Probably my favorite thing about this game is that rush supers still have 90% of the animation come out if they’re blocked. 15 hits of chip damage FTW.
That’s not a good thing…all you have to do is block, then guard roll (waste one stock), then combo the guy from behind as he keeps punching/kicking the air.
Alternate guard…after blocking an attack, keep alternating high and low block rapidly. You will be immune to all throws until you stop alternating.
I use Robert a lot in 98…mixup sweeps with f+A overheads…cancel into the f+A from a sweep a lot. It’s fun to whiff the sweep on the opponent’s wakeup and cancel to the overhead too.
Some other things…I generally run up to my opponent with a crouch C, because it is great as an anti-air. If they jump, it’s going to hit and if blocked/got hit, then just cancel it to f+A. Also, his low B’s into hcb+K is good.
Robert’s far C is also a very good poke.
Some combos…
Close/Crouch C, f+B, qcf hcb+A or qcf+A
Close/Crouch C, f+A, qcb+K(corner only)
hcf+K, f+B, dp+C
crouch Bx2, hcb+D
Billy’s one of my mains in 98- though he isn’t good- I think he’s one of the worst characters in the game to be honest.
Some stuff.
-
You have to know how to use every normals. Literally, every normal. Including the differences between jumping straight and jumping forwards normals. Billy takes more damage then the rest of the cast, so you have to be careful about taking damage. Even his stick tosses- the A version and the C version have different timing, and should be mixed in (though finisher should only be used on a hit confirm) to make the other person pay to get in.
-
A good pressure technique on a knockdown, crossup jump D, close C, shock jolt (tap C). Safe if blocked, and very hard to CD counter or AB recovery roll to punish. If you can hit confirm, use DP+K into corner into DP+P or DM (if you can do that), if not in corner do HCF+P or fwd+A.
-
The counters are important. Billy’s low counter can hit things Mary’s mid counter cannot hit, like the straight slice, slides, etc… That surprises some people. It also does fairly good damage if you get a clean hit.
-
Know the character matchups- some chars have problems with certain normals. If so, whore them. Chris tends to have some trouble with Billy’s jump B and straight jump C, so I use those a lot.
Oh snap, why didn’t I realize that? I normally stick to 2k2 or XI, but me and a few friends decided to mess around with 98. In one match he did Kim’s Phoenix super, and I blocked the first hit and tried to counter, but didn’t know that the supers continue and got raped.
Yeah, I suck.
Yeah just do close D into that super, then 9~B for an instant overhead or cr.B. Or you can try short hop in C~land~B, which is sort of annoying to block cause the blockstun on her j.C is super short. And then when it hits I just mash D. There’s probably some less scrubby thing you can do but idk what it is.
Does anyone have any technical info on how to aviod/kill CD counters from various clone super setups? I vaguely remember seeing people get mangled by that thing when they try to CD counter out of it.
You can also combo into sealing super with just cr.B, cr.A xx super.
Her slide is awesome from cr.C, and after the slide connects, cr.C beats out a lot of shit. Well, cr.C beats a lot of shit all the time.
A couple Robert things no one mentioned… His j.D is really good, the tip of his foot hits a lot of shit. Off the hcf+K, you can do hyperhop D, then run and it’ll let you barely run under them for a cross-under.
Can someone give the link to that video that was in the KOF '98-Ralf help thread? That guy was awesome, and I’m thinking of giving Ralf a try after watching that.

oogosho is the best ralf player in the world
but i don’t really like his style since i hate kof98’s ground blow game
ralf is all about far C crouch C and straight jump A
with only this shit more than half of the cast can’t get close to him
oogosho also use him in every kof he play
generally he pick ralf clark + the god tier of the game
98: urayashiro - ralf - daimon
urayashiro only because he have tons of advatages in matchups than clark
2002: ralf clark billy
XI: ralf clark gato
oh, as side note for my complaining i really dislike that in kof almost each top tier is a 2-3 cheap tactics whore
while generally lower tiers are more interesting
Is Chang really good in this one? I feel very comfortable when I play as him but I don’t know how well he does overall wise, and bad matchups.
Chang is stupid good ala Ralf, with his normals doing obscene damage and lots of air dominance. Bad ground game, though. Loses to people with decent pokes or players that keep him grounded.

Chang is good in '98. Obscenely good normals (far C, jump C+D, etc.) and some specials. Of course, folks like shotos will give him problems.
So is this considered the kof 98 thread? If not can I make one?
Well, uh, we’re talking '98 here, aren’t we?
Just post shit here.
anyone know any king combos???
She doesn’t have many combos…
- in the corner, close B, dp+A, hcb+D
- Close D(1 hit), qcbx2+K
- Close D, hcb+C
Actually in the corner, use close D,dp+A, hcb+B
One bizarre trick. If you trade hits with the Silent Flash, you can combo into close D, another silent flash.
King mostly does rely on poking instead of combos though.
Man I never knew how vicious Brian Battler or Heavy D was until I played a very good ass player today. Especially heavy D.
It’s hard for Brian to be vicious…that air spin move is actually not that good once you know how to stop it…to me he seems like a one trick pony.
Has anyone mentioned All Happy teams yet? I was messing around today and chose Ralf, Mature and Kyo and I found out that they all had yellow smiley faces. I started with Ralf, did what I could until I died. Used Mature as a crazy battery but also used her DM every now and then and when it was time for Kyo to come out, it was rape rape rape. Any other all smiley face teams?
