[Jan 20] Throwback Tuesday: Weekly Tournament Series @ Victory Pointe Gaming Cafe Pittsburgh PA

Hey everyone! After a year of craziness I got my arcade in Pittsburgh Open! (1113 East Carson South Side 15203)

If you are wondering about anything here’s an AMA I did about the arcade, I think it answers most questions: https://www.reddit.com/r/pittsburgh/comments/2sa9jz/just_soft_opened_an_arcadecafetabletop_space_in/

I don’t want to have so many events that people get fatigued and our weeklies don’t get enough to run real brackets. On the other hand I do want to try and get a variety of people in, and I want to showcase as many games as I can.

We’re going to start selling memberships soon that get you past the venue fees. Probably about $75 a month.

All the tournaments will have a Venue fee of 7.50 which gets you casuals on consoles and freeplay on all the blast city cabinets. Basically the 7.50 gets you the all-you-can play wristband minus the free tokens. In addition there will be a tournament pot fee of 5.00. So for 12.50 you get in for casuals and tournament entry, and add 5.00 to the pot. If you enter multiple games it’s still one venue fee, but multiple 5.00 tournament entries. If you have a membership the only cost would be the 5.00 per tournament. All the $5.00 fees would combine and make the pot. Probably normal 1/2/3 pot split.

Planning to run games in seasons, with a big prize for winning the season in addition to the weekly pots. Plus it gives people some bragging rights, since we’re putting some big monitors above the bar to show the menu/pricing, and one of the rotations on them will be current standings in the season for each game. So everyone who comes in can be jelly.

Throwback Tuesday is going to be our main weekly. We’ll have a 3rd Strike tournament on our 3S cabinet, as well as a USFIV tournament on our console setups. In addition we’re going to have a third game each week that rotates. The third game will be Capcom vs. SNK 2 (Arcade Cabinet), Super Street Fighter 2 X (Arcade Cabinet), or Vampire Savior (Arcade Cabinet). We’ll be trying to stream them, but the first couple might not be streamed since we need to mod our cabinets to output and get all that sorted. Streamed or not though event will be held.

I’m also trying to get in touch with the Smash Community, since I’m fairly sure they’ve got the numbers to guarantee a functioning weekly.

Now the games that I don’t know if they’re popular enough for weeklies in this area.

Mortal Mondays: Killer Instinct(Xbone) and Injustice every week. Rotating cycle of UMK3 (thinking of getting the tournament edition hack for our cabinet. . . agree or disagree? It makes the game a lot more viable, but some people really love how broken standard UMK3 is, although if shock or the guys from cinci come, they’ll just run-jab everyone to death.) Mk2 (also possible to change our arcade version to the homebrew TE hack) Killer Instinct (arcade), and Mortal Kombat(2009). I personally love all the American made gore-fighters, but I dunno if we’d get enough turnout to make it a weekly. Thoughts?

Airdash/Kusoge Night. Probably Wednesday? UMVC3 and GGXrd as the primaries. HnK, Skullgirls, GGAC+R, Fighting Climax, UNIEL, MvC2 and Arcana Heart 3 taking up the rotation. Consider the number of animu games and how small turnout would be I’d probably run two of the others each week. I think we have a few people around who would come to play MvC2 and GGAC, I dunno about the others. If I ever find a genuine Jackie Chan board, I’d totally add it to this night. Pittsburgh is best at Jackie.

SNK Action Evening! Weeklies in KOFXIII, then rotating through all the obscure Neo Carts we have. We’ve got a ton of awesome SNK fighters that nobody gives a crap to learn (SamSho V Special, World Heroes Perfect, Breakers Revenge, Garou Mark of the Wolves, and Last Blade 2.) Also windjammers. Also Super Dodge Ball. Also Twinkle Star Sprites. We should have 2 working neo cabs by the end of next week, and we have four console setups for KOFXIII. I dunno who is into SNK or which ones to focus on though.
