[July 9, 2013] 8otB Weekly: CAN YOU MAKE ME A SANDWICH? (UMvC3 & Injustice) (Dunellen, NJ)

If gameon cant change the day they can do their tournament why not change the day the break ia run?

First of all, we shouldn’t have to. We’ve been doing Tuesday night tournaments at the break for TWELVE YEARS now.

Secondly, no other dates are available. All tournaments within an 1 hour radius have worked together to make sure events don’t conflict. The Break, Local Battles, Big Two, Guard Crush, etc never conflicted with each other. It’s a common courtesy we all extended to each other.

Well, that’s sad. Maybe I’m the eternal optimist but I think both tournaments can exist. I mean, this really started as a bunch of kids who couldn’t get to the break running some unofficial battles in a card shop’s back room. We were happy to run the tournament at 4 people, and if it drops far enough that only the original four come we will be happy to run it then as well. The owner of the shop is really friendly, he really wants to support the community and he’s willing to let us keep coming no matter how many people show up. Heck, we only have two TVs normally and that’s just me and my friend’s personal TVs because we really want to meet other people in the community. Not only that, but I’ve seen a lot of people come to Game On that never went to the break. I mean… I thought I was doing a good thing by introducing new people to the community that never went before. Just tonight over half of our tournament entrants said they never entered a tournament before. That’s gotta be a good thing right?

I guess I just don’t see Game On stopping because it’s entrants fall. We have different new people coming in every day and some don’t return, some do. However, the entrant number was never important to me, or to the guys I started this with. All we really wanted was to have a space to play together. Since it’s a card shop, the owner doesn’t really lose money by having our meetups there. His main revenue is from, you know, Magic the Gathering and selling board games and stuff like that. So he has no reason to tell us to stop either.

I always looked at The Break as the big Starbucks of the NJ gaming scene and Game On was sorta like a small corner cafe. Most people go to Starbucks, but corner cafes still exist as well. I really thought that the people coming to Game On were the people who weren’t going to The Break anyway, whether its due to game choice or distance or whatever, and so far it seems like that’s the mostly the case. I wish i could change the date to not compete with you but I can’t, and asking us to stop basically just takes away a tournament scene from another group of people. Still, I’m going to continue to play the optimist. I hope that Game On can introduce more North Jersey gamers to the fighting game scene and that they, one day, might come to The Break as well. I’ll do my best to run games The Break isn’t running. I’m convinced that we can both co-exist, and hopefully this will just make the fighting game community grow.

Either way, I hope you don’t take the existence of Game On as an insult or an affront to The Break. Like I said before, The Break basically inspired me to do this in the first place. It got to a point where I couldn’t make The Break on Tuesdays, nor could my friends, and we just figured we would start up a tournament series for the sheer love of playing the game. That’s what Game On’s tournaments are about. We aren’t trying to run anyone out of business. We just want a place we can play.

correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure nothing goes down on mondays or fridays. i just really want both tournaments to be ran. all i can see having another weekly is a way of making the scene stronger. im a third party in this but i feel it’s something that should be discussed.

first reason being location. when im at school, i can go to the break because its 15 minutes away and i can get a ride and it has soul calibur and marvel, which are games i play. when im home, i go to game on because it isnt that far away and the break is an absolute bitch to get to from where im at. before game on held tournaments, i didnt even go to anything unless it was salty battles which was ran once a month at the time.

if you guys are running different games, i dont see it as a problem because then no matter what you play, there is still a place to play that game. for example, if you guys dropped marvel and game on picked it up, the marvel community still has a tournament to go to. right now it seems that if you want to play AE, you HAVE to go to nextlevel which is an absolute bitch to get to if you are trying to use public transit. the last njtransit train is at 1:22AM and it takes roughly 45 minutes to get to next level from penn station, which a lot of people can’t do on a week day.

i just want there to be a place to play for everyone.

Dude… if game on was open on a monday I would run on a monday in a heartbeat, but it isn’t.

wow this is lame

Thats not how it works… It may be different games, but its the same community. It’s not about the game, its about the players. AE players also play Marvel, and Marvel players also play AE. To run an AE tournament 30 minutes away from a Marvel tournament, you end up cannibalizing the Marvel tournament… especially since you are running BOTH AE and Marvel.

What makes it even worse is that he’s advertising a COMPETING event in our thread.

Theyre running sfxt and kof as of now. I hope it gets figured out.

Look… I said if you wanted me to delete the post I would. I’m trying to be nice here! I’m trying to be civil but you seem convinced that my tournament’s very existence is harming the fighting game community. I’m frankly astounded that you think getting more people together to play more fighting games is a bad thing. You are essentially suggesting that there should only be one given venue running tournaments on any given day within NJ, or a certain area, or whatever. That tournament should have total and utter control over the games played competitively on that day in that area. If that tournament runs a game that you don’t like… tough shit. If that tournament is located in a place where you can’t get to… tough shit. It’s like you are saying AE players shouldn’t have the option to play AE because it splits us all up, whereas I just think anyone should be able to play whatever they want, wherever they want.

Let’s be candid here for a second. We got maybe 12 SF X TK entrants last tournament. We got 1 AE entrant and did not even run the tournament. That tertiary list of games are just the games I own. I’m running this like a meetup, advertising some games and letting people choose what they play beyond that. We have two TVs both of which are literally taken from our houses and a small back room to play in. We will ALWAYS be the smaller event. In fact I tell people at my events to go to the break if they feel confident enough! I’m advertising your event at my event!!! Still, I’ve gotten a lot of new people into the scene, people who have never gone to the break, and I’m happy about that. A lot of these people can’t (not won’t, can’t) make it to the break. I refuse to believe that our existence is a bad thing.

… you know what. Dynicksty is right. This is lame. I came here trying to be friendly and co-existent and generally well mannered toward the break because I have a lot of respect for you and what you guys do, but all you’ve done is shit all over my event’s existence. At this point, this conversation is going nowhere. If you want me to delete the original posts or any otehrs just say so and I will, as I said before. I meant no disrespect. I thought this was going to be a symbiotic relationship where we both pimp each other’s events so everyone can be happy. I see now that won’t happen. So simply tell me what you want me to do and I’ll do it.

Dude just run your event end of story this is unneccessary

tunnel vision on someones part.

CAPCOM GAMES > CAPCOM GAMES > CAPCOM GAMES > Mortal Kombat = Soul Caliber

maybe its time to drop shitcaliber so this “growth” can happen?

im pretty sure soul calibur isnt going anywhere.

Rutgers ugs will be making an appearance tomorrow

MarlinPie saying on twitter that tonight is cancelled? Can anyone confirm/deny? I have to leave an hour early just for hacker to not put me in the tournament normally, so if you’re not even running it it’d be pretty cool to know before I waste my whole night.

Tournament is cancelled tonight.

Edit: It’s pretty ridiculous that not one of the organizers updated the thread or used social media to announce changes concerning tonight ahead of time…especially for the tournament that HAS NEVER BEEN CANCELLED BEFORE.

HackerMike feel better soon!!!

:frowning: I miss them break steaks. I rarely get out on Tuesday’s anymore… I’ll see you guys in the summer though.l

lol JOE i miss you look what capcom’s done!!!

So what’s up with Stick sharing nowadays at the Break? I’d like to come, but I don’t have a PS3 stick.

no problems with stick sharing at all AFAIK

If that’s the case, I might come out and be a pot monster this week.

Well from now on we will be doing THREE games at the Break… UMvC3, SC5 and SFxT.

However, we do not have any copies of SFxT, anything unlocked, or anything installed. If people could bring copies of SFxT and their consoles, that would be great.
