But if it’s on reaction to fireball, are they able to block or punish it? It seems like they are always still in recovery. Maybe what I think is reaction on my end is really a read. Hard to tell, I don’t really play high level players being Silver so I don’t see people punishing my Ressenha much.
Higher up people will start punishing it. It’s ok as a reactionary tool to punish fireballs from certain distances from Karin, but kinda depends on their recovery. Harder to use against Nash/Chun than Ryu/Ken.
back-throw nash sonic boom (which like 90% of nashes autopilot) is punishable by quick-stand into resenha. and its telegraphed super hard.
always pains me to see in high level play that nobody ever even tries that
Nash/Chun fireballs are much easier to react to than Shotos. Then again, no shoto should be throwing anything other than the HP fireball in the neutral unless it’s a meaty setup.
Easier to react to, but you have to be closer to punish. Not by much though. I tested it last night and basically as long as you’re in range to hit both punches of ressenha vs a shoto, you can punish them before they recover from it and can do anything. Have to buffer qcb though.
Guile on the other hand…
I’ve done this at least once per match since you said this, haha.
on better opponents it will most likely work exactly once, so better save it till you can cancel resenha into super. 400dmg punish for simple sonic boom, aww yes
I have had a lot of success with jump-in fierce -> standing fierce xx EX Ressenha. However, I have only connected against the CPU and haven’t been able to play online since SFV launched. Is this a valid combo or am I just getting lucky against the CPU?
I mean, I guess it’s “valid” but it’s not optimal at all. You can get more damage for no meter by doing jump in fierce, cr mp, st mp, JF Tenko, Orochi or jump in Fierce, cr mp, cr mk, JF Tenko, Orochi
Yeah, not sure if that’s worth the meter even though it looks dope, so I played around with EX Orochi - Guren Ken a bit. You can get some pretty decent gimmicks off of that.
EX Orochi > Guren Ken > Resshu to gives you a crossover into meaty. c.MP beats everything if they quickrise, s.HP beats everything if they backtech. EX Orochi > Guren Ken > Chochu > Resshu stays in front every time. You get a lot more frame advantage here: s.HK crush counters quickrises. Didn’t really find anything great to do if they backtech, but delay s.HK still crush counters and delay s.HP reaches just fine. You also get a meaty uncharged V-skill, but that’s… pretty bad.
It’s not as good as JFT - Guren Ken > Resshu as a left-right mixup (since you can always know which side Karin lands on), but it can surprise people every once in a while.
EX Orochi > Guren Ken > Senha gives you a meaty c.MP on quickrise and a CCH s.HK on backtech. Stays in front every time.
EX Orochi > Guren Ken > Chochu > Kusabi seems pretty strong as well. Leaves you right in their face with huge frame advantage on quickrise. You get a charged V-skill on backtech as well (not a true meaty, but beats 3f jabs).
by the way, since nobody ever uses ex.mujin:
a)nobody knows the framedata (its -2)
b)nobody knows when animation ends. and it ends deceptively early
you can yolo cr.mp for counterhits because most people will punish it way too late and get rekt or just continue blocking.
i like to throw it every once in a while, so far opponent confusion rate is about 80%
its all gimmicks ofc and will only work on lower-tier opponents. goes very well to close up the round lol
Ye, EX Mujin is an underrated move for sure. Katt has hit me with empty jump low > EX Mujin a bunch of times. It works.
Furthermore, the move starts up in 8 frames and is safe on block, so you can occasionally just throw it out in neutral as nobody seems to expect it. And the good old -2 into reversal gimmick is still ever present. I vaguely recall that it also goes through fireballs, gonna verify that when I get home.
Do anyone know if we get any setups from it in the corner?
It’s useful to get out of the corner for free. Its pushback even on block is awesome.
It’s not elegant, however, it works from time to time to get some breath when cornered.
Also, It’s very recommended for punishing backdashes from Nash.
Thanks a whole lot for this post. I don’t have regular access to youtube and the .gifs are extremely helpful in illustrating tactics for me. Obviously videos are far better tools and 99% of users can view them, but as I am a 39 year old with ass reactions who plays this game maybe 2 hours a week, every little bit helps. Will finally be back online in two weeks and feel extra pressure to be at least halfway decent with Karin now that people are starting to suggest she’s high tier. Uh oh.
