Kick your sneakers off and relax~ Guy General Discussion Thread

Reaction U1 works too but was just hoping Guy had a way around Rogs free chip.

I wouldn’t call it “free chip” cos he has to charge for it. Not mentioning his straights are focusable.

Even if his straights were punishable by U2, it’s not Balrog’s offence that Guy has problems with, but his defense.

The Balrog matchup should be treated similarly to the Zangief match up. Balrog wins the neutral game though. It’s tough to whiff punish his normals.
You want to avoid losing life for free. Stay outside of LP Dash Straight range so you can make it whiff and punish. Always OS on Run~Slide knockdowns
when Balrog is meterless. The only time you should be in range 0 is when you are applying pressure and return to mid range when you are done.
Don’t stay in range 0 doing nothing. Keep the match mid screen. Let him hang himself with Turn Punch/Jump ins/EX Dash punches.
You should be ready react outside of mid range. cr.MK beats all EX Dashes.

Ultra 2 will make Balrog kill himself once you have a decent lead.

This is a matchup chart I’ve just thrown together for Guy based on my own experience and watching other high level Guy matches. It’s just for a bit of fun, nothing too serious. Matchups strongly in Guy’s favour towards the top, not in his favour towards the bottom, 5-5’s are in the middle. Not in any horizontal order at all.

This assumes that both players have a good understanding of each others’ matchup. I actually think I’m good at handling most Giefs and Hondas now, but they are definitely the hardest work.

How is Abel so high up there? I’ve seen some people call this match up in Guy’s favor and I can’t understand it.

I think that a tier list you made from your guy match ups experience is really good(the best) but how is blanka in guy’s favor(any tips for footsies) and how is oni not in guy’s favor(that character takes alot of risk u2 kills his pressure with Demon Slash).

I personally don’t like that list, here is my list that I gave EMP Hiro, this is from my own experiences and watching matches with some insight from iRedman.

Now to reply to your list Nebbiez. Abel is 5/5, Guy has the better neutral game, Abel has better options from a knockdown than Guy does due to his mixup. Abel’s Wakeup options all lose to throws. Guy has EX tatsu that can be baited and heavily punish without the option of FADC. It’s basically a who gets the knockdown first and who can guess right/escape pressure better.

Blanka- Can’t use any balls at all, on block you can punish, on hit most can still be hit with EX hozanto if in range. Ninja Sickle actually blows up his wakeup options out of EX Upball. Rainbow Ball will get hit if timed correctly, you’ll avoid his Ultra 1 if time correctly (you can TK izuna the up portion) He can’t get free chip with Ultra 2 as you can do a back jump, back jump~immediate wall jump j.Hk to get a free punish on it. Outside of playing footsies its really down to who has the better ground game and stopping/avoiding Blanka’s gimmicks.

I don’t agree with Gief being that low at least below Honda. When you play a solid Honda… that shit is a train wreck (I’ve played MIN several times) Viper should never be that low etiher, that is honestly in Guy’s favour for 3 reasons. Cr.MK blows up her wakeup, you can OS it from a safe jump which beats all of her options or avoids it. She can’t even TK fient. Guy has the stronger ground game. Outside of her burn kick pressure she really has limited options if they aren’t done ambiguous and meaty. If she delays it by a fair margin you can TK izuna the burn kick for free on your wake up, or even cr.mk Viper literally has to go nuts to win that matchup to try and catch the Guy player off guard. If you can block or react well enough, Viper is in a tough spot.

All I have to say for now, any questions? :coffee: I’m bored at work here.

I’d swap Abel with Gen and Makoto with Rose.

You don’t really want to play footsies with Blanka too much because his knuckle slide is a perfect whiff punisher. Just tank against him. If he knows that all of his balls are punishable on block, he’s gonna have to start stupid jump ins and random hops to get in on you. Sit there and wait for him to do this, and deal with his unsafe shenanigans accordingly. Blanka’s only ever dangerous once he gets knockdown into “what the hell side is he gonna hop to?” mixup. Just stay safe and don’t ever let him knock you down. Avoid being hit by knuckle slides at all costs.

Oni…this is a tough one. The problem with him is that there doesn’t really seem to be any ‘standard’ way of playing Oni. I regularly play against omh (OverMostHeads) who I personally consider to be the strongest Oni in the world. The problem I think Guy has is that Oni’s footsies are among the best, if not THE best in the game. Trying to get anywhere during the neutral game is an uphill struggle all the way. Sure, everyone has played gimmicky Onis who like to go for too many crossup slashes etc. But if you play a lame, footsie oriented Oni who knows exactly how to time and space his fireballs and ground normals correctly, it can just feel like every time to go for a poke you eat a counter hit. Plus he has a really solid, annoying fireball that you can’t hozanto underneath so you have to burn your bars on EX run slide to offensively get through (or a predicted jump in attack). His crouch HP is also one of the most solid anti-airs in the game and his EX DP literally beats clean everything in the game. I think most players haven’t had enough Oni exposure (myself included!) and he is among the strongest non-vortex characters in the game.

