You’d think that, but you’d be wrong :looney:
It was really disappointing, eyeball already mentioned that 30% of the venue was not used that the FPSers just sat and chilled in. I was up early to play Persona around 11 and they had about 6 unused setups. Around this time they said they were waiting for copies of the game, I don’t understand how you run a video game tournament and not have games. There were only 4 setups for that tournament. Brawl and Melee and the shooters even sports games had a good amount of setups. Tournament started around 2-3. Later in the day the didn’t regulate badges at all, people just kept walking in while many gamers (every game) were already upset about the delay In the morning (schedule said warm ups at 8AM.) I did play and meet many cool people from the FGC but it’s a shame that it had to be at a place like this
Dude, there’s no reason to insult them like that. Like I said before, there are things the OP is complaining about that other community tournaments have done this year. If you’re a top player and are competing for THOUSANDS of dollars more than other events (that you still go to) offer, are you going to complain that the TO screwed KOF? Prob not. Don’t hate on the guys trying to make a living off of the games they love to compete in, it’s not their job either to tell you what tournaments to support.
they’ll be so hurt
Justin, Combo, Filipino “MORON” Champ, Maximilian, PR Rog and others… Some knew, some others didn’t, life goes on…
I’m sorry, I really wasn’t trying to insult them.
I guess I’m more disappointed in the fact that so many of people/friends warned everyone in the FGC about this tournament, yet they still decide to go. I mean, I respect FChamp and Justin for trying very hard to do what they love, but I think they really should have boycotted this tournament. Both of them are top representatives/faces of the FGC and for them to do something like this sends mixed messages to outsiders and newcomers since it’s clear that many people have been hurt by John Nelson.
I don’t feel like I’m at liberty to discuss specifics, and I’d like to see it directly from Justin/Champ, so I won’t go into any specifics.
I heard a reason from a source I trust deeply (they want to stay out of this so I will keep them anonymous but if you heard their name you’d all probably trust them immediately too) that Justin had a reason for promoting Revelations. And that reason was not at all related to him believing in TL, Nelson, Revelations, the pot, whatever. I’d assume Champ had a similar reason, but hey maybe he was sincere about his praise for Nelson. /shrug who knows.
That’s all I’ll say for now. Again, hopefully Jebailey’s prediction turns true and we hear from the top players at Rev themselves after this weekend.
The point is that Fchamp and Jwong were advertising this tournament by retweeting TL and tweeting a lot about the tournament.
They could have gone, won their (possibly dirty) money, and come out as respectable people. Unfortunately they directly supported a clearly carcinogenic individual for their money
Most people did, in the form of not attending. Honestly, while there is no proof that anyone is being paid to promote these guys, it would be Fchamp and Justin. Fchamp has been talking shit about Persona on stream just to deter stream monsters from making him learn a new game. These guys have alot of incentive to promote Capcom games at all costs.
Don’t start breaking out pitchforks for Justin and Champ. They’re two of the coolest people I’ve met in this community, and it’s not like they feel any allegiance to JN in any way. If the money isn’t there at the end of the day, they’re going to call people the fuck out about it. Straight up, the person who deserves blame here is John Nelson and Tournament Legacy.
BTW, the interview will be up soon. Just got it ready.
I read this thread just before I fell asleep…
I dreamt I went to Revelations. I’d won the Marvel tournament, and was sitting in a restaurant, counting my winnings. They were in coupons. About $130 canadian dollars. I started thinking… 130 CAD? For coming first?!? Initially I felt like I had been cheated, but got distracted by having some very large canadian 2 dollar coins though, they were in two parts with ring of gold on the outside and a silver middle. I discovered you could pop the middle out and was happy thinking you could use the outer ring to cut cookie dough. Then my thoughts turns to the tournament as I needed to pay for me meal. Part of me was happy because a tournament had just been won by Thor, and I could get some exposure for him on SRK. But then I felt disgust with myself because I knew the tournament was shady but I still went and participated. I felt like a hypocrite. A friend told me I was overreacting, but I waved the coupon in their face and said 'No man, I’ve got the KOF people’s money that ain’t right! I’m gonna send them some of this"
I am serious, this is what I just dreamt. I’ve been awake for 3 mins so I’m making a record of this.
