I think people are failing to comprehend how different parry is going to make Ryu. It’s totally something that changes the way you play the game.
From the footage that I’ve seen, parry is mostly used to parry full-screen fireballs and jump-in attacks. The latter is unnecessary now due to the fact that unlike 3s, you can actually anti-air without worrying about getting air-parried.
Nobody is using it offensively at the moment, and that’s mostly because…
The game is new, nobody knows the flow of the game. Once you understand when players like to press buttons, using parry offensively becomes something your opponents will fear, they will think twice about pressing buttons against you.
They don’t know the ideal punish, which will take some lab-work. That and there being a whiff animation, it’s just too risky for people to experiment offensively, especially when you have to wait in a long ass line when you lose.
It’s just not embedded in their strategy. It’s something that you need to get in the habit of doing.
At the moment, I don’t think parry has enough plus frames, but that could just be because people aren’t punishing correctly, who knows. With that said, I think it’s a tool that will make him one scary mother fucker, considering the damage and stun he outputs. He may seem like he doesn’t have enough right now, but he can cause guard-crush with super and charged hado, and nobody knows setups yet? Yeah, he’s going to be just fine, and he’s definitely going to feel entirely different to Ken.
How exactly did the Ken thread gain more views in a few days than any of the other characters since release? Ok the Dictator thread has more than 10k views but Ken got 7k views in a few days, the Dictator thread has been around for months.
1 - They visually redesigned one of the most iconic characters of SF, something they really haven’t done since Alpha
2 - He looks mad fun to play. Not just because he’s easily the flashiest character, but because all the options look meaningful and fun to use
3 - He has bananas in his hair
Dictator got some changes, more changes than any of the other “I appear in every game” originals aside from Ken (Cammy, Ryu, Chun). Some changes to his moveset and he has grey hair now. But the drastic changes to Ken’s appearance have taken the “surprise factor” cake thus far over all the other reveals. His move set looks incredible as well, especially with the “Tatsu-Dive Kick” special move he has going on now.
People are definitely underestimating Ryu now more than ever. His parry covers high and low like in Omega SF4. The drawback is that parry isn’t always a practical option. But that’s how 3S is also anyway. You gotta look for your parry opportunities and be immediately ready for your combo to counter. So it’s going to work like “focus attack, combo” instead of how it is in 4 with “focus attack, dash cancel, combo”.
I don’t know how it’ll work against block strings though. Like maybe against “jab jab” block strings, you have to parry all of it, or other designated block strings like Ken or Charlie, maybe you’ll have to parry all of it. I just thought of something that people might also be forgetting is that with Ryu parry you won’t be hit with gray health from blocking something instead, which in the end stage of the game, could count for a lot.
Also it’s funny but makes sense how Ryu is being mentioned from time to time in this thread. I mean you can’t talk about Ken without making comparisons and analogies to Ryu.
I’m going to quote myself on this, as I think this thought out and detailed opinion of mine really exemplifies what is really meaningful to the average player.
You are making two errors here.
[] Chained lights aren’t blockstrings
[] Wanting to parry lights in SF5
Well you’re making one error here: Not explaining yourself. In 3S you could parry and punish light attacks with at least a throw before the other light came out. Of course that could be different than in 5, but you’re actually emphasizing my point by mentioning how chained lights aren’t block strings.
It appears Cr. Mp and Cr. Mk both have enough on hit advantage to go into B+Mp~Hp (TC)
So even linking into Cr. Mp and Cr. Mk with lights open up your BNB possibilities.
Just have to know what the push back on all those moves together look like and see what hits in full.
I know Maximillian mentioned HP Srk will actually drop out if you aren’t close enough for the full animation to connect. making Mp SRK the go to in most cases.
S.Lp go into TC so i’m pretty sure it’s the same for C.Lp.
I can see C.LP, TC, DAI shoryuken as our primary BNB. For the distance the MP Shoryu seems not really good.
So i think that when Ken will be too far for HPShoryu, Tatsu will be the way to go, with the KND it will be a great tool.
However i can be wrong, it’s Just my opinion right now and i need to know Ken better, especially in SFV.
