Jackie Chan in Fists of Fire is gdlk

no rom talk

Why do people feel the need to play shitty games to feel special or get attention?

Ask anyone who plays BlazBlue.

Anyways, I was going to ask you guys, is there a tier list for this game?

OK red jackie knowledge train:

His hcb+K is actually really good and works as kind of an option select, not the greatest, but w/e. The lack of throw whiff animations means that if you aren’t going to hit the throw for w/e reason, it’ll just stick out a kick for you (think darkstalkers).

So basically, get in range for a throw, best way to do this is like, run up, {d+lk}x2-3, dash in again, HCB+K. If you use light kick, it’ll throw out a back hopkick on a backdash out which is pretty safe, can potentially jump lows if they attempt to counterpoke, and will squash jump out attempts (if somebody wants to do that instead). Also, once you hit the HCB+K, you can do a HCF+HP and hit them while they’re falling to reset them. You then have a chance to dash up and go for either another command throw, the low poke train, a qcf+K to beat out counterpoking, or an overhead if you’re ballsy (this is just a little bit slow, so you can get reversed pretty easily by some chars).

Because this isn’t a shitty game even if it looks like one. And like I keep saying, it takes no effort to learn, so you can be ultra-serious about SF4 or Tekken or whatever and still have fun with this. Seriously, have you ever actually played this game with other people?

Oh yeah, and breaking down obscure games has been my thing for years.

Anyway…

I might be able to pull off another quick character guide tomorrow. Probably Sam since he’s garbage and there wouldn’t be much to talk about.

On that note, Lobelia, here is my personal tier list:

TOP:

Lau - Solid normals, tons of safe chip damage (blocked anything into qcf+HP or super). His damage potential is so-so on crouching midscreen opponents, and his throws don’t lead to anything at midscreen, but in any other situation he can score 50-75% easily.

Thorsten - Low short has huge range for how fast it is, and low HK is a great footsie normal. Gets decent damage from his throw at midscreen, and huge damage from it near the corner. Low short x2 leads into something like 60-70% without super, and a guaranteed 100% with it. The latter is really what puts him up here since meter is pretty easy to come by in this game.

Chairman Jackie - Overall best mixup in the game. Low short leads to a meterless combo much like Thorsten’s, he has the best throw (55% or so at midscreen, up to 70% in the corner), and he has an overhead that can link to dashing low short. His super doesn’t scare you the way Thorsten’s does, but it’s still one of the best thanks to its safety and huge chip damage.

Drunk Jackie - The closest thing to a “complex” character this game has. His projectile is great for two reasons: This game is almost completely ground-based, and even if the opponent hits you the jug will still trade in your favor. He also has the game’s best overhead - faster than Chairman Jackie’s and links to dashing short-fierce XX rising tackle. And up close his qcf+LK is a hard-to-block crossup that leads to a little extra juggle damage. His throw is the worst and his overall damage potential is lacking compared to the others in this tier, but the jugs give him real space control in a game that has very little of that. That combined with his mixup is good enough to keep him up here IMO.

MID:

Yeung - She’s got a legit keepaway game and a nice overhead in qcf+LP, but she deals less damage than anybody except maybe M.Lion. One of her main problems is this game’s engine (read: the dashes), which makes it easy to bait and punish whiffs; I’d take Drunk Jackie’s jugs over zoning normals. The other issue is a glitch that allows over half the cast to perform OTG infinites only on her.

Dragonball Jackie - Boring but not bad. The one move that keeps him competitive is the flame kick, which beats the low short/throw mixup that so many characters live and die by; apparently it may not be safe against everyone, though, so be careful. Also, his command grab is good as per yourmother’s post above…that’s about it for interesting things to say.

Kim-Maree - She & M.Lion are the characters I know the least about, and BBH would be able to add a lot more here than I can. Basically, though the game makes her out to be the grappler, she’s actually better off zoning with her great set of normals. This gameplan seems to present some of the same issues it does with Yeung, though she can’t be OTGed forever so that’s a plus. And her d/f+HP throw is better than her command grabs, one of the best throws in the game period. If you can mash hard and never get tired, she’s not a bad one!

BOTTOM:

Sam - See, he could easily be mid-tier since the damage is there, but they forgot to make any of his B&B’s hit crouching people. His rekka kicks, his canned combos, even his super all whiff! And since he doesn’t have a good overhead or a scary throw at midscreen, there isn’t much of a reason for the opponent to stand up and risk losing half his life. Thus, the best ol’ Sam can do for the most part is low short->low jab xx qcf+LP. That’s Yeung-esque, and he has none of her good things.

M.Lion - The one character who may have even worse combos than Yeung. His projectiles aren’t as good for space control as Drunk Jackie’s, and I think they have worse startup. Jab psycho crusher doesn’t knock down at all, and it’s extremely hard to make the fierce version do so. His slide is almost if not always unsafe. His super is actually not bad, though I still don’t know how to make shit fall from the sky (the one good thing about it). He may have more potential than I suggest here, but there are just too many flaws for him to rise up to mid-tier even.

do i dare…

OK, here’s my quick guide to Sam:

Sam plays the same type of game as many other characters, looking to dash in and mix up low short combos with throws. The problem is that he rarely gets good damage from either of these options for the following reasons:

  1. He can only combo from his throw in the corner (and not even then vs. M.Lion). Combine that with the fact that his only OTG move is low short, and his throw at midscreen is the single worst in the game.

