KoF noob trying to get into it

To the OP:

I think it might just be what you’re used to. Once I got used to timings with KOF, going back to SF I was having a really hard time doing the simplest combos at first because my timing was totally off. It’s like you have to get into a totally different mindset. So for me, since KOF was the first game i started playing seriously, it was actually harder for me to pick up SF again later on.

You won’t regret getting into KOF. (unless you were unfortunate and KOF12 was your first game) You might prefer SF to KOF or vice versa, but either way, since a lot of us have been able to play it already (minus the console changes) we can undoubtedly say KOF XIII is a very worthwhile game, true to the series.

I think the biggest problem with people trying to transition to KOF is that it can seem daunting, you have more things in the strategy department. Alot of the inputs can be less forgiving than what you are used too (current gen= STIV, Blazblue v. GG) The game only takes practice. You didn’t pick up ST and magically you were doing everything, same with KOF. I love SNK (even the bad games) Just give it a chance get a team you like and practice you’ll be pulling off insane crap in no time and if you have an arcade even better if not Dreamcancle.com ? is where KOF lives they can help you out if you have any questions. Practice practice practice.

well i own kof xiii and mortal kombat, and i would say kof xiii is harder at the basics. Theres almost overwhelming amounts of information to gulp down, escpeically fora new comer to the series. And the combos are not forgiving although there are a couple tricks suck as button holding that make it slightly easier to pull of smaller combos. Theres no reason andys kuhaden break should be so hard, i meen i spent 6 hours just pulling off that move, half circle forward A, then left trigger. I know people are saying play hard for a few years but i dont want to invest that kind of time. Espeically limited to a niche game with sub par online. Half the time i cant find matches online when i play. Its a gorgeous game and alot of fun, its very thrilling to lose 2 matches and comeback and beat that ass. Mortal kombat in comparison was easier to pick up, all i needed to do was look at the moves list and learn the gauge. Granted not even close to high level mk but its a little more newb friendly game. Although if your an enthusiast i would pick up both, screw street fighter.

kof xiii is harder laban maybe not for you but how many kof games have you played. How many years of played time? Now for someone new to the series with no experience picks up mortal kombat or kof, mortal kombat would be easier to learn. Lol i cant believe your even arguing. I respect your experience but its skewed your judgement

How hard is KOF 2002 to learn? Lots of people playing it on GGPO.

Kof 02 is considered harder than kof 11 and 13. And kof is actually harder than sf. The links are much tighter and there is a lot more to learn in kof. Kof 13 is only considered easy when compared next to the older/other snk fighters. And mk9 is very fun and so is injustice. Everyone should play them.

Hi, putting that thread up :disagree:
i just bought Kof 13 on steam, because well, it was less expensive than usual, 7euros to try (which is expensive knowing i’ll be so bad at it ^^)

So i’m an ok player with USF4, have been playing it since vanilla

so i tried KOF 13 pratice.
drive cancel and max cancel are way too hard for a noob, when it’s supposed to be “common basics”
timings are really to tight

i’ll keep on trying, but i don’t have as much time as i was a student, nor a good wrist and finger health (i already got a tendinitus because of MvC3 lol)

Thus my 1st point of view is, unless you have time and dedication, (and no tendinitus problems^^) Kof 13 is not for you. Too much old school. I really enjoyed the way you can focus on tactics in SF4, and not so much on execution, which is for purist, which is nice, but no thank you for me, i’m too old for this shit
VF5 , Soul 4, 5, all tekkens, are easier than this (i tried VF4, VF5, SF4, Soul 1,2,4, Tekken 3, 4, 5, MvC3 => this last one is easy too get into, but if you want to do pro combo, i’m not good enough to find the timing :stuck_out_tongue: )

KOF really not from easiest fighters but when start learn do all normal way first basic special moves and next pick your favourites and learn basic combos step by step that is best way learn game, dont go in begin on hard stuff basic combos is enough to rule in non pro environment

I’m trying to learn KOF '98, just to become good enough to play at FightCade without everybody going off like “fucking noob mash harder gtfo” or whatever. I’d train there if the environment was more intelligent, but for now I just have to beat motionless player 2 for figuring out combos/best normals and play the arcade mode in order to learn how to defend against the various characters.

I picked Heidern (because of the character design, cool moves and the fact that he has charge motion specials), Ralf (because of the charge motion specials + I wanted to have a good command grab) and King (because of the character design). I play “Advanced” mode.

So, I started training with the Asian version, but FightCade uses the US version, and I noticed that the “emoticons” that characters get based on their team are almost completely turned around in the Asian and US versions (no idea why). So, because of this, I had to drop King, and I’m now trying to pick a character that would fit the team without making everyone “angry” in the US version, but still beginner friendly in execution. Any suggestions?

First of all, don’t care about what others think of you: whether you’re great or trash at the game, you’re going to get flamed by somebody. Its whatever.

I don’t know how you like to build your teams, and its been years since I’ve played KoF “seriously” but when putting my team together, I’d always have some kind of diversity. So I have a really good grappler, zoner and all-rounder, as an example.

In all my years of playing, I’ve never cared too much about the smiley faces… Just worked around it, it was a dumb mechanic anyway.

That being said, perhaps Leona would suit your team pretty well. Low execution, charge (you seem to like that), stupidly good low.b and V-Slasher is good  I pretty sure she should be “smiley” with Heid and Ralf.

If you want a zoner… Kensou or Athena are about as annoying as it gets… Athena has her airthrow, a cmd grab, can cancel sweep into psy.ball… wtfffff :-0

I’d suggest Real Bout Terry as a “long term” investment. Slide into Rising Tackle may take some time to get down but seriously… C, F+A, Slide, Rising tackle… is probably the most damaging BnB in the game that doesn’t require any meter… and you could easily create a derivative of this combo with cr.b, cr.a, rising knuckle (or df.c) into whatever…

TL:DR Real Bout Terry or Leona or anybody really because there are no truly ass characters in KoF.
