This is probably understood already by anyone that’s played, but i thought it was worth noting after i played this morning before work:
You can whiff cancel normal strings (ABC) but not auto combos (AAA), which will just give you A/2A.
Each has obvious advantages/disadvantages
2A5B for mohammed, for example, gives me a OS that includes his anti-air 5B in case they jump. Meanwhile, 2A5A gives me the exact same string for the exact same damage, and is more useful for counterpoking at it’s max range or maybe even whiff 2A > Tick throw.
Not in front of the game right now, but will test when i get home: does this mean I can also use auto combos to make B/C’s not whiff cancelable? If so, that means I could walk around and do 5B/2B and press A afterwards, if it hits, i auto combo, if it dosen’t I don’t do anything. That’s actually a pretty cool use of auto combo, I think, if it ends up being true. The only reason I think this will work is because you can cancel auto combos into anything you want, you’re not constrained to the built in special move.
I saw Pete messing with Valentine on his stream a little but not much else. Cars I’ve seen nothing at all.
Here’s some Hol Horse combos, and apparently puttstuning the glass throw and whiffing your combo ender makes Hanged Man stay out? That’s kind of awesome for him.
Damnit, Pete was streaming? I was wondering where he was this whole time I forgot he had a stream. I was really interested of he got a hold of the game and what his thoughts were if he did.
he archived it all! but it looks like he left his headset at a friend’s house (according to his blog) so we won’t hear him on his stream until he gets that back
So, I gotta be honest. If you had told me that Rohan and Akira were grapplers (or that even had command grabs) I wouldn’t have believed you.
They both also seem kind of bad. I had no idea that the safety look moves (where he draws Heaven’s Door) were his NORMALS in Stand Off. And that he can’t cancel any of them. His command grab in Stand On would be good if it didn’t have all the start up in the world. Rohan is one hundred percent about his locks, which is fine but his damage is so damn low and his options are so limited (really, the startup on the command grab in stand on is just… way… waay too long.) that I just can’t see him being viable at all. I’d like to be wrong though because I love his gimmick.
Akira’s command grab is kind of scary because he can combo into Level 1 from it, but bleh, keeping RHCP charged is a pain in the ass. I dunno if I have that kind of patience, he’s another character that seems low damage kind of for no reason. I would have thought that having the ‘mini-game’ of keeping RHCP charged meant that if you over charged you’d have fucking terrifying damage, but that’s not the case (from what I can see.)
Hermes is really good and thus far the only character I could get more damage on Stand Off then I could Stand on. I think I’ll spend more time with her, haha.
Still give him a try, but accept that you’re tradeing damage for your ability to lock your opponent’s buttons. You still have to guess right a LOT. It’s weird, he also has a command grab in stand off and that actually is really fast and viable, but it does very little for him damage or option wise since it’s in Stand Off.
He has a DP in stand off, I didn’t test if it had invincibility.
SPEAKING OF WHICH, Leebee, there’s definitely reversals in this game. The wakeup timing is hella weird but it’s there. I tested Avdol’s shoryu v. Joesph doing his Rekka on wakeup (first thing I thought of that would have a super active hitbox) and I either outright beat it every time or I would invincibile through the first few swings and shoryu would clash with the end and neither of us would hit. lol.
His stand-off command grab seals their style, so how much you get from it is probably matchup dependent. Sealing Light Mode or King Crimson is probably way more useful than sealing Joseph’s ripple.
