What’s the episode, I think, in season 2 at Speedwagon/Stroheim’s base/lab where all the lab workers are all hype men and when what ever the thing they tested goes out of control and escapes they all freak out and hype the shit out of the escape? That episode had my crying, I need to find it again.
I personally disagree, but I can understand what you’re saying. I think if Abdul remained dead vs Hol/Geil then people would feel a little differently but we’ll never know.
right guys. this is jojo we’re talking about, not war and peace. what did you expect the manga and it’s current anime adaptation to be ? the pacing and dramatic arc of each episode is what keeps the series interesting in my opinion even though “it’s more of the same formula” somewhat for every installment.
Unpopular opinion incoming in 3…2…1…
I’m really sick of stands. They were awesome in Stardust, back when they were first introduced and the creative-well regarding them had’nt dried up yet. The new show is cool also.
Afterwards, in subsequent arcs, stand-mania got hokey and outlandish really fast. They’re just a gimmick in the end. Made me long for the return of the Ripple!!
No, not the spin. I’m talking about the M’fin Ripple! No, i don’t care if its less effective than stands. The Ripple was still awesome. I miss it.
I just hate how they came out of nowhere.
It would’ve been cool top have another arc with ripple and watch it develop into a stand like in the final moments of the battle. We got lolololololol stands out of fucking nowhere. .
Stands are better explained in Part IV, and Part IV is arguably one of the stronger arcs in general.
I wasn’t lying when I said Part III is one of the weakest. Visually its impressive but it just follows a villain of the week formula on a flimsy story.
Works a hell of a lot better animated though.
Part 3 is pretty much Araki fucking around and seeing how crazy he can get which is funny considering part 3 stands are basic as fuck.
gotta disagree on that point you mentioned. stardust crusaders is THE breakout moment of the jojo saga imo. hamon was basically an interpretation of how martial artists use chi and whatnot, stands are like extensions of the users’ soul.
why do you think araki abandoned the hamon idea and stuck with characters getting stands? it was such a cool dynamic and really let him go full out with his designs and character ideas. it might seem “old hat” nowadays but that sensibility and creativity has kept the series alive for both new and old fans. the “villain of the week formula” can be said for a lot of popular manga like dragonball z, yuyu hakusho and hunter x hunter to name a few, pretty standard stuff for this type of japanese media.
there is a sense of fun and a little bit of tongue-in-cheek that araki taps into musical influences for character and stand names as he is very fond of rock music. there’s a lot more hardcore jojo fans out there but you gotta respect the mind of an artist like araki for trying to stand out in a sea of manga/anime that can be so “formulaic” most of the time.
That really doesn’t counter his comment about Stardust Crusaders merit in comparison to the rest of the series.
Honestly, imo, Stardust Crusaders is extremely weak, especially compared to the story that came right before it, compared to Battle Tendency Stardust Crusaders is incredibly weak and plodding. It’s got awesome ideas, and it’s still a good book, but it’s format and pacing isn’t very good at all when compared to other books in the series.
You seem to misunderstand. III is where he got the formula down for his future arcs, Stands and how his world will interact from then on. From a historical perspective it stands out for influencing his later work.
That said III is still very weak, with a slapped on story that has little direction. We need to save the princess gang, and Dio is sending one assassin at a time to deal with us for…reasons.
Simply because this is where Araki started to find out where he wanted to go doesn’t excuse how weak of an entry it is. Compare it to later Stand arcs and it pales in comparison.
Just everyone has a hard on for III because that is when his work took off commercially and had a ton of media centered around it. Taking off the rose tinted glasses and examining it you find holes.
IV in comparison is a more light hearted and zany venture for the majority of the run, but gets hella serious and has a genuine creepy villain and a lot of small, intersected stories in one solid location. He makes that world come alive and establishes more of a meaning in the long run while harkening back to III in a meaningful way.
alright, let’s agree to disagree then. i get your point that it’s not as layered plot-wise as his subsequent works but for all intents and purposes, araki had to start off with a simple base to start from; testing the waters in a sense.
he had plenty of room to build upon the mythos on later chapters but for me, the mere fact that the stands add some mystery and a “superhero feel” to stardust crusaders means that he had the foundations in place. he needed to wrap up the chapter so not a lot of exposition was done for all of the characters to fully flesh them out, save for old joestar.
i’ll leave it at that then. as i said, i’m not too hardcore but still a fan of jojo otherwise.
Hope you’re not getting the feeling that we don’t like Stardust Crusaders, cuz we do, and for a lot of the reasons you listed. It’s really a good book.
I like it better in the new animated form than anything else. Its a good arc to turn your brain off and see Polnareff and Jotaro compete on who can take out the most jobbers.
Of all the characters Polnareff got substantial changes as III rolled on, him and Hol Horse continually evolved and showed nice facets to their personality.
Polnareff is the real star of III.
i don’t think ill of anything about the discussion, this is srk as we all know. the potential of the characters weren’t fully explored as i mentioned since the series did have to end somehow; araki was much younger back then and he’s not necessarily the shakespeare of japanese manga.
same sentiments with the recent animated series by david productions. season 1 was spectacular as they were able to fit in most of the important beats from phantom blood and battle tendency plus the animation was top tier for me.
stardust crusaders is almost done and i must say that i thas been superb. ayo?! is right about pol and hol able to actually evolve across the series. funnily enough, the rest of the cast don’t get as much exposition or development until the second half of the season they have dubbed the “egypt arc”. oh, well… they can make up for it with diamond is unbreakable next time.
Good new for my American JoJoBros http://fanboynation.com/jojos-bizarre-adventure/
