Makes me wish I didn’t post my impressions on the ending.

[details=Spoiler] It’s funny how you mention that it was a fated showdown between Dio and Johnny at the end. I felt that it was tacked on to preserve that Dio is and will always be a pretty big player in any JoJo universe. I felt it was a neat trick to tie into Valentine doing whatever he could to preserve that America would be safe in the coming decades and utilizing the old adage “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” entrusting alternate Diego to try and defeat Johnny. It’s was a nice little spice for Valentine last ditch effort being to entrust Dio a person who tried to kill for the corpse parts and disliked Johnny as much as he had in that moment to be the savior, the last resort to not just secure the future prospects of america but to undermine Johnnys efforts.*

*With that being said I really liked that Dio won. In the grand scheme of things while yes Johnny was after the corpse parts the entire manga, his real purpose was trying to walk. Not just physically but spiritually as a character, as a person. He goes from a fuck up, to a rich jerk, to a physically impaired person outcasted by his family and society in the beginning of the story. Experiencing loss after loss and becoming a bitter person because of these experiences yet he still has hope, a dedication to improve himself. His losing to Dio was his final trial of character it was to display just how much he grown from the person we’re introduced to into the person he became. *

*By losing to Dio (just like Johnathan ultimately lost to Dio in the main universe) he is given a chance to show how he handles loss after the experience and guidance he gained from his journey with Gyro. Before whereas Johnny would have blamed himself for Gyros death (who had grown to become like a surrogate brother) because of his inability to help him from dying instead he uses everything he learned from Gyro to continue fighting on. Whereas before Johnny would have caved into Valentines “deal” to bring everyones alternate self back to life because of his severe grievance and wanting everything to be “right” again he refutes the deal. Where before him losing to Dio and subsequently losing the corpse parts, not coming in the the top 5 of the race and being left for dead would have wrecked him emotionally and mentally he stands tall, strong and proud in the end. In showing him experiencing all of these things and STILL finishing the race (coming in as one of the last people to finish), returning Gyros body and using Gyros laugh we see a character who has grown and is now able to stand on his own without a wheelchair and without the emotional crutch that Gyro was for him. *

*I agree that I wish Araki said more about the time Johnny spent with the Zeppeli family and whatnot but even then I got a minimalistic feeling from it. The kid dies (as everyone must do someday), the zeppeli family escapes the king being overthrown and moves and Johnny gets married. In the end life goes on. Just like Johnny moves on from his experiences at the Steel Ball Run race so do does everyone elses life continues. Even though it’s a manga where we have these super powered beings fighting each other for scattered remains of Jesus Christ we get a simplistic and understated ending of “and the world turns”. *

*Pocoloco who I really wanted to see more of was unfortunately just used as a plot device to push the idea of a “luck based stand” to the reader. It’s why Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap: Love train was able to come off as not so farfetched even in the world of JoJo: Chekovs gun in the form of a Luck altering stand. Heck I would have loved to see more stuff gone into detail with Lucy and Stephen Steel after the race or the “terroists” that Oyecomova belonged to that ultimately overthrew the king but even I have to just accept it. Steel Ball Run

[details=Spoiler]I wouldn’t consider Dio in SBR as just being tacked in there to preserve his role in the Jojo universe. I won’t deny that fan service plays a part in his role as an antagonist to Johnny, especially when he returns with ‘The World’. However, he also plays a vital role in Johnny’s character development, as well as one of the key players in advancing the plot. It wasn’t necessary to call him Dio but Jojo but it doesn’t change the fact that the character was vital to Johnny’s development throughout the story.

There’s something to be said for his loss since that corpse signified the culmination of his journey both physically and spiritually. I feel that if more time was spent flushing out the skimmed over details in the ending I would have been much more satisfied with the end results. There’s different ways to interpret the events of the final volume but I don’t want to dwell on it too much. I think there’s truth within your comments; however, I can’t fully agree with him just like how you can’t agree with mine.[/details]

[details=Spoiler] *Good ole SRK ate my original post so I’ll try to condense what I originally typed.

Diego was absolutely crucial to Johnnies developement in the story. He was analogous to Johnny in respects to their pernicious relations with their fathers and their natural talent for horses. Diego served as a constant remainder to Johnny of what he could have been and Diegos well mannered decorum provides further tension between the two. Alternate Dio on the other hand I think had more in common with “regular universe” dio in being a bastard. While I enjoyed the final showdown between the two I didn’t much thematic subtext out of using that representation of Dio from my interpretation. *

While yes we disagree and agree on certain things about the ending I think it’s a good barometer of how good SBR was. Not just as a piece of entertainment but as a artform.[/details]

Jojolion connection to SBR

[details=Spoiler] *JoJolions connection with SBR were just reaffirmed in the latest chapter since it clearly depicted the family trees going back to Johnny Joestars marriage to Higashikatas daughter. Also there is one MAJOR plot point that haven’t been explained yet that hugely effects both stories. HOW THE FUCK DID HIGASHIKTA SURVIVE THIS?**Seriously not only did he survive he finished the SBR race in 2nd place and we seen him looking fit like a bull in the final pages of SBR.Sure it’s possible that he survived Sandmans stabbing but he sure as hell shouldn’t have been in good enough condition to not get disqualified from the race AND finish the race. *

*It brings into question what was his stand (if he had one which knowing JoJos he probably did) and what significance does Johnnies marriage to his daughter play in shaping the family schism between the Higashikatas and Kujos. *

*Also this is a little on the ancedotal side but Araki explained that the “lion” part of the “Jojolion” name is in reference to the christian believes of blessings and the gospels. It’s also a reference to the old greek myth of Pygmalion. Also, I’ve been holding out on watching the anime since episode 11 because I’m gonna wait until I’ve got a handful of eps to watch back-to-back. In the meantime, is there a good place to read the JoJo manga? I’m still way behind in the story and I’d like to catch up. The site I used to read it at started acting weird and there was this other manga site that had the chapters WAY out of order. So if anyone can help me get my JoJo manga fix, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Ceaser’s fabulous self is finally introduced…and he shows it in spades this episode; also reminding me how Joesph and their hostility towards each other gave us some funny moments. While his voice actor is a newcomer, he got the character downpat.

The rest of the Pillar Men look great too. Masters have been awakened and all that; though I’m pretty excited to see the hamon duo’s first confrontation with Wham.

Also, RIP Mark. :sad:
