Kansas City, pick some mains or quit already

hey guys… just got arcana heart 2, kof max impact Rev A, and KOF ulitmate match '98 added to the arcade if anyones interested.

–Axiom- were not all negative… but youre right.
–chachi- turtling may be illegal in StL but i bet theyre allowed to play for fun
–everyone- i always play for fun… i always get better…im not a complete scrub
–vincent- i really enjoyed the random tournament event style you hosted. we need to run that at one of my hookups or at axioms. the people who go to those seem to know how to play errr… focus on… more than one game. my azn (with a killer zang) said she would play more if the hookups were like that.
–ben- 3rd stirke is tha shit? how can you dis it? as capcom have said themselves, its geared to the truely hardcore and skilled players… shouldnt that be up you ally mr.i only play to be the best? 3rd strike HAS been replaced by 4 in my heart- and if thats what you meant when you dis’ed 3s, i’ll agree with your comment. we all should be focusing on sf4- BUT it is also good to play other games, it opens you eyes to shit you dont get when you stick to just one game.

Thanks for all the birthday well wishes! The party was a blast. Here are the results/noteworthy play-by-play:

Grab bag lotto:
—1st game selected: SSF2T:HDR–Winner: Jspot cleaned house in this classic!
—2nd game slected: KoF2k2–Winner: Asa pulled out an upset against yours truly, L182!
—3rd game selected: SF3:3rd Strike-- Winner: Jspot won against my wife, JenW, which gave Jennie a by in SF4 as only 1 by was allowed per player!
—4th game selected: SSBB: Teresa’s Kirby was beast in the 4 way free for all mayhem!

Which brings us to our final Street Fighter 4!
*L182 and Jspot started out strong with L182 eeking out a win in the 1st match. Grape-a-Licious Guile saga continues!
*However, Jspot decided to use his by to rematch. Jspot then won in a very very close match.
*Then heated words got exchanged as Teresa devastated JenH. Pringles to the max!
*Asa then got a win against JenW. She then used her by to rematch, only to lose out again!

Then it went into a round robin to as Jspot, Teresa, and Asa were in a 3 way tie for first! After the round robin, all 3 contenders remained tied 1-1,which threw it into sudden death! The deciding battle was Jspot’s narrow victory over Asa in the last 5 secs of the match! Leaving Jspot 2-0 to take the Grand Championship!

A few notes:
Teresa’s Zang is beast at times! She can contend with the best of them.
Asa has definitely leveled up a bit with his Dan. Tier lists be damned!

Overall it was an awesome party. Special thanks go out to Jspot for bringing the extra setup. YAHOO!!!

fun as hell… gg’s @ vincents

we all lvl’d up and got in some good Tatsunoko vs Capcom. after the tournies.

Speaking of the negativity issues and because I like to beat dead horses to a pulp too:

Asa has mentioned this has happened before with D&D groups he and I have been in and I agree.

Geek drama is just that, drama. You’re always gonna have longtime/hardcore players bemoaning newcomers inability to grasp simpler advanced concepts in their respective games. It seems to me picking a main in fighting games is as vital to playing pro in fighting games as learning how to add up your Thac0 or understanding your saving throw chart in D&D. Many longtime D&D players also complain about wasted time as newcomers have a hard time learning the game.

Then you have the same social play vs. casual play issues. Like here at SRK you have those hardcore D&D players who bemoan the casuals appearance and somehow turn things into a social event. But what people need to realize as many eventually do is that these hookups much like D&D play sessions are in fact social events. It’s the nature of the beast. Inviting someone to your home to play a game, be it D&D, SF4, or even chess is indeed a social activity, whether people like it or not.

There is a human component to these games which cannot be ignored. That human component desires to socialize and network especially when people play each other in person. Some may need more socializing than others to enjoy a game, others may not. I myself am somewhere in the middle.

It seems that we have come to a conclusion of sorts on the drama issue here back at page 2. Which is good. The sooner we overcome these issues the sooner we can get back to playing the game at hand and all get pro at this. Because if we don’t, the fighting game scene will get very scarce much like the D&D scene did back in the late 90s(very few players, play sessions few a far between). Thus ends my $0.02 on the issue and I will say no more on this.

@Jspot— The concept went over better than I thought, however, there was bit more feedback about the number of SF titles in the bag(too many). Perhaps the grab bag can be geared towards the crowd that shows up to enhance the fun. There were some who really wanted MK2 thrown in and some who wished there was more Naruto games. I myself wouldn’t have minded another KOF entry selected. P.S. I might be able to hang with you and your crew this Thurs. maybe even Jennie will come.

