Can you confirm if thereās some sort of lifebar scaling? If not, then what does the lifebar color change at 30% give to the player? Also, donāt you think normals and specials could do more damage? And what about giving the losing team a whole meter every time a character loses? I know that in previous KOF, the losing team only gains a slot each time, but aināt a whole meter like, too much?
Besides XI where the gaining a bar for losing a character was lifted from, in 98 there is an affection system that can either give you meter or take meter from you. Some characters either like other members of the roster, hate other members from the roster, or are indifferent. Things like Iori hates Kyo, Blue Mary likes Terry, Heavy D hates everyone, etc. You can check affection in the order select by pressing start. If the character who is coming in likes the character that just died, you get a bar. If they hate the character, you lose a bar. If they are neutral nothing happens.
Basically this is a long explanation to say that there is precedence in the series for the mechanic and itās not all that crazy.
Iām half tempted to go back and start relearning 98 all over again. Though honestly the only thing preventing me is being stuck on wifi making playing on Fightcade a selfish endeavor.
@BzChoy I canāt confirm for true certainty, but I didnāt observe any scaling. KOF hasnāt had scaling in any of its titles as far as I know and the same I have observed thus far in KOFXIV. And I have no idea what red health does in KOFXIV since Climaxes could be done with 3 stocks at any health increment (well other than 0 haha.) I think normals and specials do just the right amount of damage considering how combos and meter management work in this game. At least normals work well so you can keep out opponents in a meaningful manner of deterrence. A whole stock is alright for me, itās the only come back mechanic so far. @JohnGrimm mentioned before that you can gain stock through character relationships, but thatās KOF97. KOF98 had it too, but what determined it was that it was randomized based on the internal date of the Neogeo machine. Thatās why on KOF98, itās always the same on GGPO/Fightcade because itās always the same date due to the savestate until you restart the game using F3 and the relationship/mood chart changes.
@Saitsu Iād say go for it. I was the subhuman being who played KOF98 on GGPO with wifi up until like 2013 on a pad. The thing is I didnāt feel lag but I donāt know about my opponent. But, it got me to where I am today. Of course I only play wired now. If the game feels good to you on wifi, again, go for it!
@Fatal1ty_93_RUS Brevity is the soul of wit. Conciseness is the body of clarity.
Ha, true that. No, but seriously, that post was fucking amazing. Not gonna lie, Iām actually kinda excited for the game now, SNK definitely induced some faith in its success now. It also helps that Sony is marketing the game as its events on both TGS and PSX now, which hopefully will help to sell it to the broader audience than KOF13
I donāt even remember KOF13 being marketed at all other than maybe at E3 by Atlus since they were the western publisher for the game
Looking forward to your further impressions, maybe even with the next build and more characters
Well the only thing I was sad to see with the new Neomax supers (or whatever they are called) was that Leonaās hair doesnt turn red anymoreā¦small thing but I loved it. To this day I still believe her coolest super was the dynamite in the stomach and then screaming as you exploded
In terms of character designs, I really hope that they make Ralf, Clark, & Athena look very slim again before their atrocious designs came within both KOF XII & XIII. They looked terrible in those games!
And if Vice & Mature are back (which is looking most likely), have them go back to wearing dresses! I miss those.
What I find odd is that for the start of a new saga the game doesnāt have a new lead. SNK usually has a new lead when starting a new saga or spin-off. Having Kyo and Iori front and center is unusual.
To be fair, a new lead could very well still come. It could be theyāre using the known characters to get people into how the game plays and get hype before they introduce new faces and the new story so the transition is more comfortable.
What they need to do is to a reversal for once. Kyo was lead in like, the beginning few KoF games. Iori was mostly 2nd string and a rival (up until 1997, where he did become part of the new hero team. Sorta.)
He needs his own team again (that are not ghosts, lol) and bring some ādonāt give a fuckā heroism to the plate.
