OH I’d like to add against people who like to throw a barrage of fireballs or at least 2 in a row right outside of uriens sweep range, u can throw out an immediate heavy headbutt after u block the first Hadoken and it will hit them right before they can even throw the 2nd fireball, so it’ll act as a counter hit. Same goes for ex shoulder incase u have v-trigger.
Although if they start to notice, they may try throwing out a fierce or any button to try and knock u out of the headbutt for a possible CC. This is when u can actually mix it up and not do a headbutt and just whiff punish them.
Another thing I realized this can be very powerful when u have v-skill armor and want to use heavy shoulder when u have super. It will work mid-long screen too.
I have yet to test this out on guile in training mode because I havnt unlocked him, but so far I have just found it out during my matches against a ryu, tested it out in training mode to confirm it works as well.
TIL you can cancel Knee drops. Didn’t know that thank you FYagami.
Real talk for a second though: Does anyone find one of the main problems with Uriens gameplay design to be his need of EX? The same goes for Alex too, these feel like characters that have all these really good moves limited by the number of EX. Maybe it’s them transferring from the 3S engine to SFV? Aside from that Uriens damage is kinda off. Aegis as a super in 3S was far more beneficial because of scaling. But here it fucks your combo up completely unless your going for resets. The amount of scaling after 1 aegis is insane man.
The Knee Drop cancels is a glitch. TA is exploring it atm on his live stream now. Seems like it glitches out on plinked fireballs. Why plinked only? No clue.
Since he builds meter really quick, not really. I wish all cast had all useful EX moves.
I don’t mind saving the 2nd Aegis for a reset. Harsh scaling is part of the game for everyone, Urien has really tricky resets out there, it may as well be as n unblockable.
The problem with most of this “Urien aegis tech” is that most of it is very unlikely to happen much at either high level or against players of the same caliber as you are. Why?
95% of all this is Cr.hp>into v trigger (1) stuff. And since Urien usually has only 1/4 of his life to work with plus needing to land a raw Cr.hp, which lets face it, only really works in a few situations:
Off a CC at neutral, which requires a lot of fishing and trying to get lucky
Off a v trigger itself, which makes these mixups impossible since they rely on raw Cr.hp>bla bla>aegis.
Off a raw jumpin… Not likely to happen much… Though it does happen of course.
Blocking a reversal and then getting a CC punish against it.
None of these things are things that are solid and you can really rely on or base a game around. So most of the tech that comes from these, while looking great on paper from the crazy mixups, just isn’t going to be something Urien will be able to rely on day in day out. The tech is certainly powerful when you can get it off… Getting it off is the unreliable part.
So what can we do about this?
Realize that the best overall setups will probably be first aegis used as a wiff confirm/empty cancel, second aegis used as a reset opportunity.
Try and maximize our v skill usage/find ways to get out our v skill. At this point in time, without aegis, Uriens wakeup game doesn’t seem to have much bite, perhaps it is more wise to try and find v skill opportunities.
Uriens high/low target combo mixup is much more powerful (and safe) when he has v trigger pop. Using it for the pop and for v trigger mixups is probably a great way to base the move. The overhead from the target combo is 4 frames faster than the raw overhead and is safer behind v trigger. Right now it seems to easy to block and throw tech for the opponent while the v trigger is active, plus, hitting with a low or overhead on the v triggers last bounce gives little to no confirmation time. V trigger is also a big “I’m going to do a low/throw mixup” sign. So something else really needs to be found for when first v trigger is blocked.
So far the best v trigger gambits seem to be max range Cr.mk or st.mk xx v trigger for the first aegis, and ex tackle xx aegis for the second aegis. Perhaps ex fireball xx aegis is even better though, but that requires Urien to already be close.
So what needs to happen is we really need to come up with mixups that use the first aegis as a confirm such as:
St.mk xx v trigger>Cr.mpx2>Cr.hp into our next setup, that is what will win us games via simply being easier to hit.
I mean we COULD sit there and hold onto our aegis and wait for a Cr.hp confirm for the last bit of our life, but I don’t think that that is a great strategy unless Urien gets v trigger at around half life, where it is still kinda dubious. I mean we are talking about jumping through very small hoops… For a mixup…
I think I’ve found a good setup off the first aegis:
St.mk xx aegis (use the pop to confirm the hit) Cr.hp (opponent bounces off of aegis) fmp xx headbutt
Urien at this stage is probably a character that needs a really solid plan on how to use him. Just playing him probably won’t maximize his benefits like other characters.
A good general plan seems to be to try to get as many CC and v trigger off as possible with him before he reaches half life. Once at half life his v trigger is right around the corner no matter what so it doesn’t make sense to get it then. The attack that gets the most v juice is ex tackle as it makes v juice 3 times. It makes a little over a quarter of a bar on block.
The combo st.hp CC dash Cr.hp xx h fireball>ex tackle makes almost one v meter if the ex tackle was v skilled.
Bhk and st.hp CC both make half a v meter.
If we do bhk CC>vskill and then get an ex tackle blocked we’ve already gotten a little over 3/4 of 1 v meter and will have our v trigger at around half life.
So BHK into v skill is one of the better ways to make v juice and really sets Urien up for a win.
It won’t be safe to v skill here in all matchups against all meter options, but it’s something to perhaps take gambles on as an early v trigger can be a very powerful thing in Uriens hands.
I like to open the round with vskill from time to time. I feel like most people are looking for the divekick/fireball read at the start of the round as most uriens will open with that
