KOF XIV General Discussion - King of Fighters XIV Arcade Ver. Burn 2 Fight cabinets from Taito!

We’re all over the graphics at this point. The only thing most people are still annoyed about design-wise is Kyo’s current design. They gotta part his hair and completely unzip his jacket, then he’ll be perfect.

The only thing I can think of is that they’re saving Ash Saga originals and such is to keep the distinction between KOFXIII and KOFXIV (Ash Saga and New Saga.) If I recall correctly from around 2013 or before (and I could always be wrong) from a little bird somewhere is that they did finish those sprites they had for Oswald, Chang, Momoko, etc. for KOFXIII. It’s just they didn’t know whether to release them as DLC or wait to put them in the next KOF (and obviously different plans have been made since then.) My speculation is that if they ever do a KOFXIIIUM, the distinctness of the character list would be lost if they had those Ash Saga characters appeared in KOFXIV and the new saga. So if they ever update KOFXIII later, they still have a big hand to play without cannibalizing the interest of each game. KOFXIII and KOFXIV are two different beasts in terms of game play, I’d say keep the cast list different for the most part as well.

I think the issue for KOFXIII is that they initially ran out of development time to make the era defining characters appear in KOFXIII. The other sagas had their antagonist teams by at least their own saga’s climax (97 and 01) by having the Orochi/New Faces Team and NESTS Team respectively. KOFXIII wasn’t able to put in Botan, Shroom, and Rimelo and really have a distinct character roster. I think the most defining characters of KOFXIII were the ones that made their KOF debut such as Raiden, Hwa Jai, Mr. Karate, and technically Saiki, but that cast list pales in comparison to have something that really screams Ash Saga. I think it’ll be a disservice to both KOFXIII and KOFXIV if they just threw in a bunch of Ash Saga originals into KOFXIV. I’d say if my source was really correct and if my memory is to serve correctly, then I’d say they should release KOFXIIIum later with those characters that define the Ash Saga such as the Those from the Past Team, Oswald, Momoko, Malin, Adelheid, and such (and fix the hit boxes and collision boxes) to make the definitive Ash Saga game.

KOF98umFE and KOF02um stand out from each other with having different distinct characters and the different prevalence of high/top tiers in competitive play. The only thing that’s similar is that King is top tier in both games. KOFXIIIum could be a game that does it similarly and could go the 02um route and make their own saga protagonists top tier like how K’ became in 02um as opposed to only being mid tier in 02og.

I guess what really irks me is when people say they want a particular character or they won’t play that KOF game. They aren’t really KOF fans, they’re just a character fan. They won’t bother experimenting or having fun with new characters and actually compete. Typically, I feel like these kinds of players shouldn’t even be on this website. Go to a fan site, not a forum for competitive play. If I like a particular character, I just learn the game they’re in. Do I want to play American Sports Team and Terry? I’ll play KOF98umFE. Do I want to play my most favorite version of Kyo as well as play as Hinako? I’ll play 02um. Do I want to play Duck King and get irritated at KGO? I’ll play KOFXI.

I guess I’m just tired of all this GameFAQs-esque level of complaining and wish listing. If you don’t like a game because of how it plays or lacks a character, that’s just how it is and move on to a different game or series. As much as I don’t like KOFXIII, I’m not going to incessantly and constantly complain about it ad nauseam. I can always just hop on Fightcade and play KOF98 and work on my fundamentals.

I like seeing all of the newcomers and think they are cool. But I realize there are lots of cool vets that aren’t making the cut. But in the end I think fresh new characters should be the priority. If x character didn’t charm y gamer’s pants off in 2003, he probably won’t grab their attention now. While if x character charmed y player in 2003 but didn’t return in 2016, being that KoF requires that you learn at least 3 characters, one can assume that player y has other characters that they like and probably won’t drop the game because they lost their one character. And if they lost all of their characters, they still might like a new character. In order to make as much money as possible you have to try to appeal to as many potential customers as possible. For as much of a “success” KoF XIII was, keeping it simple with as little newcomers as possible obviously didn’t make it successful enough or we would be looking at a lot less newcomers I guarantee.
Or I could not know what I’m talking about, because I didn’t really know or care much about KoF before the psx trailer, and have no place speaking on such matters since I’m just a bandwagon dude who thinks he likes KoF the most now

Supreme roster

though why is the idol singer girl blonde and bigger eyes than Kula? I thought she would look more asian and with natural black hair, like Kim’s master’s wife, except younger.

it’s a video game

i don’t really see anyone saying “no akuma? im not playing then” for this game though. a lot of complaining yes, but when you get a roster of 50 and your character still doesn’t make the cut i can understand some being a little disappointed.

With the game being in 3d, I hope they add alternate costumes to the game.

They could add classic and brand new costumes. And perhaps even some cool themed stuff.

A breakdown of the roster:

-Why is daimon in this game. He single handily ruins KOF98 yet the asshole is still here somehow. He was never a fan favourite, should have replaced him with a character who deserves it.

-Andy isn’t as bad but why him over rock. Andy has never been as popular terry or rock yet he makes the cut wtf.

-A butler makes it over yamazaki, pure nonsense. Once again a fan favourite being shafted in favor of a nobody.

-No Vanessa of whip or any KOFXI characters yet fucking Chang and choi are in the game. Can someone plz explain why Chang and choi are in this game and Vanessa and whip aren’t.

-Why don’t we have any garou and real bout characters coming back along with some MI characters.

rock is a kid in KoF im sure this has been told to you before and how are you still bitching about daimon,i’ve never seen anyone bitch this long about one thing in my life

Dude, Daimon is the essence of KOF. You can’t leave him out. Same with Chang and Choi.

Everyone else seems to have already explained why Rock wouldn’t work, but Andy is also a KOF staple. And besides, we have Geese himself, why settle for less?

The butler thing I’ll give you. Yamazaki would have been hype.

Chang and Choi make up the bulk of a certain team that always makes it in. Vanessa and Whip never really work on any other teams. Seriously, Whip is a weird fourth person on both the NESTS and Ikari teams, behind much more iconic characters that can’t get swapped out, and I can’t see any teams Vanessa would’ve worked on this time around.

Well, I remember the president at time, Ryo Mizufune, trying to shut down the gaming division a little after the console version of XIII was released. I don’t remember anyone saying they had plans for future DLC or the next game at the time. Only the development of the Climax version.

And if we go by that Mai image in the gallery:

There are 22 characters missing in XIII not counting Silber, Gai, Hayate, Jazu, Magaki and Mukai. If we go by only “Ash saga new characters”, then we could count only Malin, Oswald, Momoko, Adelheid and Shion which would be more plausible to be added in a hypothetical update (Maybe Botan, Shroom and Rimelo). Maki too depending on what you consider a new character or not.

But I say it wouldn’t hurt a future XIIIUM if 2 or 3 characters of that saga were in XIV.

I like Chang. Tung was in the RealBout series and KOFXI(console version), so, there you have it. And if you hate Goro Daimon so much, play a little of 2002vanilla and tell me what you think about Angel and Choi.

Spoiler

I don’t know how the like/dislike system works here, but thanks for the info.

*I see what you’re saying, but I can’t entirely agree with you here. I agree with you on your first point of people who say they won’t play a game, much less buy one, because of one character not getting in aren’t fans of the series. “No Mai, no buy”, springs to my mind while reading that. Similarly, I agree to an extent that I too am tired of people saying they miss character x making it to the roster. However, I don’t agree with the line of thought that the players in question should just stick to the games their favorite character appear in.

I actually really appreciate players who are character specialists since their knowledge of characters toolset and matchups is not only impressive but informative. For example, something that worked 2 games ago in a matchup against character z may now work for character y and x in a new game. Or a move property or character specific combo may now be uniform due to a change in game system. With that stated, even character specialist like Dagger G (Guile player) played Remy in 3s since that was the closest proxy. I think maybe the distinction should be made that players who specialize in characters/favorite characters have a right to do a little bellyaching since they actually contribute to the community.

But you know as well as me that pre-release of games, specially KoF games, generate a lot of casual buzz and then there’s only a handful of players after 5 months. Hopefully that changes with 14’s release but I’m not holding my breath.

Wonder if the South American girl is black or hispanic.

I thought she was hsiapnic, but she seems to be very similar to Michiko from Michiko and Hatchin, and she’s black.

Laura and Christie Montiero are Afro-Brazilian while Katarina is Hispanic-Brazilian. And Angel is Mexican.

Also Lisa and Jacqui (who are African American) have similar skin tones to the Afro-Brazilian girls.

Seems like Hispanic females have lightish brown skin while Black females are

So perhaps she is Afro-South American? Same for the Handicap Boxer.

the issue with the first screenshot and gameplay is that the models had that weird drawing model bodyshape.

the characters look like they are differently shaped now which is much better. some of the animations look very much “SNK’s first 3d attempt” but its not the worst start ever

Maybe she’s both.

Will you shut the Fuck up about the graphics Already?

I’m assuming but if you have a PC/laptop you should go get Fightcade, KOF98, and the neogeo bios so you can start playing the game now, they also have a few KOFs on Steam if you wanna try some of the newer/revised titles.

If I were in your shoes I’d probably go with characters I’m comfortable with (do you like shotos/Ken/Ryu type characters? KOF got’em, grapplers? KOF got some of the best in the genre, rushdown? certainly) to get a feel for the game first then go from there.

Daimon deserves it. they are legendary partner of Kyo and Benimaru since KOF94.

Rock is a nobody compared to Andy. Andy is more popular than you realize, and his connections to Terry, Joe, and Mai are more important. You can’t have the iconic Fatal Fury team without Andy. And you know MOTW is the worst selling fighting game of its time. Rock is a cool design but he’s a scrawny scrub compared to Andy.

Agree that Yamazaki would make that team better, but the butler could earn new fans like Oswald did.

I prefer Vanessa and Whip myself, but still, Chang and Choi are back because they are KOF legends since KOF94, and KOFXIV is the first time they can present the original team planned for KOF94, which was the Prisoners/criminal team.

MI is a reject series. there’s already enough Garou in KOFXIV roster. and KOF isn’t just about Garou/Fatal Fury. Be grateful Geese is back with his own Garou themed team. and Kim still has his own team and he’s also from Garou/Fatal Fury series. at least 3 Garou themed teams. Even Tung is a part of the heroes team. KOF fans that prefer something else, would say there is TOO MUCH Garou/Fatal Fury representation.

KOFXIV roster already has a perfect balance of old and new. even though KOF2002UM has more fighters, KOFXIV already looks to be the most fascinating, diversified and charismatic KOF roster to date. and it can only get greater with sequels.

Adelheid was awesome, he should be back.
