lagged when you played–but to the viewers looked normal; everyone playing on the projector screen for exhibition who I asked, reported the same aforementioned lag).

-Everyone complained about the flimsy drink stands (used for placing drinks in a club) that served as our table for our Hori Fighting Joysticks.

-Note to self: Next time I walk up to a setup with stiff joysticks, I should just opt to play on a different station which I regret not doing. Incidently, Oscar refused to play on the very same station on an earlier match as well, also confirming the sub-par joysticks (Nocturnal, remember when I grabbed some napkins to wipe down our station, that’s when I thought maybe I should say something–come to think of it, who knows if someone spilled some drink on the joystick earlier making it sticky which was what I was probably wiping lol). Jon and Lyvar’s match was also delayed coz they refused to play on another set of sub-par joysticks.

were the joysticks stiff because of the drinks? or just the way they were made? there were a mix of different brands of joysticks used?

There were 8 PS3 tourney stations setup with two Hori Joysticks each. At least 5 of the stations worked out fine as I personally tested out myself.

One of them was particularly bad which I mentioned before. I suspected that maybe someone spill their drink, who knows. Before the match the table was a lil wet so I offered to wipe it down with a napkin (Pete, Gibby, and Nocturnal should remember). The actual joystick was stiff as hell on that particular station (at least the spot I was playing). Oscar (top 8), confirms what I said as well as he refused to play on that same station due to the same reason (which in hindsight, I should have done).

Not to take anything from Nocturnal, he did beat me but it was a close match. He won first game, I took second and the third match we went to round 5.

No no no, we’re not trying to start anything. We’ll be happy to play on the Playstation network come July 8th, till then we don’t know who’s better–I’m sure some top Portland players wanted to attend but couldn’t. I REALLY respect the Portland guy for coming all the way to Cali man, if you’re still around, come to AI and check it out.

The pictures:

Woah. Those Terry Bogard shirts look hard.

I’d be happy to play against Oregon players myself at EVO…Dark Geese vs. Oregon players in KOFXII…go ahead get that going. :wgrin: (even with only one week to play the game possibly)

Also forget about this Austin player, you all know I’m gonna rep Texas/Ciudad Juarez, Mexico in this game HARDBODY…

Noone mentioning the movie trailer makes me scared of how awful it was…

If you are having that cab at your place you have to take some vids of the cab and some games.

I remember someone used and threw a flaming sword in a fight scene in the trailer:looney:

Hey guys.
I went to this thing also and had a great time.
Mr.Wizard was hella cool and so were pretty much all the players.
Got eliminated by the 4th round by a Guy who used Raiden, Terry and someone else (Joe I think) but had a great time.

It was nice to speak with the 3 execs from SNK about the game, my Japanese was efficient enough to just talk with them. Even took a picture with them also. Sad mostly everyone was focused on da bitches :P.

I wish I could of gotten to know some of you guys
Live in Rancho Cucamonga, will start going back to AI starting tomorrow,
haven’t been since they just got in Sengoku Basara X. 08:arazz:

LMAO that sounds so bad its awesome! Did SNK or ignition tease anything on XII or any other of their properties, did they respond to K’ and Mai portraits lol? Were we finally able to play KOF 1993?!

next time, no pillowfights or other gimmicks. its sad to see mainstream media try to “get hype” and relate to players. And just because we’re gamers, doesn’t mean we actually like 8-bit retro remixed music.

I had a good time there. It was coo seeing most of you guys again. I still can’t believe I accidentally picked Beni in my match. I still would have lost to R.J. but it pissed me off.

The only good players I came across were the AI guys. Everyone else I played, or watched play mashed like a madman. I hopped on the viewlix when I lost and just beat random people on that. Greatest thing was hearing people complain about the game being broken if they got OCV’ed.

Props to Wiz for running the tourney, especially without a mic and all that music drowning out his voice. Also props to James Chen for helping him out. The Ignition people also did a great job with the refreshments and prizes, but I think having things like the pillow fights were pointless. It was funny as hell watching a bunch of random people hit on the girls at the show thinking that the girls are into them.

Congrats to the winners. The prizes you guys got were good. It seems like they gave Noc the leftovers :stuck_out_tongue:

What did the winners get besides 1st?
