King of Fighters 98' thread

Guys, any good Mai strats/combos?(97 version/RB)

resurrecting this thread…

I’m starting to play this game, and I need some help for it. Any general tips? Also I’m using Goro (seeing that he is a very strong grappler, and I like that) and Iori (damn he rocks in every game, and he has some really strong b&b using his rekkakens), but I still haven’t decided on my third char. Any advice on the third char? (I’ve read that Chris and O.Yashiro are very good, and I dont care about being called a top tier whore, in fact I’d like it :D). Also what order should I use? (I know about the smileys on the order selection screen when you press Start, but should it be used as a guide for the order?). In cvs2 I know that the usual order is battery/meter user/anchor, but I don’t know if I should be searching for something similar in this game.

Another big problem I’m having is that I don’t really know how this game is played overall (also gameplans with specific chars, I only know that I should be rushing down like crazy with Iori), because I haven’t played any KOF seriously ever, and haven’t seen too much video footage (I’m downloading some matches from orochinagi right now). Any info on how the game flows and how I should play it?

With Goro I know a bit about the qcb+b (I’ve read something in this thread, but there isn’t too much about it), which seems to let you hit with a dp+A after a knockdown in a strange way. Any more info on it? About Iori, what should I be using to get into my opponent? About combos, I’ve been using j.b+B (land) C, f+A and rekkakens or super, and after a command grab, C, super.

Thanks in advance.

Order? Happy characters first then neutral or angry ones second or last. Meter users should be second or last.

There’s huge KOF threads here:

If you’ve the time and patience there’s some '98 stuff there. Yes, it is fast-paced, but sometimes flat-out rushdown isn’t too desirable either. I’ll try and get to the Chris/O.Yash/general stuff when I’ve the time. ^_^;

where can i download KOF’98 match vids?

Thanks for the replies.

I’ve reading those 2 threads and I’m trying to collect the tidbits of info on kof98.

Looks like my team will be finally Goro/Iori/Chris (unless you advise me something different). BTW I’ve been finally able to get to the final boss after 3 days playing the game :smiley:

Try www.orochinagi.com (they’re hosted on fileplanet).

Rugal is easy btw. Just use Extra mode Kyokugens (Ryo, Robert, Takuma, etc.) or Saisyu, super a lot when in red life, and you’re set. ;p

Or you roll like an idiot through him, of course not when he charges his fireball. After this you often face his back and can combo him or just throw him. IMHO was Rugal in KOF 95 stronger, but maybe it is just me.^^

@terryforever
Also check out http://safi-kof-team.skyblog.com for tourny vids (check older updates). Sometimes you find some good ones there. There is also other KOF related stuff like combovids etc. However, I’m more a match vid friend so …

^Tis all about baiting out Genocide Cutter… or nailing him with a Chang counterhit. :smiley:

In the Kyokugen list in my previous post, I meant Yuri rather than Takuma too. Oops. >_<

Yeah I believe any character with a fireball and a command grab can make their fireball unblockable if you execute the command grab just as the fireball hits the opponent (the command grab will display it’s whiffed animation)
So that’s: Iori (Scum Gale), Athena, Takuma (his running grab), Heidern too maybe??

Is there a list of the gameplay differences of the EX/hidden versions of the characters? I’ve forgotten most of them

Anyway we just got KOF98 back in our Casino arcade in London, and it’s got a very warm response.

Check here for vids: http://neoempire.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=378

You may or may not be too impressed. But hopefully the matches will improve in the next few weeks or so.

All I know is Terry, and he’s got his old hcf+K move and charge upkicks instead of dragon punch upkicks. This leaves him with a sick combo of: cl.C(2), f+A(2) hcf+K [d]u+D

You can also combo the hcf+K into Rising Tackle after the c.B, c.A,d/f+C if I remember correctly … He was just to damn good as battery with damage output.:looney:

@The Chef
Well this ElCarpeto wasn’t so hot with Ryo (jumped straight into my eyes cause I played him hc for years)… Were was the far s.B madness (beats out stuff, which it shoudn’t), the blockstrings and s.CD into qcf+A use for more pressure. Also for Chris …, remember your j.CD …, for real abuse this move!^^ Also stop random supers like with your Shingo, either combo them or just use your meter for counter CD attacks (IMHO 80% of the time the better solution). Anyway, cool to see some european match vids of 98 and not only chinese and such.

I liked this game out of all the KOFs. My favorite team to use is King, Kim, and Ryo. Kim I practically know how to use move for move. I love using his special a lot. He is my favorite in the game because of his speed. He also tends to be used perfectly in the series. Love the storylines surrounding him from the first KOF to the last. He has slowly evolved into one of the best in the entire game.

This is ,along with kof2k2 , the most balanced king of fighters title .
Almost half of the character cast get their chance in match play .That’s why these kof are the most popular one and the most known (don’t even compare it to maximum imbalanced game which are all the other kof ).

So…can Ryo go from his DP into his super combo move after Jumping in HK + his HCB Punch(in close for this, it’s similar to Andy’s) move in 99 DM AND 98 or just the former? I tried to land this sooo many times.

And is there a good finish out there after the HCB Punch move?

Sorry for reviving a dead thread, but I wanted to know real quick is if I hold a KoF 98’ tourney, should non-Omega Rugal be allowed to be played?

Regular Rugal is considered by some to be bottom tier, so there is no issues with him.

Omega Rugal is always banned the same way ST Akuma is

Yeah, no probs with Regular Rugal. As a general rule, the boss characters from pre-XI KOF’s are banned I think.

Come XI, I think most all of the hiddens are “weak” enough to be allowed.
