You hit the nail directly on the head with that post. Only fighting game I’m playing atm is SFIV which is why I used it as an example also. Well I tried it with SSF II HD Remix and failed bad with it aswell
Basically, if I practiced day in and day out with the LS-32 then I would get used to it no doubt about it, but I don’t have much time to play so its annoying when I go to do an ultra and a teleport comes out or a spinning pile driver and I end up dying
Just to hear another opinion on the Suzo inductives, I’d recommend steering clear of them. I had a bunch at one time and sold em all off. Mounting those sticks is quite annoying, and they require a steady 5v, otherwise the engage distances can change, i.e. don’t use a battery pack to power it. And above all the feel isn’t that great IMO. (Same for the Suzo STC) I’d much rather play on a JLF or LS 32.
And if anyone is concerned about throw distances with a JLF for shmups, you can mod those to give pretty much whatever engage/throw distance you want with a little scotch tape around the actuator (fat part for the engage distance, and thinner part for the throw). Also, a 30mm balltop can make the stick feel a lot more precise as well. I’d say stick with a seimistu or modded JLF, even an unmodded JLF is really good, people can 1cc just fine with those. You don’t always have to hit the edge of the gate to move a direction, you need to do little flicks to move single pixel distances in those kind of games.
Thank you very much for this post. It really helped me to lighten up. I had a couple of things I needed from AkihabaraShop so I ended up ordering a circle gate for my LS-32, an oversized and undersized balltop per this post, and some LS-55 springs to replace my Namco springs which are of various different tensions. I think my bigger issue is that my room is cluttered with sticks.
Can you fill me in what the LS-32 is like with that circle gate? Already having a JLF stick (and finding it hard to play SHMUPs with obviously) I’m also looking to build/mod a stick for a SHMUPs and my attention is mostly drawn to the LS-32 and LS-56. I’m seeing quite some contrasting experiences with this as some say it’s hard to tell the difference between a JLF and LS-32, going for the LS-56 and some others saying the LS-32 is perfect with the octo gate.
So yeah i’m curious about this circle gate setup you’re going to use.
Sure thing. After much obsession my shmup stick tier goes like this:
LS-40
LS-32
JLF w/LS-55 spring
Happ/iL Competition
Any one of these will provide a quality shmuping experience. The reason I give it to the LS-40 is because it has the shortest engage (smallest movements), a normal square gate unlike the LS-32, and a shaft cover as an added bonus.
I’ve got no real beef with the LS-32. I’m just saying given the choice I’d go for the LS-40. I had to mount mine with an LS-32 S plate. Keep that in mind if you order one. I liked the circle gate alright on the LS-32. I’m so used to square that I can’t help but miss it when I’m using the circle gate. The stock square gate of the LS-32 irks me. It’s square with little bulges in the corner. The LS-40 also doesn’t do the LS-32 grind which people complain about but it hasn’t bothered me. I haven’t encountered it during gameplay.
I would highly recommend adding an LS-55 spring to a JLF. It is something very inexpensive you can do to make a JLF a solid stick for shmups. It gives it a good deal more tension so it feels less sloppy. I can play equally as well on this stick as I can the others.
Hm good idea I haven’t heard anyone mention the LS40 before but if the LS-32 has an awkward gate different from what i’m used to and the LS-40 makes for a notable difference I might as well just try it.
I’m planning to fit it into one of the QFC Gaming blank boxes. These have 4 pre-drilled mounting holes for a sanwa JLF in it, I just noticed the S plate on the LS-32 is a bit larger so that’s probably why I want to get that?
Just on a sidenote for the sake of changing the dustwasher, it seems like the shaft+cover diameter of the LS-40 is a bit more than a bare LS-32 (which seems to be able to fit the same cover) so is it hard to just gently file and sand the inside of a seperate dustwasher intended for a LS-32 to fit the LS-40? Or is it closer to a HAPP sized dustwasher?
Many thanks for the info as i’m new to building ;).
EDIT scrap that last question, figured out you can use JLF-CD dustwasher
