I’m not from Socal, but this entire mess with John Nelson at the helm has gotta come to a head. If you’re unhappy with Justin, FChamp, and Ricky Ortiz promoting the shit out of it … don’t tell them, as they’ll ignore it. Let their sponsors and teams know how you feel about it. Flood their Facebook and Twitter with complaints, don’t go to their events, and expose this fraud everywhere so he has nowhere to hide.
From the sounds of it it seems the payouts for AE and Marvel also went smoothly. Thank goodness because if that didn’t work out…
of course it had to, having guys like FChamp, Justin, and Ricky turn on you would effectively turn everyone on you.
Well it’s over now, and there’s no point complaining about Nelson, the top players, and the sponsors anymore whether he is in the right or the wrong. His reputation has basically plummeted to hell and im sure he’s going to go through a lot of shit trying to throw other tournaments and stuff.
Honestly I just feel sorry for he KOF people, especially the ones that came from Mexico and stuff. They basically spent their money to come here and… just leave

I am only on 4 page of this thread so if this has been mentioned… i am sorry.
So I get to the tournament on Friday to play in the SF x TK tournament. About 10 minutes before pools start, the guy running the tournament comes to the players and makes an announcement that the pot bonus is going to go from $5,000 to $500 due to lack of interest in the game. As you can imagine, the players that came to participate in that game wasn’t feeling that decision and demanded to speak to John Nelson. JN gave a long speech on why the pot was decreased but it didnt matter. I went back and forth with him that I basically don’t care. When I registered your tournament, I did so under the rules and understanding that were reported on the website at the time i registered.
After about 20-30mins of back and forth, JN finally said. “All you guys figure out what you want to do and we will make it happen” (or something like that). I basically being Landosious said “We want the pot $5k”. Everyone nodded their head and JN agreed to this.
Now, fast forward to finals Sunday, I had already went back to NorCal and have no idea if the top 8 for this game got paid the 5k bonus but Friday Evening, JN said that it was back.
I know Champ got paid at SCR and im assuming these guys will get paid for SFxTK, AE, UMvC3 - but the whole pot decrease pot thing was very discouraging. Especially 15 minutes before pool play. In the end it sounded like JN made up for the mistake. We will see

yup at this point i’m just waiting for monday/tuesday when everyone else at revelations sees this and if/when TL responds
but good stuff sticking up for SFxT! hopefully disaster averted, although of course there will be the obvious association with “oh KoF cancelled so now he has extra money to make up the missing 4500” etc.
Is it known how the players are being paid yet? The outcome might not be known right away.
And screw the association, KOF being cancelled is completely unacceptable, this should already be more than enough for any sane person to blacklist this dude when he has a track record.
i personally don’t have confirmation if anyone in any game has been paid yet, i’m just assuming
which is why i’m waiting for the next couple of days… it would be weird not to have heard any confirmation by then
i wouldn’t be surprised if we hear “well i told them i’d have 3k by sunday, they decided to cancel” in response to KoF, but yeah either way that was a disaster in itself that shouldn’t be ignored
so I’ve just been a lurker and stream monster for forever it seems; never been to a tournament (not very good, don’t have a stick and just nervous to go i guess), but i just wanted to say that i think it’s really cool that more than anything, you just want people to have a good time and enjoy being a part of the fgc. just wanted to say i respect that and props to you man; you stopped at least 1 monster from watching this weekend.
I usually don’t post but felt compelled to tonight. Anyways, Lando mentioned that the SFxT pot was increased back to 5k. Was this before or after the KoF players walked out? Maybe JN was able to pay the full pot since there was no longer a KoF tourney to pay out. Either way, dropping the pot from 5k to 500 in the first place seems pretty shady to me.
thanks man. like i said although i’m a bit upset that john nelson allegedly tried to hinder a previous tournament i ran, i’m not exactly trying to hang the guy as a witch or whatever. if it turns out i’m wrong, that’s fine. but this has been going on for several years so it’s about time we either get answers, or say screw it gtfo
and really, unless we somehow become starcraft 2, we’re mostly in it for the fun anyways =)
I’ll keep it real… I didn’t know anything bout KOF at the time… and I can not confirm if it was before or after. I am only reporting that it seemed shady to decrease the pot but in the end he made it right… Lets see if the players got paid the bonus and where the money came from, I have no clue.

“It was a really good tournament from a MK perspective. The rest of the venue was rather bleak. If you’re in to Capcom fighters, yea you’d probably be disappointed. MK can be played in Shang Tsung’s dungeon (Huntington Park Arcade anyone?) and still come off smooth. As long as Tournament Legacy comes through with the payouts I’ll give this event a thumbs up. Venue was ace, and with EGP Compton running the pools, what more could an MK enthusiast ask for?”

This is a tough situation and RedRapper has a point in saying that it’s difficult to be a whistle blower. Without the absolutely correct information on all the little details of Revelations 2011, it was worth waiting until something actually happened in order to get pissed. I openly discouraged people from attending, but I had no intention to publicly shame John Nelsons for a tournament that didn’t happen yet. Rev 2011 was a bad situation, and they deserved to be called out on it… but it was last year. I don’t want to be malicious, and personally I would have like to at least seen this event run properly as opposed to this happening again and saying “I told you so.” Wishing for people to get screwed over so we can ban a TO / creating a witch hunt for someone who made some huge fuck ups in 2011 and came completely clean with this tournament would have just been horrible to do. How fucking stupid and childish would we have looked if that was the case? We all had our opinions on the event, and there were a LOT of them, but I don’t think anyone waited to make a thread AFTER the fact just to screw people over. Someone even called me “petty” for dwelling on the events of 2011 over twitter after telling people not to go. Keep in mind this person KNEW a lot of what happened. Not everyone wanted to listen. I really, really hope everyone got paid and everything has been made right. Then we can just attribute it all to being a shitty event in general, and move on.
I guess my point is: I think it’s unfair we try to implicate Justin, Champ, Max, Team Hazmat, etc. etc. as being part of the problem as they might not legitimately known what was going on. I’d like to think a lot of them just wanted to do what they do: Attend and contribute to a SoCal FGC event. Just because they’re part of the event doesn’t mean that they had any involvement in conning people. -_- There is one repeating problem with this year and last year: Tournament Legacy, and more specifically John Nelson. That’s what’s important here. Level Up disbanded all ties with TL after the event happened, and everyone else who had any idea of the bullshit that happened stayed as far away as they could.
In all honesty, with the amount of complaints lodged about the way that TL ran the event last year that were posted on SRK, I really thought the majority of people would have completely disregarded this tournament and move on. I didn’t even think people would show up enough to make it worthy of being a weekly.
Lets just make sure we do our part to make sure this man never runs a tournament within our community again. Hopefully, not in ANY gaming community.
Before anyone even TRIES to say anything about putting EGP and TL on the same page by warping this quote: EGP Compton is a stand up gentlemen who runs amazing events here in SoCal, for the community. Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed. He especially supports MK9 and you can bet your ass EGP is the sole reason why MK9 would be amazing at this event. No sarcasm at all.
Here’s to hoping the MK guys got paid. But SSN’s?
