Been thinking a lot about teams recently and I was wondering, how does Chris fare in the 2nd slot? I’d like to keep Joe up front for his start of the round options, Dante in the back for his assist, and I’m looking for a suitable beam assist for the middle that’s not Doom :\ Chris obviously works well with Jam Session, but does he have safe DHC options coming in?
Unfortunately he has no real safe dhc options, nor does he far well vs incoming mixups.
Back when I ran Chris second I generally had to dhc twice into Doom just to keep me safe.
Ah that’s too bad. I did hear about Chris’ alpha counter into combo with punches assist, but that’s not exactly what I’m lookin for. Gonna keep Frank in the middle for now, thanks for the reply
So, I will be running a Chris/?/Taskmaster shell. Spencer, Dante & Trish to fill in the question mark. Dante with Jam Session is very good. Trish with Peekaboo is unpredictable against the opponent. I feel more comfortable with Taskmaster being on my team so he isn’t going anywhere. Chris and Taskmaster alone have 1.1 million life so they can soak up damage pretty well compared to most characters. Time to experiment.
Lemme know if you wanna try and run some sets to play around with the team composition.
Retnuh66, wanna get on soon? I’m trying to play for a bit. Either XBL or PSN.
So guys, I’m thinking about picking up Chris but I’ve got some questions:
-
what assist is the single best assist for Chris? I’m assuming its either drones, vajra, or jam session…if you had to pick, which does the most for him overall?
-
how does Chris do vs:
Spencer
Nova
Deadpool
Hawkeye
Spider-Man
(Even a quick matchup ratio would help)
-
truth be told, how good is machine gun assist? Does it have good durability? I’m not expecting it to beat disruptor or plasma / unibeam of course, but how does it do in general?
-
lastly, what kind of damage does Chris do optimally from a hit confirm (solo)
If anyone would be willing to help me out, I’d greatly appreciate it…thanks guys !
-
I don’t really think there’s a single best assist for Chris, because the assists he wants cover a lot of his important flaws. His absolute best assists in my opinion have to be Jam Session, Vajra and Lariat though. But if I had to say, his favourite assist would have to be Jam Session.

Spencer is one of Chris’ most annoying matchups, because he can catch you with his zip grab through all of your grenades and Land Mine which also means he can punish all attempts to end a blockstring with a grenade/Land Mine making it even harder to be safe at the end of blockstrings, zip over your Incendiary Grenade puddles meaning it’s very hard to stop assist + zip, and I’m pretty sure his j.S outranges the blast radius of your Land Mine so you can’t win trades with it. Not to mention any time Chris is getting pressured he has to deal with a high/low/command grab mixup which you never want to be in, especially with Chris. Chris is also super free to guard breaks on incoming since Chris has nothing on his incoming. This is one of those matchups where Lariat is an absolute HUGE help. I’d say it’s 7-3 Spencer

Playing against Nova is more of a reactionary and positional matchup. If he’s close to you and he’s in the air, you need to try and get that airgrab or use a Land Mine to punish a bad airdash j.H. Sometimes, if you don’t have time to do either of those it would be in your best intrest to block and follow the next part. If he’s in your face, you need to push him away from you and be careful about throwing out normals, since he can easily whiff punish with his own cr.M. Try to get a Land Mine out so he can’t dash up in your grill and go nuts, then zone him with Incendiary Grenades, make him air dash towards you and go for an air throw or anti-air him with the Shotgun. The Shotgun will see a lot of use in this fight. Fullscreen, if he gets up a Pulse (the shield) you should try to blow through it, preferably with the help of an assist so you can break the shield in one Magnum shot. I’m pretty sure you can also go Prone and shoot under the un-powered up shield, but I’m not quite sure so I’ll have to check. This is another matchup where Lariat is a huge help, as well as Jam Session to act as a midscreen Lariat. Bolts of Balthakk are also a very good check to Nova and his assist calls. It’s probably worse, but I feel like it’s a 6-4 Nova

Deadpool is quite a hard matchup for Chris since Deadpool’s full screen projectiles are not only faster than yours, but he goes very low meaning you can’t Magnum him to beat his Happy Trigger not to mention he can H teleport on reaction and punish you, and Machine Gun doesn’t have enough durability to beat all of Deadpool’s bullets, not to mention if they clash he can cancel into a teleport and punish you. The smart thing to do here is to go for a superjump d.H xx Magnum punish, but a smart Deadpool will cancel the guns into a Teleport and punish you on the way down (See the recurring theme here?) If Deadpool takes to the skies and starts throwing grenades at you, there really isn’t much you can do but try to slowly approach and go for an airthrow. His Ninja Gifts (the stars) are a pain in the ass to deal with too. Vajra is a massive help in this matchup. Deadpool is also very threatening up close because his low lights are very fast AND can be rapid fired AND can be chained into his overhead which is safe on block. 7-3 Deadpool

