Hm, that would be cool thought someone said it worked as of beta 3 where they introduced the CC change. I’d be skeptical, but if it worked there I’d have given it a bit more credence. Confirming is impossible without the retail release.
That counter-hit sweep change would allow for some seriously sweet opportunities for Ken, it could possibly make way for some some valid options with his cross-up tatsu(Outside of V-Trigger) as well if somebody could find legitimate set-ups that have it land and be able to confirm from. The reward factor from st.rh CC would definitely go up.
The problem is that it have a further hitbox until frame 10; you have a close hitbox on frame 3 and 4, then nothing for 5-9 as he moves forward, then a new one on frame 10. MK Tatsu doesn’t work either due to having an even smaller first two frame hitbox.
Above is an assortment of Julio/Jame matches from the Madcatz event - it’s the PSX build as most of you know so changes have happened since.
Dear lord I love Julio’s ability with Ken, so quick to adjust to the character.
Game one -
Really like the mileage he got out of st.mk, I think Nacer was quite passive vs. his pressure and was heavily respecting him at least from the first game. I can respect the st.lk into either st.mk/run cancel - it looked half decent. The EX fireball conversions were really nice to see, wonder how long he had to play? He seemed quite well versed from that game alone. So good to finally see somebody utilizing the V-Reversals! The st.mp whiff punish was also nice to see.
Game two -
Less respect during the pressure, a couple of check jabs made Julio calm himself down a bit and he withdrew a little more when he had pressure opportunities. This match just had a different pace, I think Nacer may have been slightly more familiar with Chun-Li. Unsure how to take that game.
He made Ken look nice, I know it isn’t the current build but it was nice to see someone who was familiar with the character just go in on somebody. I still find the character appealing I just wish he was slightly more lethal up close, apart from a few hindering factors I think if you’re competent as a player Ken will (hopefully) shine.
EDIT*
How do you OS the run on CC? Just delay the input so it misses it’s cancel frames on block?
Always can just outside v-trigger it is really bad on hit / block. Unless you do it perfectly last frame to the ground hitting you are basically negative/neutral on hit and negative on block. In V-trigger think of it like his SF4 one.
Is Capcom trolling us? You still can’t confirm shit with 3 frames of advantage and now the opponent can stuff the move with light attacks from distances they couldn’t and shouldn’t.
By release, Ken will get stunned if he gets his TC blocked.
This is really, REALLY bad… Cr mp -> cr mp no longer beats 3 frame lights. There goes his last reliable frametrap.
Those are interesting. The fwd movement reduction for ex srk is certainly a nerf for his whiff punishing game and it might affect lk tatsu combos (same for juggle potential changes).
But MK tatsu while nerfed in damage and stun could potentially allow a follow up juggle which is nice for damage and especially corner carry.
The ex tatsu proximity block change means that it’s harder to punish when done raw. Rather unconventional decision.
If a hp srk doesn’t connect after a cr mp -> back mp -> lk tatsu then the v-trigger is now just an expensive combo extender.
This is telling. They really do expect us to base our game around random CC presses.
kara’s were intentionally removed from the game from the startup of moves. When you kara you no longer get any movement. That was a beta 1 -> beta 2 system change.
The change was to EX AIR TATSU, his divekick. It just makes it easier to space. I thought it was kinda hard to space and it was likely because they could literally walk back out of it if you aimed for the toes. Given it can’t be done from a neutral jump to help you space it anymore most likely this was to help spacing it to be actually not garbage.
If all those nerfs are true, seriously put a fork in him. He is done. Unless we are missing something REALLY good with him at a fundamental level, I don’t see what on earth is good enough to warrant those nerfs.
It’s not just the fact that he got nerfed again, most of the cast got buffs in beta 4, especially in the damage department. They should make pink his default color, rename him to Ken Hibiki and be done with it.