@Twilightfox—Get well soon. Feel better!

One final note: Any hookups going on this week? I’m on vacation all week and am free just about anyday this week except Wednesday and Saturday.

Till then, keep it real and stay foxy!

Gg’s Indeed! Not to mention the throw down in SFA3! ^_^./m

P.S.: I got my netbook! Acer’s Aspire One netbook is awesomeness on a stick! Yay-ness! Firefox, how I have missed thee! Specs here if you’re curious:

I am shoto fan. I always like to play Ryu. Chun-li is awesome too.

This.

Also, this wasn’t drama…Axiom vs. Just Saul was drama, it’s not drama unless someone says money match I’m pretty sure.

I don’t think anybody has written anybody off, I said I hate hookups with people who aren’t good and are not actively trying to get better. I’d really like to go to your hookups because it seems like the only one Kong goes to. Also anyone who plays a fighting game at a national level is probably going to be as good as I will ever be at sf4 so that would be good too.

But when I get beat by someone good and have to wait for that person to beat 5 people who are not good and just there to hangout it gets really old really fast.

That was Rex0r, He’s from STL…he’s coming to steal our fight money…or so he thinks, but he’s gonna CHOKE AND GET BEASTED BY MY ABEL HAAAAAAAA

Whats this deal about picking a main? I suppose I’m all good as I mainly use just Ken. But I’m not tourney training or looking to be God of all video games. I’m only down to play some games for fun and to win some lose some. Hope that doesn’t keep ppl from wanting to challenge me. I know Luigi182 is looking to avenge some loses and I’m looking to get my revenge against Chachi. but i’m afraid Chachi might have advance a few more levels higher then me. I haven’t played SF4 in 2wks. just started up playing again yesterday. plus still no stick for me.

Yo Tommy I’ll play you man. I’m aight at SF4 but i remember back then in CVS2 you were on point. I’m sure you still have the skills.

Kemo- Hit me up next time you see me online.

Please let there be a hookup tomorrow- trying to practice against people online is killing my will to live.

good shit chach, fuck 4 online…

STL reppin hard next weekend, add Kurusa(jeff the guy who ran aerial rave) to the list of people coming out. I wouldnt doubt if he brought some, as well as NKI/Glen comin saturday. Me/Kaal/SuperFX will still be there friday to get lots of Seth matches in ;).

Oh and i think i understand what benra ment with this thread. If you dont have solid(any? :p) fundamentals and basics, and dont have a character you can challenge a decent player with, then it does get old especialy on 1 tv. Now its not that you suck that has him not wanting to play, its the fact your not improving(thinking, practicing, etc.) or even trying to stick to one character to get a grasp on the game. If you lose everytime and change characters every time well wtf, how u gonna learn. I gotta say i agree, until you get some basics and can beat people at least a good amount of the time, pleeeeease stick to one character then. Nothing worse than someone who doesnt learn from a defeat, improve at all, and then just keeps changing characters :/. Pick a character, know thier anti airs, cross ups, combos, best combo off a FA, FA cancels, ultra setups, good pokes, etc and you’ll see some improvement. Basics, solid basics.

Chachi- No doubt i’ll get at you man.

Rex0r - Ok man I feel you guys now about picking mains. I’m always playing Ken trying to learn how to do more combos. I could use some help and understanding on how to get Ken’s combos down though. It’s so much harder with a Dpad. But I’m holding my own. I’m needing to get more time to practice so i don’t fall on the shit list of not advancing. But with a Pregnant fiance and baby on due come june 14th. it’s hard to get that strong practice in. Either way it’s all in fun to me. i know some take it serious but unless there is $ on the table it’s just a game to me. HADOKEN:nunchuck:

You are correct. The fire still burns! I will get better…

This.

I had hoped that the online scrubs would have eventually washed away by now. Most other online games tend to have a drop in users after the 3 month mark after release leaving the dedicated players to enjoy the game against other dedicated gamers. Perhaps it will take longer for SF4?

my username on ps3 is gekkiie

Chachi bro I have no idea why our connection today was so shitty. I continued to reboot over and over but it just didn’t work. Even though you and I played twice thru such a shitty signal I couldn’t pull anything off correctly. At times i would jump twice when i just need to jump once. Or my fav was the swinging at the air while you were at the far end of the screen. Hopefully we can get a better signal and get it on. :karate:

Luigi182 dude I’m going to attempt to get on this morning. We both work night and i think that is the best time for the both of us. Lets say around 8ish. Cuz 11ish I’m

Tommy add me man. :woot:

i’m glad to see k.c tryin to get better.

as far as wanting to improve at sf iv is concerned, rex makes a really good point.

if you don’t wanna get better, you’re not a challenge. people want a challenge. i wouldn’t want to play kickball with a bunch of 4th graders. it just wouldn’t be fun…ok, i lied, i think that would be fun. so don’t listen to me.

