Ken Q&A: Ask simple questions here?

Hey guys, I would like to ask for some tips regarding my Ken’s playstyle. I’m a Sak whore but I randomly switch it up when I don’t feel like using her, and Ken’s one of those that I would like to know more about. I don’t have any video capturing programs, so I’ll do my best to explain.

Basically I realized that I play Ken and Ryu virtually the same way in where I throw out lots of fireballs and abuse the hell out of c.MK xx fireball…and I even do AA lp SRK > EX fireball with Ken even though c.HP also does the job. The only difference is that I use c.HP/c.MK xx tatsu as my primary go-to and I generally like to mixup after a connected tatsu with throw/n. jump. I also like to use f.MK during wakeup from a distance and when I wanna approach. Other shenanigans of Ken that I heard of (cross-up air tatsu, kara throw etc.) I generally avoid since I don’t train much with Ken/have the proper knowledge to pull them off. If they would dramatically change my Ken for the better, however, I am willing to spend some time in training mode.

I guess my question is…am I using the correct moves/tactics or am I missing out on alot of what Ken has to offer? Am I playing him in, for lack of a better word, a wrong way? What gimmicks should I start learning to take my Ken a step forward?

Any advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

I’m not necessarily Dr. Chaos or High Lulu level, but from being with Ken for a little bit I can already tell by looking at this that you’ve got some of the wrong ideas, for instance using lp.SRK instead of mp.SRK for AA, or saying that Ken and Ryu play virtually the same way. True, they have some of the same moves, but they’re still twoo different characters. They have different bnbs and punishments, as well as their own strong and weak points. Though, in the end the play style really does come down to the person behind the stick I suppose.

Fireballs aren’t Kens strongest point. And like Exiledwolf said, use Mid punch shoryuken (the 2 hit one) as an antiair, well timed, it has more invincibility. Lp will often just trade. I never use another fireball after tbh [Didn’t even know it worked with Ken] Idk if it hits, but if it does hit, the Lp, I would go for a another Fierce shoryuken/ex while he is in the air (you kinda gotta calculate the distance)

Ken has longer recovery hadokens, so his aint that good, try to use them a little but not to much.

Kara throw might be a little tricky, but once mastered are one of Kens main strengths that set him apart. Although I use a controller and its a bit harder with them, so > : Also try to use Forward + Mk a lot. A very good poke that has long range

hello

hi im new to the forum and i want to learn more about Street fighter and Ken as my main. i have this question how can i beat ryu’s J.mp(the 2hit punch in the air) my cousin and i play street fighter 4 and his main is ryu every time i do a jump attack he counter it with a j.mp and ultra me.
hope u can help me guys

Don’t jump. And if you must, use j.FP before he hits his j.MP.

he always use it when i cross up he rarely use shoryukens when i cross up.

DaWhiteShadow is right. Just don’t jump. The only reason your cousin is hitting you with the j.mp is because he is expecting you to jump for the crossover. That means you’re being too predictable. I’m not saying to completely stop jumping or attempting crossovers, just mix it up by doing it sometimes but not as much. This way when your cousing expects you to jump and does j.mp you can punish him on his way back down. In turn, this will make your cousin more reluctant to use j.mp because of the risk of punishment.

It’s like when I play my brother. I don’t like staying too far so after he does cr.mk > hadoken I step-kick to get back closer. It became too predictable and he kept shoryukening me out of it. I stopped step-kicking so much and starting throwing out hadokens with the step-kick to keep him on his toes. Now I use step-kick, hadoken, dash forward, jump forward tatsu or just wait

thanks for the reply hmm maybe i’ll change mygame play a little bit… im still new to street fighter and I can only do simple and short combo moves…

hi again

i have been playing for almost 3months now but i cant still do
Shoryu->FADC->ULTRA in a match but in the practice mode i can do it like 30% im still not good at it though. What should i do to do it in a match when i usually thinking of it my game play will become messy because of random shoryuken. will i practice it first like 50 times in a row in the practice mode? but i just learned the technique like 2weeks ago after i bought and use my arcade stick for the first time.
sorry for the bad English. english is my 2nd language

You can try buffering the dash.
:r: :mp:+:mk: :r:

Also if you want to practice your consistency, hop into training mode and turn on counter hits. Makes your opponent go higher into the air.

Don’t worry about it. No offense, but at your skill level it’s not really that important. So just try working on other aspects of your game.

Well, I just went to my first tournament this weekend and got my ass handed to me, but I still learned a lot from it. But I’ve got a question about Kara Focus. I borrowed a TE stick to mess around with some before the tournament started and for some reason, even though I was inputting Kara Throw, it was doing Kara focus. I don’t know if the controls were off but it brought up a question in my mind, “How do I actually do a Kara Focus?” I was thinking about it and to hit f.MK then MK+MP would take a really fast input to cancel those frames. So, Is there another way it’s supposed to be done or do I just need to work on hitting the buttons really fast?

i just roll my fingers down on mk ~ mp. where my thumb just lands a tiny bit ahead of my middle finger, if you lead with your thumb on the way down and roll the wrist down into it you should be able to pick it up quickly.

ill try to practice that buffering thing its a new thing to me hehe … and thanks for the reply by the way

yeah its not really important at my level now but i just feel bad that my opponent landing an ultra easily and im not landing any. i know that it is hard to set up ken’s full ultra and u must work hard to defeat your opponent and not depending on your ultra that’s what i like about ken u must work hard and be tough to defeat any opponent that you face.

and by the way is rufus poking abilities greater than ken? i’m working on my bnb’s with ken now but i just know some of his bnb is there a list of it? i have seen many bnb’s scattered around the forum and i don’t know what bnb’s should i practice it’s just to many. and sorry for my bad english and noobish question hope u understand all.

What do you use to kara cancel the air hurricane?

I use mk~hk. It’s really easy to get an accidental ex one for me though. I might be doing it wrong

Sup man. Preciate that. So, you using Ken? How are you faring with him in the ATL? So you can kara with mk jumping both straight up and forward/backward too?

I’m not that great with him around here, Eddie and JTO have it locked down. I don’t know a ton about it but someone told me that hk~mk is better than what I’ve been doing but I always ex that way. You really in Japan now?

Ken B&Bs

c.lk, c.lp, Fierce Shoryu

c.lk, c.lp, c.mk Tatsu

Don’t worry about Ken’s other combos until you have those down. If you have to add an extra c.lp in there from time to time, no worries. Just mind your distance.

Thanks Lulu, I’ll test it out.

And for anyone who is having trouble with Kara Tatsu (Kara Air Hurricane Kick), here’s a great video that explained it to me really well.
