It’s a much better situation for gief since has the option to close distance quicker then T Hawk with Green Hand and of course having the all purpose Get out of jail free (lariat) crossup defense.
My fear everytime I play Hawk instead of Bison online is that my opponent will be picking Blanka, other matchups might suck but against Blanka I might as well just put the stick down. But I also hate Blanka no matter what character I’m playing. Him and a Seth who just jumps back and spams j HP are my personal kryptonite.
Why is everyone having trouble with honda? I’ve had no issues with Honda’s I’ve run into while using hawk. Cr. Jab spam can beat headbutts clean, even the EX version sometimes (not recommended vs ex headbutt), it works really well if you walk cr. jab spam inching toward him, at least it did for me, it works extremely well if you do it on reaction, thawks cr. jab hitbox extends a pretty good ways, go into training and test with honda doing all versions of his headbutt and practice hitting it on reaction, you can do the jab pretty early and still have it hit him.
If you got the knock down and cross him up with his HP crossup and he butt slams, block it and you get a free 360. All his butt slams are free 360’s. His neutral jump HP can be annoying, but if you predict it you can knock him out with a EX Tomahawk if close enough, or dash in EX tomahawk if you smell one. Well spaced St. MP’s work well against his jump-ins. Use St. Mp (has to be a bit close but it can hit him if he is crouch blocking), Cr. mk, and St. Mk to poke him. Just remember to cr. jab when standing still (within footsie range) to shut down his headbutts and force him to jump at you. I was always throwing out normals in this match and mixing them up with cr. jabs to shut them down.
Maybe the Honda’s I were playing were bad, but I didn’t see any big problems in this matchup.
Unfortunately Honda’s autocorrect exHB punishes you for try to crossup splash. So those tricks don’t work well. And EX TB loses to his nj.FP unless it is almost point blank. Or it trades at best. Good Hondas won’t butt slam against THawk, but sure if they do then SPD or U1/Super. I believe you can CS his HB and get trades so if you have a big lead you can do that for trade victories if needed.
Guy–wake up is free crossup into whatever until he has a bar of ex. i’ve had some success baiting this by jumping as if I’m going to crossup and early diving over him. Obviously, just crouch blocking is safer. Anti-air Guy rather than attempting to meet him in the air. if Guy isn’t winning every air-to-air battle he isn’t playing correctly (command elbow and either bushin grap are beastly) though i’m not sure if anti air spire will lose to air grab–my guess is it will, with ex spire needing to be grabbed by ex airthrow. Learn to block the run mixup low first then stand on reaction if they overhead. Normally, I’m fine being a grappler and getting corner pressured, but you don’t want to let yourself stay there against Guy because anything he lands turns into free U1 for him or maddening resets.
like a lot of hawk matchups, get the life lead and make him come to you. that’s when you follow dhevil’s advice and rock those normals till Guy’s lifebar is empty. also, i’m working on a bunch of hawk combos and i’ve noticed that on guy you can land crossup splash, cr.jab. st.jabx3, st.lk xx spire for 6 hits and still get right back into the mixup game. However, on characters like ryu you only land 2 st.jab or else you whiff the far lk.
Its a patient game against the shoto’s. Hawk has to bull his way forwards blocking fireballs, or neutral jump waiting to see something to punish with condor dive. I am trying to learn putting ryu and akuma in the corner and stepping back to a distance where I can just use normals to punish things.
What do people use against Ryu/Akuma Coward-Copter to punish? I’ve used condor spire into LP typhoon a grand total of 1 time on reaction but am not sure of it being reliable to punish a Ryu who know’s its coming. Dash into standing RH is just too slow and the ryu blocks.
How do people deal with akuma’s teleport punish wise?
I’m going to guess that standing Roundhouse is going to be your teleport punish of choice simply because of the range it covers. I haven’t fought too many akumas though. Weird how I used to see characters all the time in SF4 and now I’m like, “Oh, wow! An Akuma/Sagat.”
Should be really easy to test though.
Edit: What do you guys use to punish any blocked Cody special moves? Are his ruffian kicks safe on block? It sure felt like it to me, or at least he was pushed back far enough that I couldn’t 360 it all the time.
Any general advice on the Cody matchup? He is a tough one for me.
Ruffian kicks are not safe and I’m pretty sure you can punish with a typhoon. If you block any of Cody’s moves there’s room for punishment. If you can’t reach him with a typhoon go with a s.hk or s.hp cause those will probably hit him.
I would also like to confirm the Ruffian Kick situation. As for Akuma, a big reason I play T. Hawk over Zangief is because I can catch up to the teleport much quicker. Everyone else has a teleport that is fixed position, Akuma has the screen move with him.
Is it true. St. Fierce leads to the rape of a shoto?
Edit: Of course, I don’t know if it is because it is early in the game life, but I haven’t encountered the stagnant supply of opponents as I did in Vanilla. I see a lot more variety but I have only reached around 10% of the matches I fought in Vanilla. Is it due to variety or the addition of “double Blind” character picking?
I think you need to go study this match up better. The only DP chars I have problems with is Cammy and SOMETIMES Gouken (Gouken really depends on the play style of the user) because it’s impossible to tell the two fireballs apart on reaction. Learn how to bait DP’s and Ultra’s and you should have no trouble. A good Ryu will frustrate you more than the others though. Akuma is not really a problem…his life it too low to hang with Hawk. Ken is ALWAYS DP happy. Sagat…if he’s throwing FB’s, you should be able to win no prob.
There is no one button answer to fighting shotos, you have to know every button and attack hawk has. IMO Hawk vs Ryu is 5-5.
edit: I would never, ever st. RH against shotos, the recovery time is too great, what you gain in range to try poking with it over st. Fierce, you get punished with a 30-40% jump in combo on whiff.
