Kansas City Drinking: We Have a Serious Fighting Game Problem

Dwayne - I was thinking about something a little more complex.

I’ve been doing a little research on the True Skill system that xbox live uses (over 150 titles says wiki) and it seems really good. Also they provide a calculator for you on the site and a pretty in depth explanation. I could easily pound things out from past tournament brackets. So I’ll just start with what’s on challonge for us and we can go from there. The cool part of this is you can basically do anything with it and make as many or as few ranking matches as you wanted. Start and stop “seasons.” Tournaments are easily incorporated. Hell, you could even incorporate your performance at majors and out of town if you wanted to give some top players or unfamiliar players an assumed μ and σ value. People interested?

With the calculator they provide, updating would be cake. Thoughts?

Trueskill is a great system…so I’ve heard, and the biggest problem with it is circumvented since we aren’t playing online (I’ve heard people complaining about boosting). So something like that would work.

Slick thinking, Nick. I like it.

FatalKO. New STL ranbat

So I started by plugging T6 into the calculator since the tourns were small and there were 2 of them on challonge. Interesting stuff. Here’s what I came up with:

The format is “Player name, True Skill rating.”

  1. Dat Boi STL, 27.705
  2. Jodi The Great, 19.579
  3. Axiom, 18.064
  4. Boxy, 14.404
  5. Prod1gy, 9.121
  6. Mister Mister, 6.962
  7. BMJ, 4.965
  8. Samson, -1.131
  9. MGF, -1.79

I plan on keeping a spreadsheet to keep track of changes so just in case something gets fucked up or people have questions they can see the progression. I hope to write a program for this stuff eventually but until then I’m punching this into the calculator match by match and chronologically so it’ll take a while for all games. You can view the spreadsheet here:

This is a pretty damned good idea, Nick. Why reinvent the wheel. I didn’t chime in on trying to create a system earlier because I know what writing algorithm’s entails, and I’m so over all of that. You dug up something really convenient.

I think if we round up tournament results from say, the last 6 months, and use that as a starting point for the calculations, we could probably get a pretty good idea of where most people are standing.

Maybe I’ll join you on this. If you need help with the clerical work, let me know.

Probley not going to be there, Have school tomorrow morning.

John - It’ll definitely work for MK9, Blaz, AH3, and T6. But as far as the main games, both Marvel and SF, they’re new games as of December so it wouldn’t be fair to use old rankings. KoF is new as well, obviously. If you wanted to dig up old brackets on those games I can enter them in, but its not really that necessary. Things will just work themselves out eventually.

You can just keep me at the bottom of all the lists, I’ll play the people I need to play in the games I need to play them in when I feel like playing said game.

I like True Skill ranking but I can’t stand it when it doesn’t take into account the number of times played. You have no idea how pissed I get when someone with 5 games gets ranked the same as someone with 1000 games. People under a certain number need to just not be on the list.

You’ll have a ranking anyway because right now all I’m doing is tournament results so tough titters. Besides if you don’t care so much then you shouldnt care about a little number anyway. Just in case you do care though, The formula for the true skill rank is [mu - 3 * sigma] where mu is the mean and sigma is the standard deviation. Everyone starts with a sigma of 8.333 and that number drops as you play more games and the formula brings you closer to what your rank actually should be. So really, the more games you play, the further sigma drops, and the more the equation favors you. Look at the spreadsheet. Even though BMJ has a higher mu than Dave, Dave ends up being ranked higher because he has a lower sigma due to playing more matches.

Edit: If you really just want to be a buzzkill, I can just not post your rank. However, I’ll have to keep a running total in the spreadsheets to figure out the results when people play you.

You can have me on the list, but most likely I won’t be FT5ing people so it will all be based on tourny stuff which is fine.

Reminder -hookup this TONIGHT!!! my place- 7oclock GO TO THE BACK FUKKEN BASEMENT DOOR. IF THIS IS NOT FOLLOWED THIS WILL BE THE LAST HOOKUP AT MY PLACE. the wife has spoken.

So, I had a long, emo post, like pretty much made my eyes bleed after reading it. Instead of posting a whole slew of garbage and unnecessary bullshit I figure I would just say…I’m done. 100%, absolutely, unequivocally, most absolutely, done. Its just not worth my time. Hookups, tournaments, everything, I’M FUCKING DONE.

you know people are gonna just ask you why. maybe you at least owe the KC fam an explanation. at the same time, im curious as well. if you dont wanna post here, ill hear you out in PMs. you know we chill. ill be your dude.

Boxy; that’s quite the surprise…you seemed quite alright before. O.o

its awesome to come in here and find someone say “i’ll be your dude”. i love the group we have.

im sorry shit got weird. your host and his wife were acting like children. and for that to happen with all you guests over, im highly embarrassed. sure theres probably explanations for everything - but honestly im still trying to piece it all together, and explanations arent gunna make things better - again sorry for that.

it was good to see everyone super involved/motivated in the RR.

i learned a huge problem of my own last night. RL can destroy my sf performance. ive known about this issue of mine for quite some time but not to the degree of last night. ive never had so much trouble squeaking out wins or end up losing WHILE playing decent… i dont know. Definitely have issue keeping attention if RL is breathing down my back. its like im working really hard to build something (ie train you, read you, etc) on top of quick sand… the brick i lay just disappear and im back to square one.

good showing by everyone tho. 15 players in a tester RR… even though it was incomplete i think chachi won.

teresa cut us off at the breaker, lol - as pissed as i should be, i gotta say i love her.
Again, good showing, sorry for the awkward, hope to see people next week.

oh and boxy, WTF are you talking about?

Perhaps you are burned out. Instead of quitting why not just take some tyme off( a month or two) from games/hook ups/tournaments and then come back to see if you feel differently and if you don’t then you could quit if you want.

Shoutouts to Rob and Drew for making me look like a fucking scrub last night. Holy shit…I was playing terribly. Got blown up for crouch-teching; missed combos and punished, etc. Also, big ups to Arkive for beatin’ me. I shouldn’t have picked Makoto…but at least I got that Guile theme goin’! :3

As for tonight, if it’s still going on, I REALLY want to play some Tekken. I’ve got a notebook I’ll be using to write shit down, and need to figure a lot out. I’m using Asuka, since I figure a defensive character would be a good start. Need to learn how to crawl before I walk lol. Also UMvC3 if we have time (Sorry we couldn’t get time in last night, Nick…shit got crazy).

There are a lot of reasons for my decision. Dave is partially right, I am burned out, I’ve been doing this for a long time and I don’t have the drive to practice at all. On top of that no game that has come out recently has been able to keep my attention for long, maybe TTT2 will fix that but I wouldn’t bet on it. At this point all I’m doing is trolling other players that put time in effort into the game by beating them with either random tactics or just natural talent at fighting games from years of experience.

Couple being burned out with me being very tired of the drama that has been slowly getting worse throughout the community from a lot of different sources. I legit care about pretty much everyone in the community and hate to see shit go wrong but honestly it’s not something I want to put myself in the middle of on a weekly basis. It would be easy to say I could just ignore it but that’s just not me, as much of an asshole as I am in gaming, I tend to try to be a mediator and always find myself in the middle of shit that I had nothing to do with.

I’m not cutting everyone off or anything, I am more than happy to grab a drink with anyone or poke my head in during a maxout to watch and shoot the shit but my controller is put up in terms of fighting games for now.

At least you’re up front about it man. I can see where you’re coming from…although I don’t know about your personal life (and wont prod about it). As long as you’re not abandoning us entirely, that’s cool. Everyone has to hang up the reigns eventually.
