best match ever for SF4 for now man Daigo is so good with his mind reading DPs
Justin as far as I know qualified with Balrog for SBO, though feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
I think this is the reason why Daigo dominates the way he does. Regardless of who you pick, he stays with Ryu. He knows all his matches, weakness, and strength to the character. He just adapts to the player he is facing instead of jumping to the next character to gain an advantage with the matchup. Perhaps this is what separates us from the Japanese. Justin threw 3 different characters at Daigo and still he failed to beat him. We should take note.
No lie but I stood next to daigo…I think i peed my pants at that point and never realized…but errrrrrr this match was too hype you had to be there or YJDK!!!
I’ve been playing SFIV since the loketests here in Japan, and having done so I kinda understand how this works now.
From the start I mained Chun. I have alt characters too, but not nearly as much experience with them. If I was messing around in the arcade with an alt, and a good opponent stepped up, I could either try and stick with the alt, accept the losses and work on improving the alt, or switch to Chun for the best shot at winning. I choose to switch to Chun. Trying to spread out my playing time among 2-3 character would take away all the experience and knowledge I could build up with just one.
So now, if I want to win any match, I have to use Chun. Akuma is one of my alts, and its generally agreed that Akuma goes 5-5 with Sagat. But MY Akuma would get killed by any decent Sagat, so I gotta go with Chun even if its an uphill battle for her by the numbers. On the other hand though, having fought so many Sagat’s with her, I know the matchup - what to do, what not to do, what they are expecting me to do, etc. My experience with Chun far outweighs the potentially better toolset that Akuma might have against Sagat. Your Sagat had better be ready for my Chun, or else that number advantage means nothing.
Some people think that Japanese players don’t have alt characters, but that’s not true; many if not most of them do play around with other characters, it just that when things start to go serious, they go to their main and stick with it no matter what the matchup numbers look like. …Having said that, I believe that Daigo only plays Ryu, but most of the other guys do have some alts (Mago has been playing around with Abel recently, for example).
Fundamentally I think its the same concept - adapting to your opponent by changing things up. Just, the way the Americans and Japanese go about doing it is different. For me, its kind of interesting to stick with one character and then learn all of the matchups - including the bad ones - and how to change up your playstyle while using the same character to win matches.
Hey i’m not trying to talk shit, so don’t be a neg rep ***. I give big props for Justin getting second, and i’m sure he’ll do good shit at SBO. Just wondering why he didn’t do any turn around punches (x3 kicks or punches) to go through Ryu fireballs in the last matches. It not good or safe?
The japanese are strong because of the the vibrant arcade scene…not because they stick to the same character.
This isnt an american thing its the tournament format; double elimination, daigo changed his char in sthd remix.
Anyway, you guys are acting like jwong counter pick boxer isnt top 5 american boxer. (best footsie wise imo)
If there was 2 set tournies in japan you would see counterpicking as often as in all the tournies around the world.
Again counter picking is not not the reason japan is “ahead”, the vibrant arcade scene is.
Just to let you know im one of the guys who sticks with one character, and i disagree with you guys.
He was probably afraid of Daigo’s constant low forwards interrupting and being cancelled into a combo which daigo was probably buffering.
its not safe on block. Also he probably didn’t want to give up punches or kicks since he needed them for pokes.
And the reason the arcade scene is alive is because their country is small compared to America. They can have all their top players in one place constantly getting better.
Good insight here. It is the same concept and we do go about doing it differently. For example Im currently learning Akuma. Bison being my main, I have lots of knowleadge on all his matchups. Well I had no idea how to play a decent Balrog. Tonight I was playing my friend, his Balrog vs my Akuma. For the first 3 matches I didnt get a round and we were playing best of 5 rounds. Trying to find out the do’s and dont’s of the matchup. Eventually, I started to get some rounds on him. Still didnt win a match yet but I was about too but he had to log off. I didnt give up, or switch to a character to try and gain an advantage. I stuck with Akuma regardless of how bad I was doing but I was gradually doing better.
I have met a lot of players online and off and the do not try and follow this style of play. They always go for the best top tier character and if that one doesnt work they go to the next. I always talk to them about it and all i get is some ignorance response saying something alongs the line of. “fuck that I wanna win!” A lot of people play SF for the wrong reasons. While winning it a good aspect of the genre, it isnt the only.
Nope that’s correct, and Marn his teammate qualified with Rufus. It’s funny tho because a lot a people didn’t know Balrog was one of Wong’s character.
I didn’t say which was one better - just that it was the same concept being applied differently. I personally don’t know which one is “better”. Something to think about though - as I said, it looked like towards the end, Daigo got used to Justin’s Balrog. If the matches had continued, Justin would have had to either re-adjust with Balrog, or pick a new character.
And ST is kind of a bad example to give when talking about counter characters, because there are some pretty badly lopsided matches in ST.
Is amazing how many fadc into ultra Daigo landed.
Your right no way is better both tournie styles are just results of the scenes.
could be argued for a few matches in sf4 like rufus ryu. again arguable. there are no 8-2 matchups but there are some 7-3’s
Also yeah they played long set and daigo made a quick adjustment before wong did. It’s not like he cant win agaisnt daigos ryu anymore with boxer, i know you did not mean this though.
Evo should just be one character only. Counter picking to try, and win is a lame move. I wanted to see if Justin improved his Rufus vs Daigo…
Yeah travel out to vegas to go out 0 and 1 and peaced out.
/asshole
Really there is a reason why things are done differently than in japan.
Wong said in an interview after his loss at the gamestop tournament that he was going to counterpick daigo with rog, but a month later he said he was going with able, so at the time of the stream i was wondering if he was going to go with rog and when he did my jaw dropped and shit got real serious, but i was in for a surprise because justin brought it man, he took took it to another level.
The reason SBO works with 1 character only is because its 2v2. So even if your character has a terrible match up hopefully you partner has a better math up. Making evo a place with only 1 character would just hurt players who use characters with 7-3 match ups. Its fine the way it is. Counter picking is a tool, its not fail proof as we’ve seen time and again, but if you can use it effectively that makes you a better player.
**Yep.
Balrog was Wong’s first main…**
I would rather go out with my main than win via counter pick. Have some dignity.
Thank Jebus for the Sakura’s, Gen’s, Cammy’s, Guile’s, Fei Long’s out there to make Evo exciting. Team Wild Card was the most exciting shit I have ever seen.
I’m a Remy player, and I’ve never counter picked anyone with Chun, Yun, etc… Winning with your main is that much sweeter shit tier, or not. You don’t invest that much time to switch characters. I think Justin just wanted to beat Daigo more than winning the money that’s why he didn’t pick Rufus.