I always find the Chris/Hawkeye matchup to be very much in Chris’ favour as you can just blow through everything Clint has with a well placed Magnum shot (Except Piercing Bolt, but you should be able to see that coming). One thing Chris has against Hawkeye is that Prone Shot goes under ALL of Hawkeye’s horizontal projectiles, and hits him out of the start up of his upward shots making him have to approach you. You also have better normals than him, but be wary of his st.M as it’s pretty much a sword normal. Full/Midscreen Grenades aren’t too useful in this matchup since he can just Gimlet you while you’re doing all of them, but are very good up close since Hawkeye hasn’t got anything besides his level 3 to get him out of pressure. Speaking of Gimlet, you can actually react to a Gimlet and go into Prone Position from neutral and his Gimlet will WHIFF. I love doing that so much. Not to mention if he tries to Gimlet you while you’re Prone, Chris has some invincibility while getting up making it miss again. You also have the added benefit of having a huge amount of life, meaning Hawkeye has to spend a lot of meter or get a lot of hits to be able to kill you. Most of the time, it’s both. 7-3 Chris
-
Unfortunately, I don’t have much matchup experience vs. Spider-man, but what I do when I go up against him is throw out Incendiary Grenades and Shotgun a whole lot if they’re just doing Web Ball xx Zip since it hits him a lot of the time. I guess Jam Session would be the best assist in this matchup since Spidey can zip to bypass the tracking of Vajra.

Machine Gun is a fairly decent beam assist. The two best things it has going for it is that it’s very low to the ground meaning no-one can crouch it like many other beam assists, and the other thing being that it leaves them standing which is very helpful for starting combos. It does have it’s problems though, like how it does 125k damage in 8 hits which scales the combo A LOT, and it’s durability can’t match many other beams and projectiles but it still functions quite effectively as a beam.
The optimal corner combo for 1 meter nets you about 850k, whereas the two meter version can get you up to 1.05m while still being meter neutral. (At least I think these are the optimal combos)
Chris’ midscreen combos with his back to the wall suck so you’ll only really be getting around the 750k mark for one meter.
A standing Magnum confirm from full/midscreen will get you 431k meterless, whereas a standing Magnum confirm close to the corner gets you 900k for one meter.
In the corner Chris can get 792k off a throw for two meters, off a midscreen back throw into the corner he gets about 577k for one meter, front throw about 550k.
If there’s anything else you want to know or want me to elaborate on, feel free to ask.
So Ive been wanting to run Chris/Jill/? but checking on the Jill forums it seems like thats not considered to be a very good team, as far as Jill goes, so I wanted to know what the Chris forums thought about that team, and who would best round it up.
Kind of just want a second opinion before I decide to play them on separate teams, in which case I was wondering what Chris would need the most, from the very informative post above mine it seems like the main things are a good gtfo and anti air assists, so as far as alternative Chris teams I also considered Viper/Chris/Strider and Chris/Trish/Doom but Im not really sold on any of them yet.
I actually play chris dante jill
dante its the AA and jill its my get off me counter
Hey guys, Im currently messing around with Chris (Gun Fire)/ Dante (Jam Session)/ Vergil (Rapid Slash)
but mainly I was curious if anyone else has played this team and has any suggestions on tech, because I am currently struggling to find the team synergy here, if there is any. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks
And how’s that worked out for you? Thats one of the teams Ive considered running myself in order to use them together.
I play Chris Redfield and he is my best character hands down. I have played many of you in the threads suck as AlexanderVorg or NeedleCrash and I believe NeedleCrash mentioned me before. Any ways I have read almost every page to do with Chris and have followed alot of advice from you guys. I wish I could post videos for some combos I came up with including Chris’s best teammates who I believe to be Dante, Haggar, Vergil, Strider, Spencer. Jam session is invaluable in ever aspect for Chris so let me ask you guys what do you think of a team composed of Chris, Haggar Dante? The damage on the team is unreal if Chris or Haggar lands a hit and it comes packing the Chris, Dante shell as well as Chris, Haggar. My Dante is terrible and needs massive work. What are your opinions on anchored Dante? I think he plays fairly well.
