Will never hate anyone that I have either:
A:Never met
B:Royally fucked a collective.
I hate chimps, that ought to get me at least 80% credit.
At this rate I think it’s best if The Answer just responds to these claims. The stream archive is clear enough to me, and I see no reason why he would lie about it. However, it’s probably best if he reiterates it here himself, but it’s up to you to believe him.
So far it seems like no one has done a day by day So here it is from what I personally saw. Anything quoted from other people is gonna be anonymous, unless they feel like throwing out otherwise.
Day 1: I got to the venue at 10 a.m. I was able to get my tourney and press badge no problem but I was told the fire marshal had said they weren’t safe enough to have anyone exceeding staff until after 6 p.m. Even NOS had been told to leave since they wanted to set up a dance floor. With nothing to do and some time to kill I walked around the area. It seemed that the venue was picked for it’s low price rather than with the player in mind. There was simply nothing there for a gamer. So finally six rolls around and everyone gets let in. Many of the vendor booths weren’t set up despite the extra time. I had one tourney that day that had been pushed back to Saturday without anyone being told. While I was playing casuals I heard the initial announcement that the SFxT pot was being lowered and that everyone would get a $10 refund. With the machines being taken up by the pools for SFxT and nothing else to do, I headed home
Day 2: Again I went to the tourney early expecting either pools or casuals. The Tournament Legacy facebook page had said that the tourneys would start at 11. After I checked in I was told not by the staff but by another player that nothing started until 2. I talked to some of the vendors, who had to raise their prices in order to make the “venue fee”. That seemed off to me but I still managed to afford a few things. After that the SSF4AE tourney started. They had to blare everyone’s name over the speaker because until ten minutes before most of the players hadn’t known the tourney was happening. Several entrants were calling their friends yelling “Get down here now, they just randomly started AE!” The guy I was supposed to play against didn’t show, and they had decided to DQ him but not tell me while I sat by taking up a machine. My next match was against Flash Metroid, who was also running late. The brackets showed that I’d be his first match. They gave him an extra 15 minutes over the other player who had been DQ’d. Obviously I got blown up like TNT. I was salty, but then the Assist ME crew came by. There was alot of questions like “where are we supposed to be set-up” and “do we have a room for the Q & A panel”? Maximillian was having a had time finding John Nelson to ask when he should do the panel. After someone found JN, Max tried to announce the panel over the DJ booth that NOS had made. No one heard him so he started answering the questions that anyone that came by asked, while trying to sell some t-shirts and give away some pins. Things seemed well while the crew was signing things and posing for pictures until JN came by and whispered into Max’s ear. Apparently the commentary that Max was going to do went from 2 hours to 4 hours. Many of the Assist Me crew were annoyed by this development. I didn’t have time to sulk with them though, as the Marvel tournament was going to start.
That is until I went to the guy in charge of pools who said he didn’t know when he’d start and to ask “an asian man wearing a backpack” for the details. After looking for someone matching the broad description I found a guy setting up the skullgirls tourney. He had said that UMVC3 would start at 3 p.m at the AE consoles. So I go back at 3, and get told 4. While I was sitting down the asian guy from earlier asked if I liked skullgirls. I said that I did and had even entered to play to which he replied “oh well you better go over there it’s starting in 5 minutes”. As I rushed over to the starting point I was told to wait as the other players hadn’t shown up. Mr. Backpack came back saying to wait 5 minutes while he tries to round up players for the tourney. I don’t know if these guys had to pay for the tourney, as for most of them he simply asked “hey are you bored?” So after I lost that tourney I went over to the AE set up to get my mustache curley. I got told that UMVC3 was going to be at 5 p.m and that it was like that the entire day.
The CoD tourney was getting underway and I went to go check on my friend who was playing. He told me that no one knew what perks or weapons were banned, but they had been told there was a list somewhere that said the rules. My friend and his team manged to win two matches until the list was found. It was then that him and several other teams were banned. Finally it was time for my tourney to start. I get my opponent and start to play. After two matches he shakes my hand and gets up when a referee says it’s 3 out of 5. Then another ref comes over and said it was best of 3. They argue while me and my opponent decide to just play to 5 as he had felt like we hadn’t best because there was a large speaker blaring out players names. After acquiring some headphones along with some Ipods(the tvs headphone jack was broken(on multiple sets as well). During and after the UMVC3 tourney I heard multiple people talking about how the announcements were screwing up their combos. After hearing the guy yell out player’s names for a half hour, I decided to go home.
Day 3: Finally on the last day. There were only 20 people at the venue at 1 p.m. Many pro players were waiting around and not much else. No one seemed to know what time which finals were going to start. While I had fun rubbing elbows with some of the best players, none of them seemed to enjoy their experience. While no direct quotes, I was told that if there had been in my position they would’ve asked for a refund. A finals schedule was finally put out, and the tourneys all ran late. The worst offender was the UMVC3 finals, which started 3 hours late. many players would come in, complain about there being no casuals, and leave. As the audience was all pros, none of them were making side bets. After seeing virtually no hype during the AE finals, I decided to go home just as the UMVC3 finals started.
So take that for what you will. In my personal opinion this was a poorly organized tournament. The prize pot shouldn’t have been guaranteed because it was far from it. Likewise although most tournaments never start on time, the sheer amount of confusion made it hard to play for players like myself who like to mentally prepare before a match. I will not go back to Revelations based only upon this last weekend and the drama it created
If people do get paid out, as far as I see it you should at least see that aspect of Tournament Legacy as legit. Not saying you should trust whatever they do 100%, but there’s always room for improvement. This year had issues, but ReveLAtions is not the only tournament to have problems. The venue can be changed, the brackets could be run better (although I think a lot of issues with the brackets were caused by lack of advertising on major fighting game websites like SRK, who refuse to post anything about TL events), setups can be ironed out, these are all things that can be fixed. I said it once and I’ll say it again, it really looked to me like Tournament Legacy was trying to do good by the community and do things right. If they keep it up and iron out the problems they had they could end up with a really incredible event.
TL is not perfect, they have made some big mistakes, but I don’t think any mistake they made this year could be seen as big. It was a lot of small mistakes that people blew out of proportion and were caused by silly mistakes that look like signs of inexperience, which shouldn’t be a deal breaker. If Tournament Legacy pays out for Rev2012 and decides to keep doing fighting game events in the future, I would say trust that they’re legit and you’re not going to get screwed, but you could probably question how things are ran. I don’t think we should run John Nelson out of the community just yet, he’s trying to do the right thing even if others don’t see it that way, but running him out if he pays what he says he will hurts the community more than it helps. Hell, the fact that they made sure they picked a date that wasn’t already used for a different event shows that they’re trying, more events with more money helps players and the community. I think instead of trying to demonize John Nelson and Tournament Legacy, we should instead be offering advice on how to make their events better so they have less issues and we have more events.
I am not and never will be upset over attending either ReveLAtions 2011 or 2012, I had a great time at both events and met some great people I don’t think I’ll ever forget. Whether it was creating the SoCal Pokemon Type Wild community in 2011 with players like RaYzYrbYrn even if he did hate the game or meeting the amazing AZ guys like Haz and Frank this year, ReveLAtions has been an event to remember for me. And to everyone who decided to use this event as an opportunity to jump on the hate train while it was fresh to get attention (I’m not even going to bother saying names, you know who you are), you people are poison to this community and the reason why there’s trouble with growth in the FGC. John Nelson might not be the best guy ever, but he’s certainly not the criminal you make him out to be. He’s made mistakes, but every year he tries to get better. If you hate him, that’s fine, if you don’t want to go to his events, that’s fine too, but that doesn’t make the events he runs bad and we could all be trying to help him make his events better.
All that’s left to see is whether or not he pays out. If I’m wrong and he doesn’t pay out then I’ll own up to it and take back everything I said, but to automatically assume the worst because you don’t like him is a shitty thing to do.
What’s the minimum accepted standard for a tournament that “runs well”? It should be organized, on-schedule or close to as possible, and equipment should be verified as running and ready** BEFORE** the event starts; unpredictable things happen, so in addition to the previous conditions, the TO should try to plan and be ready for what could and most likely will go wrong. Based on the last dozen-odd pages, there were a few logistical and timetable problems at the event, and so little preparation made that someone responsible for the event stream was tasked with coming up with a solution to a problem not related to the stream. With all of the recent and past problems with the ReveLAtions tournaments, it’s difficult to believe that financial concerns will be better managed than the logistical and operational problems.
Those are the problems: mismanagement and a lack of confidence. If someone can’t keep track of time and personnel and equipment, what guarantee is there that he’ll mail out checks or electronically transfer funds on time? One side of the house running well doesn’t excuse another side of the house going up in flames.
you don’t see what the thread turned to? this is a complete whinefest about the top players not “warning” them and which deceived other people.
I just wanted to jump in here to mention that the MK9 portion of the tournament was run AMAZINGLY by Epic Gamer Productions.
They brought like 8 setups, all the right equipment, and even a mini PA system to call matches.
Because of EGP the MK9 tournament was a really good experience, except for the fact that the revelations ustream has no archive =[
Huge shoutouts to all of the independent parties that ran their sections well (like team hazmat for example.)