I’m all about improving but yet I’m also all about having fun. It all good to want to be challenged everytime I admit but the moment I filp out from losing. it’s not even worth it. Unless there is $ on the line. I have a main “Ken Masters”. I would like to learn Vega, Balrog and C.Viper. I can’t pull Vega’s Ultra off for shit. Looking for pointers on when i need to start Ken’s Super Dragon punch cancel focus then finish with the ultra. Or whatever it is. :looney: We’ve all seen the combo on youtube.

C.Viper :hitit:

Vince- Sorry man, it didn’t happen

Kemo- PS3 wifi is weaksauce, find a longass ethernet cable and you should have better results. There should be some FADC tutorials with Ken on Youtube, look those up since it’s hard for me to describe the timing. I was disappointed with the actual damage though- I only managed to get 386 damage when I actually pulled it off in training mode. Once you get your dash cancels down, it’s a pretty straightforward deal, since the dash will put you almost right underneath your opponent…

Ben- See you Thursday, hopefully we can do shit off jab by then…

Alright, so here’s something I unfortunately forgot to include in the tournament page:

We need to have enough TV’s to run this thing smooth, quick, and clean. If people bring setups that get used in the tournament (Setup meaning TV’s and systems) you will get your venue fee waived. Hell, i’ll even waive the venue fee if you can just bring a TV. We’re hurting for those most.

@kemoiwan: I’ll attempt to get on this morning, but no guarantees. Today is our wedding anniversary and I think the Mrs. may have something in mind for me when she awakens. :lovin: Anyhow, you mentioned needing help/having difficulties in doing Vega’s Super/Ultra. I main both Guile and Vega(claw), so here’s a quick deal I learned about doing their Super/Ultra:

To start off, Guile’s and Vega’s(claw) Super/Ultra is done like this:

Charge :db: for 2 sec.,:df:,:db:,:uf:+:k: or (:3k: for ultra) when facing right.

1.Now, one of the more basic things one needs to remember is the 2 sec portion is not always the 2 sec. on the slow ass round clock at the top of the screen. You may know this from trying to learn how to do a flash kick or a flying barcelona more quickly. You’ll need to get a feel for when Vega’s charge time actualy is(It’s a touch less time than you think, it even slightly less for Vega than Guile oddly enough, imho). Once you get that down we can move on to step 2.

  1. Here’s where it gets confusing, but it will make sense and click when you finally pull it off:

The :db:'s of this move are the only inputs of the move that must fall into place and must be :db:

The :df: portion of this move can substituted for ANY direction that includes forward(:r:). Which means :df:, :r:, or :uf: will work in the sequence.

The :uf: portion of this move can be substituted for ANY direction that includes up(:u:). Which means ::ub:,:u:, or :uf: will work in the sequence.

Additionally, the CPU in SF4 will allow for slop. So an additional direction or button presses accidentally thrown in between the diagonals can/will get ignored by the CPU if the move is done quickly enough. (I.E. Guile’s canceled Flash Kick into super is done like this: Charge :db:, :uf:+:hk:, :db:,:uf:+:hk:)

  1. Now, taking all that into account, Guile and Vega’s Ultra and Super can now become a sort of modified version of one the more popular KoF’s UDM motions(Think Ryo’s, K’s, Kyo’s, or Iori’s UDM which is done thusly: :d::df::r::df::d::db::l:).
    Except, the execution is this:
Charge :db:,:d::df::d::db::l::ub:+:k: or (:3k: for Ultra)

This may sound confusing as ever, but like I said, once you do it in practice mode and pull it off, it’ll click and make sense almost instantly especially if you’ve ever played a KoF game. Good luck :karate:

@chachi: Yeah, I understand. Besides, laundry took longer than I thought so, no joy. Further, the Mrs. was on a Numbers marathon since she thought I wasn’t gonna be home last night. Which meant I couldn’t even get on PS3 so even less joy.

And echoing chachi’s sentiment, hard wiring your ps3 connection to your router with an Ethernet cable is the best way to reduce lag…