I also want to break down my team:
Chris: I believe strongly rush-down with Chris and setting up grab attempts outweigh his zoning mentality most people fight for. If Chris grabs you the opponent is good as dead if you know any good combo’s that utilize good meter management and damage. I believe Chris is most effective as a point character as he builds meter; however, he is also pretty lethal as a second character as well. Any Chris player worth their salt knows that grabs lead to death and I believe that is his strongest option on offense. His Cr.M is also a good poke coupled with flame thrower canceled back dash land mines. Chris is also hefty and can take major abuse form chip and live. Chris’s main weakness is clearly the air and insane rush down such as Wolverine or any teleport character. His worst match-ups in my opinion are Spencer, Wolverine, Crimson Viper, Vergil. I never do well against these opponents. They rip me to shreds with teleports or the greater mobility. Chris to me is still undervalued. I believe he still has massive potential in this game. Senor Taxi beat Chris G with his Chris, Dante shell and was called a scrub for it. The thing that urked me was every magnum Taxi landed he could have killed Morgan if he was running horizontal assist for Spencer. The combo of that team of a magnum is one million in itself! I have yet to see someone land a double hyper with jam session as an extension; however, it is possible! After flame-thrower Chris launches and calls session while immediately spiking the opponent into it. Session rises them up to get hit with another S. You delay the S and buffer M grenade and cancel into Grenade Launcher hyper and all hits connect. This alone made me rethink how good Chris is. His damage is insane! He kills you while building meter. If someone knew this please post a video of the extension I mentioned. Anyways Chris’s purpose on the team is to build meter as well as touch of death on almost any confirm. Lariat mitigates the rush-down and a confirm of Lariat still lets you double hyper if you use the Dante extension I mentioned. Of a defensive Lariat you can net 1 million damage and come out meter positive! I believe this is an excellent team for Chris. The other important thing to note is that most Chris teams I see mentioned only support him alone and have no backbone if he dies. The specialist set-up I believe? This team on the other hand works just as much for Haggar in terms of damage and combos and let me explain why.
Haggar: Mike Haggar is a great character in this game yet he loses to one of the most used concepts of a fighting game: Zoning. He loses for free against any person who knows decent keep away and suffers immensely from the most dominant succubus in the game. He comes with his losses yet he is still used heavily for one reason. The lariat controls rush-down and it stops most offensive characters in their tracks and makes them think twice about hitting buttons. I believe he is best on point as well and this is where it gets relatively tricky on how I designed my team. If Haggar has an unfavorable match-up on point use Redfield. Chris Zones and Mike rushes. So you switch them according to match up. Haggar combos hit just as hard as Chris combos and gain insane meter as well. Mike can finish someones team of real quickly if they press buttons. However as I mentioned he needs to be able to deal with zoning and people argue that landmine is better than gunfire because incoming potential. This is where I disagree. I believe UMVC3 is a strong meta and the better your meta the more successful you are. An example would be Senor running slant shot for a combo extension; however, horizontal is better in the meta as well as an extension. Well that is debatable so moving on. Gunfire covers Mike really well and lets him close in and keep the opposition grounded. There is one other problem though people laming him out in the air and this is where jam session plays role. The screen is unsafe is Mike is close to you and he can gain quick leverage with session. I have hit so many people with a pipe of jam session and sense it spirals them upward no need to worry about the wasted ground bounce. This is where I would like to say Haggar, Dante is incredibly good. They benefit each other immensely and this is where I believe most Chris teams fall apart. They have two assists however the assist characters themselves do not get along. I used to run Spencer, Strider with Chris and of any hit the opposition would die but if Chris died the team only had one mechanic left lvl 3 Strider. I sat in the lab trying to find synergy with Strider and Spencer but was never satisfied. Needless to say this team gets along in every way I can think of, Chris and Haggar have so much synergy it is damn ridiculous. They work back and forward and even Mike’s arcade mode ending has Chris in it They both only need each other to touch of death and have assist synergy that compliments each others weakness’s. So Chris gets what he wants as well as Haggar. Chris, Dante is damn right bananas. Chris will clock you of any hit if he is totting 2 meter. Ex: Magnum (full screen) Dash FM Magnum, dash FM cancelled THC Dante lifts with million dollars while Chris launch nades and wait I am not done yet. At the end of the Hyper you have ample time to dash and wait for his grenade to smack the ground into Dante’s jackpot bullet, dash fwd flamethrower, s, Air S, falling magnum, cancelled flame thrower, boulder punch m, sweep, combo! Touch of death of a damn magnum! However combos are not the only synergy a partner needs. They need to help in the meta game as well. The jam session extension I mentioned compliments higher damage but jam session also sets up everything Chris needs flame nades you name it. I would also like to point out sure Dante benefits Chris in every damn way possible but what about the son of Sparda himself? I have seen Densuo mention he runs combination punch as an assist with Chris and more power to him but machine gun IMO does just as well as setting up teleport mix-ups, block-strings and so forth. This is not about Haggar is it? Okay one more thing I would like to discuss is Dante and how bad I am with him.
