King of Fighter 12 is really that good!

The game is alot of fun. You can jump right in and play for hours on end. I went back to Chinatown Fair to play it against some regulars and had just as much fun now that I have a better understanding of the game. This game would have been the perfect Xbox Live / Playstation Network download. Absolutely perfect.

As it is now, I would NOT suggest buying it to anyone who walked into SRK the moment SF4 dropped onto consoles. There’s not enough to keep new people in before they wander back to SF4 or BB, and to be perfectly blunt, this game isn’t worth $60. It’s just not. Sure, I’m ecstatic that it plays pretty damn nice right off the bat, but that’s I’m part of such a small group that accepts (read: tolerates) such a thing at this point. I can’t just tell someone standing on the outside that, it doesn’t work that way.

I mean to go even further, the game animates really well. Some characters look amazing in motion, but it does not compare to the likes of SF4 or BB aesthetically. Yes I’m serious. I play this game on a monitor that outputs at 720, in which SF4 and BB look fantastic in. I pop in this game? Pixels fucking everywhere, and the filters make it look much worse. I bring my PS3 to a friend’s house and plug it into his CRT and it actually looks better??? I’m sorry, that’s completely ass backwards. It’s one thing to praise the work that went into creating these sprites, but it’s another thing entirely to deny that said sprites are UPSCALED and not high definition in any form. You can pout all you want about how long it took, but the bigger and better your tv is, the worse this game looks. Some of the flaws really show when you’ve got a 52" television to play it on. Pretty bad.

And my biggest gripe is that this game is completely and utterly void of any personality or charm. No character intros. No story mode. Barely passable gallery mode illustrations. There was alot more to KoF then recyling their sprites for 10+ years, and this game is devoid of it. Kensou looks cool, but he’s like every other karate nut now. I know it might sound like I’m pulling at straws here, but I really liked that aspect of previous KoF’s, and I don’t see that continuing here in much any form, and I think that’s a crying shame.

Ah well, back to perfecting team runaway~

98 >>>>>>>>>> all

I like the gameplay a lot and hope that it is played in tourneys-especially evo. I just think that the overall fluff of extra sruff can turn off people. At the end of the day though…The gameplay is excellent and is still a joy to play. Now if SNKP could only properly fix that netcode.

I agree with the bit about the pixelation, when I played SF4 on a big screen it did look nice yet with KOF it was hard not to see the flaws especially upscaled. Now granted, SF4 does have terrible character models and silly animation but it does look "clean"at the very least when upscaled.

Ah, you’re one of THOSE guys.

While the game is great, the simple things that aren’t there really prevent it from being that “KOF” game we all came to expect it to be… I bought it for $60 and while I’m not gonna get rid of it, it’s obvious that it’s not worth the full price… the gameplay is superb but that’s all… it completely lacks everything else I would expect to be in a new KOF game… after playing 94-XI, 98UM, 2002UM, XII just leaves a nasty mark… sadly this game will probably be shunned in the KOF community moreso than both KOF 2K1 and 2K3 combined…

  • SFIV was slightly dissapointing gameplay wise compared to 3S but was great on it’s own, especially with returning fan favorites etc etc imo
  • Blazblue while not as good as Guilty Gear still manages to be fun (with 12 characters lol) along with it’s awesome netcode, this game is great and I don’t even like ArcSys games that much imo
  • KOF XII was a growing dissapointment from the start, there are really WAY too many key factors to list… it’s crazy

I dont get how people say that characters move sets are not good enough. The average character in this game has just as many specials as the average character in any other 2d fighter.

The constant whining about how peoples favorite characters were changed is just tiresome. Its a new game, and some characters are not going to play how you want them to. I loved iori in cvs2 and kof98, but the new iori is cool too, hes at least as good as the old iori if not better when you learn how to go aggro with him. New games sometimes equal new movesets, do you really want a game full of old characters you already know?

The game itself is amazing, I’ve never been a huge kof fan but this game really hooked me in quick. Theres just a lot to love about this game and as soon as the online is patched up this game deserves to find a big following.

I disagree, the game is worth $60. Its a fighting game, that design for human vs human interaction. SF4 might have all those bells and whistles but after getting my colors and taunts. The only features that are used in SF4 is Vs, Practice and Online. I never heard of anyone buying a fighting game cause they prefer CPU vs fighting.

Your opinion on the graphics is exactly that, a opinion. Not everyone is going to look at it and think the same way. Personally I think KOF12 looks better than SF4. SF4 looks devoid of any charm it used to have in 3D. Well thats my opinion.

The game does lack character intros just like its KOF94 counterpart. They are relaunching this series and its too bad it doesnt have these features. This game happens to be a dreammatch so no story mode this year. I dont think its a big deal, it is a fighting game. This isnt final Fantasy.

The game is cool for kof veterans
Game play is very well done…thats about it.

But snk has to do alot more to compete with capcom’s sf4.