Them retweeting TL made it look like a trustworthy event. And them retweeting TL makes them look like untrustworthy people.
Well of course if YOU say so than I guess that invalidates all arguments! Lets just tangentially blame everyone!
HEY! MAX’S DOG SUPPORTS TL! CLEAR SHADYNESS!
Use your energy on John Nelson. Don’t waste it other places.
its not unreasonable to ask for proof the of the pot, especially when people are putting his credibility on blast from one coast to the next. and what i heard from theanswer’s stream, and all of Nelson’s passive aggressive actions make it pretty clear where he stood in terms of KOF’s supposed pot bonus. and i know im hearing only one side of the story, but it’s not like anyone is giving a rebuttal proving them wrong. in fact it doesn’t help that he made you promise him to write something here instead of him trying to defend any of his actions.
As you have highlighted with your caps my energy/opinion doesn’t count anything, especially when measured directly against someone as John Nelson. The same goes for 90% of the FGC.
All I’m saying is that the influential people: ehubs or srk should have given a clear warning to the community. The next most influential sources are the top players: Jwong and fchamp are two of the most famous players in the scene. A tweet from them means a lot. In this case, in my mind and many others, it meant that a cool tournament was going down.
I believe that to stop this kind of things from happening it’s the influential people who need to put their effort informing the simple jacks like me. I definitely had no access to an interview showing how shady this guy John Nelson is…
I went to pretty much support the Persona 4 Arena scene. I’d heard rumors of how shitty a TO John Nelson was, but I never knew the details before tonight, to be honest. It was a blast being able to meet up with folks and play games. Also got to celebrate my friend’s birthday on the 3rd Street Promenade, so it wasn’t ALL bad. That said, I feel rather dirty supporting this man’s company, despite how much I want Persona to succeed, and I can safely say I won’t ever make this mistake again.
Also, shoutouts to shoe advertisements getting precedence over a BYOC section. I lugged around my PS3 for no reason.
Look I’m not trying to jump at you, I’m just saying ruling in absolutes gets you know where. Understanding context does. In this context, Jnel is the person whose spreading the bullshit. People like Max, Justin and Champ aren’t the ones stiffing pots and making promises they don’t keep.
Now i hate to fault champ and wong, especially max since i have so much respect in what he does for the fgc but as leaders I believe they have a responsibility to warn competitive and casual players of the bullshit nelson has pulled in the past and deter players from TL!
Citation needed, dude.
Justin went to CEO 2011 over Revelations 2011 at least in part to support the former event, despite the latter having much higher advertised payouts. No date conflict this year, so no harm in him showing up to see if he can make bank, especially when the guy lives in the area anyway. What does he owe to anyone?
Asking for better warnings and publications from big community outlets for potential pitfalls like this is a valid point (it’s what the “tournaments/venues to avoid” thread was made for, after all, as well as this one), but that isn’t any one player’s or subset of player’s responsibility.
The hell? This is exactly what you’re doing. J Wong and Champ are complicit in furthering a known untrustworthy for their own personal gains. There are degrees of responsibility to consider but you’re determined to single out Nelson (understandably), implying he’s absolutely at fault. FChamp and Wong clearly weren’t/aren’t voicing concern about the potential of KoF players losing time and money signing up for this event (for example).
You can say Champ and J Wong, despite being figureheads in the community, (i.e. btw - there were many others that openly supported the event) don’t owe anyone the benefit of being model citizens - but don’t go mentioning notions like “Fighting game community” in the same breath. That’s churlish. A group of people chiseling off each other’s backs isn’t a community. If we extend competition to our human relations in the circle, we’re all just a large set of stray cats.
