I dunno why everyone mistakes the meaning from The Last Samurai. Tom Cruise isn’t the Last Samurai, Katsumoto and the other samurai in the end scene were. Historically, after that time Japan was trying to modernize/Westernize and the samurai era was kinda coming to a close.
What people are really thinking isn’t really “Why is he the last samurai?”. It’s more like “Why the fuck is Tom Cruise a samurai at all?”.
Well, he lives with the samurai for a while, and he fights alongside the samurai. He wears a samurai suit and follows their ways. He picks the samurai over the americans/Industrializing Japanese. He’s alive at the end. That’s pretty good reasoning for people thinking that he was intended to be the last samurai.