K thats for the blanka info I needed it I can’t think of how to start a offense on blanka outside of a safe jumps but if lame is the key I will work on it. oni has giving me problems before but I just stay in a range that St.mp will hit oni after I block far st.hp I save meter for ex run on him to get that a free hard knockdowns also try my best to remember that I can FA the his non ex Demon Palms and ultra2 his Demon Slash.

Rose is not a good matchup for Guy…

I’ve been trying to find ways of getting LK tatsu to hit three times in corner (in order to juggle Super afterwards)

So far I’ve found:
close HP xx LK tatsu
close HK -> far MP or far LP xx LK tatsu
cr MP -> cr LP xx LK tatsu
LP -> TC xx LK tatsu
cr LP x2 -> far MP xx LK tatsu

How else would you use the Super? Also I think it sucks that you can’t link Ultra 1 after the 3 hit LK tatsus…

I normally use it. after hozanto (y),

Okay, so I finally got the PC version of AE, but still won’t be playing online anytime soon as my internet’s bad, and I don’t have a stick. However, I have been trying these two setups:

  1. forward throw into corner -> forward dash x3 -> jump forward HK
  2. back throw into corner -> forward dash x2 -> jump forward HK

At first I was trying to find ways to make the jump HK cross up, but when I turned on auto-guard they seem to block it in same direction (is this what they call an “unblockable?”). I want to share this with you guys because I’m unsure about the nature of this attack.

Here’s a list of the characters:

Neither setup works:
Adon, Honda

Only setup 1 works:
Fuerte

Only setup 2 works:
Akuma, Claw, Cody, Dan, Dee Jay, Dhalsim, Dictator, Evil Ryu, Gen, Ibuki, Ken, Rose, Ryu, Sakura, Yang, Yun

Both setups work:
Abel, Blanka, Boxer, Cammy*, Chun Li, Dudley, Fei Long, Gouken, Guile, Guy, Hakan, Juri, Makoto, Oni, Sagat, Seth, Rufus, Viper, Zangief**

*Guy will usually end up on the other side after the HK hits, but for Cammy, he will sometimes end up on the front as well
**if you’re right next to Zangief after forward throw, an immediate dash will make Guy go through him, but slightly delaying this dash will still make Setup 1 work

This is not a true setup, nor is it an unblockable. Forward jump HK has got a very strange hit box where one of 3 things can happen depending on timing and spacing:

  1. Hits in front, Guy lands in front (this is the ‘normal’)
  2. Hits in front, Guy lands behind (this is what is sometimes working for you above)
  3. Hits behind, Guy lands behind (this is rare and normally only works as a counter hit depending on which move you are countering)

A better setup is: forward throw in the corner > neutral jump whiff air grab > forward jump HK

This is an unblockable on certain characters, but it’s not a TRUE unblockable (i.e. there are still ways of getting out of it or blocking it by either changing block direction on the frame it hits, or leaving the stick at neutral). I think you have to test true unblockables manually, because if you set the dummy to auto guard then it will automatically block even unblockable attacks.

I haven’t tested this in training mode because it would take a long time testing on the whole cast for not much benefit (as far as I’m concerned anyway), but if you feel like it you can just record Guy doing the setup above and then test blocking each way, no way at all, mashing different reversals, etc. to see which characters can block/escape.

Although I see Kiryu and Marq Teddy going for this setup, I tend to not because if they block the right way then you’ve just put yourself in the corner, even though I suppose you could just bushin flip back out again straight away. But for me it’s a momentum killer, once I get them in the corner I plan on safely keeping them there and pressuring them to force unsafe escape attempts. But hey, whatever works for you, works for you!

I’ve never been a fan of unblockables - even for Guy. Anyway at this point should we really be looking for them, considering Ultra SSF4?

Damn. Well anyway I will still give them a try ingame tomorrow and see how badly it gets blown up.

is there an actual list of unblockables for guy. sorry if i appear lazy but i did look and i cant find it. thanks in advance.

Ok. Now I don’t even remember where to start to search…
Where is the video about hiding OS specials in blockstrings?
Also, there was a video out there about canceling pre jump frames into a special that I can’t remember where I watched it.
If someone remembers, please feel free to tell me or even better! a dropped link will be much more appreciated :stuck_out_tongue: (it sounds really lazy, I know, my free time is so little)

Ok I found the Os between blockstrings video… Thank you Kreymore for sharing such kind of stuff :stuck_out_tongue:
