I personally think that $5 pot is too little. $10 is much better.
The problem that will occur is that you will never have full consistency on weekly or ever bi-weekly basis. Certainly if Tyger is planning on starting ranbats in OP, that will just take away from pool of players that would come. Last issue is…Sunday appears to be a horrible day for all of this to happen. As I’m sure you can tell…a lot of people bitched, bitched, bitched about having no where to play, came out a few times, and then disappeared. This is typical of Jacksonville and you should prepare for the number to sway up and down quite a bit.
I do honestly believe that the day of the week is what hurts attendance the most though. If you want to have weekly ranbats, I would move it to another day. It seems like most people are available on during the week. I would look at doing that instead. Organization, promotion, and consistency is key for this to work.
Aside from that…I would run 6 or 8 week ranbats with a three week break between each season (run casuals or standard tourneys during the break). 90% of the pot paid out each week and the other 10% gets placed into a pool that is given to the point winner of each season. That should be more than enough incentive for people to come out regularly. I would make it a requirement that 10 people must enter for top 3 to get paid or else just top 2 get paid out.
I agree with spek. Except with my schedule I can’t for sure say ill be there during the week. But sunday I always have off and can come early with a setup if need be.
Shoutout to kicks for gettin it in on AE with me today. Not a lot of ppl responding lately online so its always a breath of fresh air to play someone from jax for a change.
Yo!! I know Ive been MIA, havent had much time to play anything lately aside from sneaking in a few online games. Wanting to get back into it, so wheres the sessions at?? Brandon I tried getting a hold of u thru that number, didnt know it was Johns phone lol. Whens the next session homie?
These weekly ranbats sound pretty dope. I agree with Spek, I think it should be a $10 entry instead to make the pots more worthwhile and spike interest. I’m going to try to make it out to Hammer Hall regularly from now on. I need to knock the rust off my 3S game as well before 3SOE comes out. Bring the 3s crew out this week birds!
So as of right now I should have off saturday. That could change but here’s to hoping. Anyone wanna hit up that tourney in tally? I think team hnh should go. Lets do this.
Mann i had the $$ for this past weekend/ride fell thru. They also changed it to this upcoming so i bought a new unlocked phone instead, i cant make it BUT jeff/joshua im down 2day and fri, i wanna c jeff pull out that oro/alex shennanigans. Cell, u n max should go and take ltorres(zero/mag player), and i think u guys will do good. Righthanded i got your pm juss lemme know a time n date. brb in like 20 min/neighbor wants to toke it up haha
I agree with you for the most part, spek. Jacksonville is a huge city, and people may not able to make it out to OP weekly. Also this way there could be some North vs South themed events in the future!
Concerning pot fee’s and layout may I suggest a $10 entry with 75% weekly pot and 25% carry over pot?
The day was predetermined ahead of time. If I remember correctly they were open to Saturday or Sunday and it was settled on Sunday. We could re-poll the community to see what would work best day would work best. It ultimately lies in discussions with birds! and the owners of HH. If we did move it to Saturday we would have to coordinate with tyger so we can scedule around his tournaments, which should not be any problem.
I also think the 6-8 week seasons would be ideal, 13 week seasons is too long and much too hard to keep track of.
Good looking out, spek. I appreciate it. I guess I should rephrase the question to the community:
What do you want in a Ranbat?
One more note about the end of the month tournament at Hammer Hall. In addition to the pot I will be throwing the following as prizes to generate some mini-hype:
Two tickets to the Jaguars game Thursday September 1st against the St Louis Rams; section 215 row C ($110 dollar value)
A 1600 point XBL card.
A new TvC SE stick. <<< Figure someone can use it for shell or parts…
i think that the 75/25 split is too much. it will discourage casual players (the ones that wont show up every week) and out of town players. who wants to travel to only gain 75% of a pot if they win?
I will take that off your hands. I really do not believe that anyone else will be using it, (even for parts or just the shell) and I actually need another TvC stick because I always need more!!
Shoot me a price if you are down, or I can just buy it from whom ever wins it.
I did some additional number crunching and I tend to agree with you. Unless there is an explosion of participants it doesn’t seem worthwhile, tending to lean to larger weekly pots. Closer to 20 participants it may seem more worthwhile to get closer to 75%/25% . **It just goes to show you that it is more worthwhile the more people come. **
I changed the google doc to let people see what diferent scenrios will do the weekly pot / ranbat pot.
Spreadsheets are easy, if you need any help understanding it PM me:
The issue with Hammer Hall right now is that we are pretty much stuck on that day. Originally we had the option for Thursday or Sunday and I had talker her into Saturday but the majority of the community felt Sunday would work out better so I ditched the Sat. plans.
Now we pretty much have to go with that day. The place has too much stuff going on during the rest of the week for us to jump on another day at that location so if we want to do a different day and weekly RanBats we have to find another location.
To be honest “scouting for another spot” is something I’m constantly doing. I have some friends moving businesses around and opening things and other things are closing down and everyone is in a real transitional spot out here right now… but once things start to coalesce I should have a better idea of what’s possible with locations and days. I’m specifically looking for a bar/club day.
As far as the RanBats. I think the OP one and the RS one are different enough pools of people that it won’t be that big of a deal. I do agree this city likes to be really lurchy and weird with it’s attendance/support of anything. Nothing to do about that though except make them feel like they are missing out by not being there every week.