A good tournament isn’t just one that pays you at the end of the day. C’mon now. Is this community so focused on money that they literally see green and nothing else?
Only top players like F Champ (because he openly states it loudly and clearly more than any other top players). And oh… Jago “It’s all about da paypah~!”
It’s really not hard to schedule when every pool of each game is going to start, and communicate this to players in advance and on-site, it just takes a brain and a staff. If the scene is ever going to evolve people are going to have to stop making excuses for this not happening at some events. I’m surprised that by now that the majority of players spending the money to attend tournaments don’t demand it from every big event.
I can’t tell if you’re being serious or just trolling. If you’ve been keeping up with this topic, there are testimonies from MANY members that say otherwise. John Nelson has screwed over many people so get off his dick.

UltraChen covered this topic, and they cover some good points in regards to tournament sponsors:
The whole archive is a good listen, but that timestamp is one thing I don’t think has been covered here.
The people getting prize money are a very small percentage. Saying the tourney/JN is all good as long as winners get paid is a bit ridiculous, especially with what the guy above you is saying.
Yes
then you get the same baddies who whine that they can’t win any money and in the same sentence wish that they were better. Didn’t know you needed money as that motivator but whatever helps you makes your links crispier I guess.
How much did John claim he was gonna pay you to say all of that. I’ve been following everything about TL since day one as I like to research everything pretty much when it comes to organizing events so I can learn from other people’s mistakes, but to give a guy who’s been a repeat offender the “benefit of the doubt” is about as dumb as offering a suicide bomber another chance at life. The guy has burned so many bridges with sponsors and advertisers that He’s already run out of options to find people to work for or with him. I know Revelations was great last year because he happened to hire people with initiative like the LevelUp Crew that wouldn’t lower their standards for nobody. Ask them if they ever got paid for all their hard work.
If you read this John Nelson, I know deep down you’re not out to steal money(cause you’re sure as hell not making any from these events) but try something else in life. You given a bad name to organizers across the world. I’d have an ounce of respect for you if for once in your TOing in the FGC life if you’d just apologize for never being forthright with people.
Everyone’s spoken their piece about the situation. The only saving grace of the event is that as usual the players get to be around their friends. I know if I was in a crap hole I’d still make the best of it with the people I’m around. Thanks everyone for sharing their experiences good and bad. Also I wouldn’t blame the top players that supported the event, but now that they know how the majority has been treated they won’t make the same mistake twice hopefully.
Here are some thoughts from one of the Shadowloo organizers after FChamp dragged Shadowloo’s name in the mud.

After all the help the Australian organizers gave to FChamp, was it really necessary for him to drag Shadowloo Showdown’s name in the mud?
FChamp was praising Revelations as a good tournament and actively told his stream viewers and twitter followers to sign up, regardless of all the corruption going on with Tournament Legacy. Yet he has no qualms about dragging Shadowloo’s name in the mud, a real honest tournament that treated FChamp extremely well, in order to make Revelations seem less bad and bullshit himself out of trouble for promoting Revelations.
Is money more important to FChamp than a whole community of people doing their best to fly in international players + treating them well? This is very ungrateful behavior from FChamp. Nice way for FChamp to show his support for the community, I’m sure his fans on this thread would approve.
Almost as dumb as assuming we’re not going to get paid when he’s repeatedly paid in the past right? But no… KOF players were HEROES cuz they walked away from 3k (which is a lot of peso’s) because they were afraid they wouldn’t get paid which is an unfounded belief based on the empircal experiences of their friends, some of themselves, and various other top players at his previous events.
I don’t think he’s ran out of options to find people to work with if he can still guarantee $50,000 with a terrible turnout. I feel like the crux of this is, of course, if we get paid or not. Its sad cuz I would have looked forward to this check, but thanks to the Jedi Rob situation and all of this nonsense going on, I"m now skeptical of whether or not I will get a check. What will everyone say, if we do indeed get paid though? Revelations was great last year. SCR was great last year, but we should all focus on the FIRST tournament that failed, because from a players perspective, this tournament was still good. The setups were fine, the competition was great, the scheduling was horrible. Welcome to pretty much every tourney in the FGC.
I can only speak for myself, but I’m pretty sure, if we all get paid, we won’t feel like we’ve made a mistake at all. The majority haven’t been treated poorly in any way. I’m pretty sure all of the negative are not directly related to EASILY 98% of the community. Not liking a venue (even though the venue was HORRIBLE) doesn’t mean “I’m not going back next year.” Cuz I can speak for most when I say the venue for NCR this year was AWFUL, but I’d go back to the next one because the tournament was great…And I didn’t make a dime at that tournament.