  2. All of his good combos whiff on crouching characters. His rekka kicks, his canned combo, and his super will all whiff in this situation. You need to get very lucky to catch an opponent standing, especially since he lacks a strong throw or overhead.

With that being said, he does have a couple other good points. He is one of the 5 characters with an OTG infinite on Yeung, and it’s quite easy; it works from his throw, and it even works when you hit her crouching. Additionally, his qcb+K can actually be a nice tool against projectiles (read: Drunk Jackie & M.Lion), and there aren’t many others like it in this game. That still isn’t enough to keep him out of the bottom tier, but it gives him a couple competitive matchups at least.

COMBOS:

cr.LK-cr.LP xx qcf+LP: The only thing that works on crouching characters. Bleh. At least it can begin the Yeung infinite.

cr.LK-cr.LP, s.LP-HP-HK-HK-u+LK+HK, juggle w/ cr.LK xx qcf+P: Nasty damage if you can ever catch someone standing, although there are some execution hurdles. You want to make sure the s.LP is a link and not a chain from cr.LP or else the canned combo won’t come out. To make the last hit of the canned combo connect, perform it right as he lands from the kick. And to cancel cr.LK to qcf+P, you need to let go of the stick right after the cr.LK then begin the motion, or else you’ll get a qcf+K instead.

The majority of the time, you’ll want to use qcf+HP, but on some characters you’ll have to settle for the LP version instead. If this combo ends at midscreen, you may not be able to get qcf+P at all depending on the character, so instead you can do a pretty cool reset by performing cr.LK xx the full rekka series; the last rekka is an overhead and will hit right as they land. Not sure if you could mix that up with 2 rekkas then low short…

cr.LK-cr.LP xx super: If you have meter and can confirm they’re standing, go for it. His super isn’t even good for chip damage since it can be ducked, so you might as well use it here.

(Corner-Only) Throw, cr.LK xx qcf+HP: You want HP throw the majority of the time and HK throw for one or two characters. Doesn’t work at all vs. M.Lion.

A few friends of mine came over tonight. For the hell of it, we all played this game for the first time. Started around 9 pm.

In a span of about 7 hours, we played over 150 matches.

This game is crack.

Real talk, once this gets booted up we usually don’t stop until we’ve gotten around 100 matches in. It’s ridiculous.

Couldn’t help but to say that years ago my nickel arcade had this very game in it’s original cab. However that was years ago when I was a teen. The arcade is gone now… I am surprised it’s picking up for no reason.

I do remember playing against other people and the battles got really intense. I remember winning alot I was so good at the game back then.

The part that makes me laugh is that Spiritual Kung-Fu Jackie is now known as “Shitty Jackie”

JChan2 finally made it to MWC. Not too long until it’s main event at Evo.

To contribute to the topic, I haven’t seen anyone mention it, but Red Jackie’s Tiger Fist seems to be a pretty good tool. Doesn’t chip like White Jackie’s Dragon Attack, but it causes you to bounce back on a block, making it harder to punish; plus it does pretty decent damage, and seems to have some invincibility frames during the second half of the glide, which would make it pretty safe from a distance. I haven’t tried comboing into it since I’m usually fighting him rather than playing him, but otherwise it seems like a decent pressure move. Haven’t really been able to test it online since no one’s ever up for a match on Kaillera, so it could just be that no one in my little JChan2 group knows of a consistent way to deal with it.

Need more Red Jackie mainers. Chairman and Drunken Chan get too much love.

This game was brought up at the Crow’s Nest last night. BBH was there. The funny thing about this is that i played this game almost every day for 2 months at my local bowling alley in Aiea, Hawaii, back in 1995-1996. And i was a mystic jackie player.

Jackie Chan at MWC was crazy. I might have to pick up this game…

got this running last night. bummer that i can’t put it on my xbox system, but i guess it just gives me reason put together a rom collection on the pc now.

Did any of it get recorded?

Yep!

I gotta say, that was the most garbage Jackie Chan tournament I’ve ever seen in my life. Best not even come to EVO.

Speaking of which, I hear there’s a Jackie Chan side tournament at EVO, where do I get more info on this? Or just keep it from me if you don’t want the best Jackie Chan player IN THE WORLD there.

EDIT: By the way, NorCal’s “TIGHT or FIGHT!” tournament on 6/12/10 is going to have Jackie Chan as a side event. We’ll find a way to stream or record the matches so you all can see what REAL Jackie looks like.

MWC’s jackie chan tournament was cancelled. Only three people entered, including myself.

The MWC jackie chan footage is from the mystery game tournament, so good job calling it garbage when its the first time the players playing have ever seen the game.

I assume anyone who’s legit at fighting games knows how to play Jackie. It’s the ST of “shitty” fighters.