Dante: Easily my weakest team character. He is brand new though so that will be my excuse for now. He is on anchor and this is where I need to be enlightened. I understand every Dante mechanic there is yet can not utilize them well. Needless to say yes I can bold cancel, I do have combos but my meta game is down right ass. All I do is fish with air play. I would like to now your thoughts on anchor Dante. I will also trek to the Dante forums but most of you use him so thoughts?
I will now end my post and if you guys have a PS3 just message HylianLegacy. I will reply right away either the same day or the next. I would love to spar with some of you and up my game further. I love this game and have been playing it religiously since vanilla. I do have a job though but I can and will be on most days. I hope to get a camcorder to record my tech but that is a another story altogether. Start with the replies do not let the Chris forums die! I would love to know your insight and hope to hear from you guys as soon as possible. Please do critique my team as harshly as possible or demeanor of typing. Let me know whats up?
Well, you run 2/3rds of my team. I’ll shoot an invite on psn sometime. Retnuhs66 is the tag.
You also run 2/3 of my team, even though I play zero second or play vergil anchor. I always wondered how to extend chris’ s combos with vergil. Also against teleport characters its more of knowledge of what most playets do and reactions. For hard rush you just push them away until you can viably make space. For dante you can actually play him point with gunfire assist so uou can do call assist stinger bc teleport for hard mix ups. Anchor dante you don’t have many choices just lots of teleport mix ups like multilock teleport grab or helm breaker or just box dash h to low he is viable as an anchor just do short combos that do ahit rons of damage aka million carrots and volcano
Power. I have an extension with Vergil’s rapidslash. I still love to play Vergil and he can get a double hyper as well. I can show you it online if you wish. The jam session extension I mentioned works with rapidslash as well. The timing varies but it will still work. Chris, Dante, Vergil eh? You can net massive damage with that team. The THC with Chris and Vergil is also insane. Chris, Vergil have great synergy I just do not like rapidslash as a meta assist is all. Rentnuh66 I would love to play you. I will send you a request. Everyone else feel free to add me. I will play most anything from FT10, lobby sessions, or just about anything you can think of.
Pretty well really i have my doubts but if you get too much pressure like mag or wolverine you can always counter with Jill into a full combo but making a good use of Dante assist its rare that you gonna use Jill since vanilla i think Dante its the best partner for Chris i actually think this team is some standard
but trish doom dead pool etc gonna be hard you have to go in or change jill to strider
Have any of you guys fooled around with Chris backed by mystic ray assist? I just started messing with it last night as a side option for an anchor since Haggar gets a ton of utility from it himself. So far Chris backed by ray seems to create a very, very annoying wall of projectiles for seemingly a good portion of the cast. Plus, the assist is actually terribly easy to use as an extender to most of the Chris bnbs that we have and it causes a good deal greater hitstun that I first gave it credit for.
Any thoughts on this or am I overreacting since I’ve never used an actual beam assist with Chris until today? Haha
Trying out Chris/Dorm/Haggar, the order seems a bit rough and Haggar on anchor isnt too great but it has been relatively successfull so far. Any knowledge/info on this team or close to it out there??

Why not switch dorm with Haggs? Dorm anchor can actually fight back without getting zoned out 24/7 plus dark hole has to help Haggs more than lariat helps dorm.
That being said, you could prolly find easy team synergy/ setups for the team by watching both Ramasama’s and Bruno’s match videos and merging the two styles together.