Sying if you want to run the RanBats at HH on Sunday as a trial thing I say do it, if you aren’t happy with it or find a better location/day of the week… well I’ll still be holding Sunday down making sure there’s at least one day for people to attend near city-center. So no harm in trying.
Also, those prizes are awesome and thanks so much for the generosity to the community on that one dude! Are you splitting them up so they last multiple tournaments or do you want to use them all on this upcoming one? If using both then is the prize determined by placement or is it winner’s choice?
On the pot split numbers. I’m not sure I understand the out-of-towner/infrequent argument. The only point of running ranbats is to encourage consistent weekly turnouts… so why would you tailor it for people who only come occasionally and/or from out of town? (Doesn’t the once a month tourney already do that?) We aren’t trying to build a “successful business” here. We are trying to stimulate a local community so we can all get better and “level up” with each other. That requires consistency. Hence the RanBat attempts. Rewarding returning players. If we are gonna do it then we should do it the fullest the idea can go. If the people (enough people anyway) don’t show then the local community doesn’t want it and we can try and move to something that does cater to those willing to come and build from there… but we don’t know until we try right?I mean I already said I agree with the observation about how people are around here but the idea would be to do something that changes that behavior right?.. not cater to it. At least not if you can help it.
I know this whole paragraph doesn’t help or add much but… Just my two cents.
I prefer the 75/25 payout system. I feel like there should be a significant reward for the top 3 ranks at the end of the season, looking at the math on Sying’s spreadsheet, 90/10 only gives 30$ to 1st place for the entire season (assuming 12 people per event @ 10$ entry).
As far as entry fee goes I say $10. The only thing that worries me is that more casual players will be turned off by having to pay $15 a week to play. Jeff and Thomas seem to think it will get more people to come out but im not so sure.
Also Sunday’s work well for me. I wouldn’t care if it was switched though to any other day except Friday and saturday.
Well any issues with the higher amounts of entry cost are kind of moot because anyone turned off by it can still show up and just pay the regular 5 to the store and get to play casuals all evening anyway just like it is right now. The RanBats are entirely optional. It’s just there for those who like that kind of thing. AKA The local regulars who like playing for money. Shit even the end of the month tourney is optional. People can still just do 5 dollar casuals on that night.
I hear you, birds! So at least for season 1.0 Sundays are a lock.
I think one reason the turnout has been low is due to the lack of advertisement. I mean other than THIS forumn, I don’t think anyone knew about it. That won’t be the case for this next tournament and Ranbat.
Does anyone on this board do any graphic design? PM me, I’d be happy to pay a fee for a professioinally done flyer.
About the prizes, I plan to give it all away at the next tournament.
Lol. Trying to make a " sucessful business" is a curse of business majors like me and spek. We want big sustainable numbers!
Truthfully, considering last tourneys numbers, im only expecting 12 people. A whopping 50% increase ! Anything else is gravy.
And seriously who are we kidding, we all know Brandon is going to body us all
UA is still going to have ranbats, I think Wedsday or Thursday. Tyger is heading up that movement. I’m sure he will post something once he knows the details.
Hey guys. I know some people hate long posts, so I’ll try to sum things up for everyone who doesn’t wanna read paragraphs.
Hammer Hall Ranbats: They want to do a trial 6 to 8 week season which consists of basically weekly tournaments on Sundays. There will be the venue fee of $5, plus the tournament fee of $5 or $10 (depending on what the community wants). The cash prize will be split 90/10 or 75/25, with the first number being the total given out on that same night (top 2/3/4). The second number will be held until the end of the season for whoever has the most points (top 2/3/4).
**Underground Alley Ranbats: **It’s the same idea, except I plan for it to be either Wednesdays or Thursdays depending on a combo of what community wants and what the owner is best with. This will start on the week after Storm Underground 3, which is on Sat, September 3. So I want to kick things off on either 9/7 or 9/8.
**My thoughts: **I personally think with ranbats that it should be cheap enough for people to be able to feel comfortable going every week. A total of $15 is a bit pushing it. It’s not a large-size tournament, but meant for to stimulate the community playing on a regular basis. The large tournaments will come monthly or bi-monthly. And yes, they COULD just go for casuals, BUT we want to really really encourage people to participate! That’s the purpose. So I’m all for the $5 venue/$5 tournament fee with a 75/25 split. After 8 weeks, that’s 200% in the pot! Even if it is only 10 people a night, it’s a good $100 for the winner. Not awesome for a TOURNAMENT, but awesome for a ranbats! (in my opinion)
Also, with one being in OP and the other being in Jax, it’ll give people more of a choice since Jax is reluctant to go to OP and vice-versa. AND the ones who ARE willing can drive for both if they are hardcore!
tl;dr - We wanna do weekly ranbats starting soon! Get your money and skills ready!
Sorry for double posting, but I’ll be on XBL to play some AE if anyone wants to get on around 7:30pm. Message me on ddrtyger and I’ll send you an invite.
You know what? That’s a very very good point. I completely agree and change my stance now. Jahrasta was correct. 5 bucks for RanBats makes more sense… The monthly tournament can be the 10 dollar function we run. Accomplishes what we were all talking about. Small bits for regulars with a larger cumulative payout, larger less frequent payout for those traveling in from out of town/infrequent showings.
Sounds awesome.
So that’s my vote now.
5 buck RanBats (split however but bigger end pot is better IMO as it rewards showing up)
10 buck monthly Tournaments (70/20/10)