I really love the deadlock mechanic too, it’s saved my ass more than a few, stuffing a special. While some characters like Terry don’t have power dunk, and Iori projectile less I think the gameplay more than makes up for it. The CC is great, when done effectively it’s a huge reward, but if you get caught it’s a incredible risk, it could be goodnight real quick. I love SF 4, but XII is so much more fun, two entirely different games but I’m having major fun with XII.

The pixel aesthetic was just that, an intentional move on SNK’s part to put pixel art into the game. I like Shane’s quote, you have to “celebrate” the sprites. I don’t feel the game was intended to be “hi-res” in the way you guys are thinking.

Of those complaining about the graphics, do you guys really not appreciate pixel art? SNK could’ve went the BB route and “drew” with paint brushes in photoshop, but they made a deliberate and concerted effort to put the characters together pixel by pixel and I can’t help but feel people have missed the point.

It sets them apart from the crowd, and gives the game it’s own unique visual feel.

xybur, speaking only for myself, I appreciate and love the pixel art in KOF12. What I don’t care so much for is the massively upscaled/zoomed versions of the same pixel art. It’s a shame that each match starts out with sprites zoomed and blocky.

Regardless of our feelings, if SNKP wants to hit a larger audience with the game and perform better in mass-market game reviews, I believe they need to try harder to appease the “casual” gamer that will be immediately offput by the “old school” look. MvC2 defaults to a good Crisp hqnx-like filter and I think it would have been wise for SNKP to do the same. That way, the everyday gamer still gets a “HD looking” game and the fans of the unfiltered look get the option for their preference.

Just my 2 cents…I love the game and would buy a second copy at full price if they just add GGPO and nothing else.

(Posting using cell phone)

This game is stupid easy to get into. The game isn’t shallow or anything but you basically jump right into the game with no issues. Mad characters are watered down, I guess that’s a good and bad thing. The game has less bullshit and more emphasis on pure kof.

Game is so easy though I jumped right in, on and offline(against competent fighting gamers) and won 98 percent of my matches. The level of comp is sooooooo looooooow. No one knows how to play kof, even though dandy j’s tut is in your face.

Good diversion till t6br. Game is very fun though and looks good.

i agree with this part, its obvious that the graphics direction is intentional

but you are wrong here

BB is pixel art too, done in almost the same way as snk did for kof12, the diference is the technique used to do the shadows (and the obvious style of the chars)

I thought Blazblue uses lines and kofxii goes dot by dot?

Yeah, most of the people I’ve played on XBL so far haven’t been very good either, with a small handful of exceptions. So the game is mad easy to get into right now.

A lot of this topic echoes my thoughts on this game precisely. What sucks is that so many of my friends that I play fighters with seem to have just dismissed this game entirely and don’t seem to think that there is anything redeeming about it to the point where they actually refuse to play it. I was really hoping to have some local competition once in a while with this, but as it stands now, it seems everyone else wants to do SF4 or BB exclusively:sad: which of course, leaves me with the ever-so-fantastic netcode, which I really hope SNKP fixes.

Welcome to 2009 buddy, try to clear out that ear wax you got building up because you’ll need to hear a whole lot more then ‘cpu vs fighting’.

It’s nice that you COMPLETELY ignored / overlooked / dismissed the point I made where someone like myself and the ‘regulars’ of SRK can accept this game because it plays as well as it does, but we barely represent 2% of the market.

That’s why I can’t suggest it to anyone else. I could go on and on about how well it plays to folks outside of SRK but things just don’t work that way. You have to have bells and whistles, you have to have tutorials, you have to lend a helping hand, because in the end that benefits SNKP and US.

As it stands now the game ends up as a fantastic thank you to the people who have stuck around for so long, but does little to entice people who just wandered in, let alone keep them satisfied.

Um no, it’s not my opinion. Read what I wrote again before you get your panties in a bunch. If you have this game running on an HDTV and an CRT tv right next to it the game will literally look better on the CRT then it does on the HDTV. That’s actual fact. The way they went about in upscaling the sprites / putting them into the game lends itself to this result.

Oh, another smarmy, convenient remark~

What the HELL does FF have to do with all of this? Are you saying 10+ years of story is a bad thing? How do you bring up the FIRST KoF as a counter part, noone knew who the characters were then, but now at its ‘re-birth’, with the perfect opportunity to actually (re) introduce these characters the casual market STILL won’t know who these characters are, and that goes along way. I say shame on SNK for not taking the opportunity.

Step the fuck out of your fanboy bubble for a minute before you start replying to other people. I bought the game the day it came out, I’m playing it, loving it, but I’m not blind to ignore the flaws this game has.

lmao no its not

I’m actually having fun with it now

but you cant honestly believe this is worth 60

you…you have to be delusional

this is 20 at best as it stands

like master chibi said this would’ve been better suited as a xbla/psn download

20 was for the game. 40 was a donation to SNK.

good game though. best of the 2009 fighters, so far.
