Kick your sneakers off and relax~ Guy General Discussion Thread

Found some new crossup/reset tech with Guy well I hope it’s new lol
So in the corner after a focus attack or a stun you can do Ninja Sickle>st.MP xx Run Slide this will in fact cross your opponent up in the corner and it’s safe on block as well I tested it out on a few characters. And on a few other characters you can do Ninja Sickle>st.MP xx MP Honzanto and that will also cross up in the corner and HP Hozanto also cross up but it’s not safe so don’t do that one.

I have trouble against crouching turtlers. forward+mp seems too slow and gets reacted to quickly by any decent player and run > jump kick is obvious. What do?

Try not to give them any amount of a life lead. Characters with great defensive tools are a trainwreck for Guy to get in on. You’ll have to sit back and build meter. If you feel the need you can try to bait them to do something but most people will be smart and not do anything. Once they approach you play a footsie or anti-air game. And take advantage of any opportunity that will score you a KD or air reset, then go for pressure. If you want to back out and give yourself space then play the same game they are playing

Also I realized that even after a successful elbow drop I seem to lose advantage and immediately get countered, what am I doing wrong?

^ ‘Bait Hard and Punish Harder’, is my theme for Guy.

If you are hitting them at the top of their head then there’s your answer. On block you wont have any advantage on most characters you’ll be at 0 if they are standing. Other characters you’ll be in the negatives. On hit you’ll probably be at +4/5 and on tall characters its not even worth trying to go for a combo. It’s always best to try and score a hit when they are crouching or spaced to that it will hit them in their mid section.

I’ve been playing yang as my sub for few days now and he’s really fun(not as fun as guy though). The bad part is that now when playing guy sometimes I do mantis slash motion after lk without thinking lol. His damage output is ass though, especially without FADCs or maybe I’m just too used to guy’s high damage output :stuck_out_tongue:

Yang relies HEAVILY on resets, and those resets can be from anything, aerial resets, mixups, resets into command grab. Yang will actually teach you many fundamentals that can help Guy as they will generally be played the same way.

Just came back from casuals, I must say… baiting with Elbow to Ultra is so… damn LOVELY…I feel as if U2 is better for Guy though against DJ, it ruins his safe jumps, but U1 is better cause it can punish a few things against DJ. However… EFF Ibuki, her U1 is a nightmare and a half.

Well guys looks like i’m going to season’s beatings on may 5th since it’s in the same city I live in I can’t wait to go this will be the biggest tournament I have ever went to can’t wait to play all of the good players. until then I’m just going to be training online and offline in casuals

Dante we hope you do well. Some thing I use to use in Guy’s Forward Throw set-up. If you want to create more damage from the front you can use: Forward Throw; Forward Jump into a late Elbow Drop, Forward Jump with Hk or Mp to start your combo. When Crossing-up you can use: Forward Throw; Forward Jump, Forward Jump with Lk to create a Fake Cross-up. After you teach your opponent to block, use Low Bushin Flip after the first jump to time an ‘uncrouchable’. To some people Low Bushin Flip looks like a Forward Jump, as though your going for a cross-up or something. If you face a shoto use Jump-in Hk or Mp to beat their crMk. And remember to use Guy’s Back Throw ‘unblockable’ set-up as often as you can. Overall, push your opponent in the corner and land hard knock downs to keep the pressure on. Reserve your meter as much as you can for the Final Round. Try to go into every round with at least 2 meters to keep Pressure Characters like Bison off of you. Good Luck!

Playing in front of people is really a lot different from playing at your own place. Yesterday I went to the place with 4 linked arcade cabs and played quite a few games there, there was some people watching so I got really really nervous. I did win a lot but I can feel that I played MUCH worse than usual but maybe it’s just that i got nervous really easily. Playing in a big tourney must be on another level lol.

If you face Seth/Makoto/Abel or any character that can stuff you safe jump after slide with a throw, try mixing in an empty jump into ex bushin flip once in a while that shit can fuck people’s mind up lol

GL Dante go kick some ass with Businryu techniques!

Thank you Kain and xIROCx

Lost a Guy mirror match :(, I went to cross up, hoping if he did EX tatsu it would not auto correct…he buffered the move and did it and out came Autocorrect U1…

._. i feel as if I should give up cause this was the first and only time I’ve ever faced a Guy player in person at a tournament only to lose it. I literally had that match and game won. But… then disappointment. Sigh…

I personally don’t care for Guy mirror matches, but will play them. CrMk all day. But I feel bad for you Blooddrunk, that Ultra sounded random.

Well I had no health and was in the corner. I didn’t do EX tatsu for the obviously bait to just block and punish me. He didnt Backdash so U1 was not an option so I wall jumped to avoid anything and he was in range to be crossed up. If he had done EX tatsu and it didn’t auto correct that was an easy Lvl 3 Focus > HP Hozanto > U1

Oh.
New info, makes the mirror match a lot harder.

Run Slide FADC (backdash) is entirely unsafe against Guy if he has meter, or Ultra 1 Its a free punish. Though I think U1 may be dependent on range but EX hozanto will land no matter what. Run slide won’t.

Guy on Guy is one of my least favourite match ups… although I love making jokes about it.
But seriously, every time I end up facing another Guy it just turns into a random jump fest, and I can’t really do much. Hahaha. cr.mk all over the place.

I’ve literally learned to just stand at cr hk max range and Hold focus attack to see if they do anything when they don’t have meter. And just walk for approaching. Most get antsy and do something in the range of a Run command or take their chances, had I known about the FADC punish on Run/slide that match would have been won for me.

I stand by my statement. Guy’s worst match up is himself as literally nothing is safe against him, so now it’s literally either or for Ultras, as both have uses for punishment.

Guy vs Guy is probably my least favorite match-up, just because of crMk. High Level shoto’s are close. But my favorite match-up is probably against Honda just because their so many ways to stuff headbutt and sumo smash. Plus I enjoy the challenge, because this suppose to be a bad match-up for Guy. I just like the fact that a well timed Neck Flip, Bushin Flip or Hozanto can stuff Ex Head Butt. But that’s just me.
