You sit and play defense you LOSE.
That’s because the offensive front is so mindless.
I myself play somewhat of a keep away game, just to annoy the hell out of the guy who’s trying to endlessly hyperhop my ass into oblivion.
If you sit stock still and play defense, yes, you will lose. But if you have the right character and have good spacing/poking skills, you can play defense. Keep away works as long as you know what you are doing.
Care to throw out some examples of good defensive / keep away characters then?
The only one I can think of at the moment is Ash ;p.
I think Eiji is a good example. He can rush too, and in KOF it’s usually in your interest to attack if you knock someone down, but against characters like Gato who are insanely good pokers/rushers, Eiji works really well as a keepaway character.
Kula can also play keepaway pretty well. This is due to her superior poking ability combined with one of the best uppercuts in the game. Make her a leader and she can play defense so easily it’s not even funny. Kula can do pretty much everything, though. That’s why she’s top. She can easily function as a one-man army even if you don’t have her as your leader.
why would you play D with gai and shen?
suicide x_X
KGO,ninja,Athena(L),Adel(L),& BJ are good turtlers =)
Gai and Shen are definitely not defensive characters, though Gai does have some defensive tools. Mostly high-risk though, you are way better off attacking with him. Shen is nothing but rushdown.
Defensive chars: (IMO)
-Jenet
-Hayate
-Silver
-Eiji
-Jazu*
Jazu has a * because he needs space to whore his projectiles. He can’t really do anything when cornerd or he’s getting hoped all over.
Going back to the knowitall that said I could be punished for rolling at my opponent, that only works with people that have REALLY good B’s or A’s(Kyo, Duck, Mary, Gai).
Wouldn’t Kasumi be considered a defensive character?
Yes, but she also kind of stinks.
If you played Oswald as leader, I can assure you the “offensive front” against you wouldn’t be as mindless.
Proper movement and use of pokes is really important. You won’t win by sitting around letting your opponent come to you, you have to move about and ruin their setups by being in the wrong place, disrupt their rhythm with your pokes, CD counter (well, E counter) to get them off you, etc. That isn’t to say that offense isn’t really good in XI, because it is… but it’s hardly mindless against someone who is making use of their tools.
Well defensive styles of play in this game are a bit different from most in what I’ve seen. Someone playing defensively more tends to play runaway, and just generally try to pick when and where you’re in range of each other and for what intended attack. Not so much like other games where a defensive player just turtles by blocking a whole lot.
Actually I have the problem of not blocking enough…
why is kasumi defensive, because she has counters? I think she stinks on defense. Only way to win with her is to rush it down and force mixups and then switch out if you land the rekka or the command grab, though I prefer the rekka as it leaves them on the ground.
Eiji is good defense for sure or at least good runaway. Jazu can actually stop hyper hoppers farely well ifyou just do a well timed qcb+p, it’s got alot of priority and will at least trade with most things. I also sometimes do jump back E against HH.
Come on C-son, you know I wasn’t flat out talking about just SITTING in one spot and hoping to win. It’s just obvious that being defensive in this game will not really reward you as much as being offensive. Oswald is one of those top tier characters that actually requires skill in both spacing and execution, but the same can hardly be said for Kula / Gato, and really you rarely see Oswald on a team outside of KGO, but you see plenty of xx, K, G, or a mixture of K or G and other randoms, so I guess that’s why I said it was mindless.
I’m an odd one in that I’d rather keep away then stay on you in this game I suppose.
;p
Eh, you could play Oswald on a non-KGO team, it’s just that the KG combination is so good, why wouldn’t you play them at the highest levels if you really wanted to win?
I see Oswald’s problem being that he’s not really good at setting the pace of the match on his own. He needs someone else to set him up, either by earning meter for him or starting offense and then tagging him in so he can do one of his ridiculous kill combos and then have a free chance to attack the incoming character so he can start his silly mixups.
Rolling has recovery frames. Rolling through an opponent means those frames are back-turned. Most (if not all) characters get a free close heavy into combo. Characters like Maxima will absolutely eat this play style for breakfast with his D. But this stuff will get learnt once someone takes advantage of it. But before that even happens you will probably get hurricanranaed out of most of them by a generic Clark player. It really is not a good strategy.
I think the more important thing would be to seriously work on the jumping. Lots of super-jumps with early attacks, I’m assuming they are failed hyper-hops. I’d concentrate fully on working out what is wrong with your technique or if it is a stick problem find some way to work around it. Or if the jumps were a deliberate play-style then once again, why are you not using Maxima? He is one of the few who can do this effectively.
Good points Slapper but NOBODY uses Maxima so I’m mostly eating Kyo or Mary’s St.B if I try to roll out of thier pokefest and yes my buddy has DP+K’ed me to death with Clark a shitload of times when I’ve tried to roll out of a corner.
I needa use Maxima more…
That’s why I said mindless.
It’s just my silly little opinion though ;p.
Against most of the cast, Gato and Kula ARE pretty mindless. “LOL my shit beats all your shit, watch me spam this one move and you can’t do anything about it!”
But eh, pick the right characters and play smart.
AF learn to hop. In the first two videos you didnt hop once(I think). In the fourth one you did hop like twice with Whip, but she was far away from the opponent. Also you missed many combos…instead of spamming d+D, do a normal combo. Spam Gai’s qcb+E, u+C and f+C(when you’ve cornered someone, then mixup or something). The u+C is his best aa and has good recovery.
