untechable knockdown is a knockdown that can’t be teched. In other words, when you get knocked down, you can press down to immediately get back up, however there are some moves that give untechable knockdowns. THe most common ones are throws, sweeps, supers and ultras, and command throws
I love it when people say Dudley has no footsies. That’s just total bullshit. s.hp, f.mp, cr.mk are all good pokes. Other characters have better but it’s not like you’re Dan.
Complaining about people throwing you out of f.mk? Seriously? Are your blockstrings that stale? Mix it up with s.hp, cr.mp/s.hk xx ducking, SSB, cr.mk/cr.hk.
Abel’s CoD is a free DP on block. Just means you don’t use it as a poke without meter to FADC or you feel like taking a risk. Same with ducking straight/uppercut. And you can space Ducking Straight so that it is safe on block. Just because you can’t throw it out whenever you feel like doesn’t mean Dudley is bad at all.
People grab you after your overhead? Follow up with Jet Upper FADC or SSB.
Seriously if you’re complaining about people mashing stand grab I don’t think you’re playing people good enough to judge how good Dudley is. If there’s one thing Dudley can do, it’s punish mash grab.
We just need to keep contributing to the match up threads and increase our knowledge. We’re playing a new character and with very few people playing as him, we can’t wait for someone else to figure it out. I’m not half as good as most of you guys but I try to share my own experiences hoping someone can take something away with it and refine it to better use.
Seriously though, without commenting on Dudley’s viability as a character, safe blockstrings ending in specials shouldn’t be a problem outside of fighting grapplers and characters sitting on a 1-2 frame super/ultra since LP MGB is the only one you should be using without hit-confirming. Also, at least his EX SRK FADC leads to respectable damage. iirc the most Ibuki gets off of a FADC’d EX Kazekiri is raida for about 150 damage and sending the opponent to the other side of the screen, and she’s still a lot better off than some characters in this game.
Edit: If you’re talking about normal grabs after a blocked f.HK then they aren’t guaranteed since the move is -1.
IMHO empty duck should be used around the tip or so of where a Ducking Straight from a light would connect. Otherwise you can’t really keep the opponent honest with anything.
Dart Shot is only -1 so you shouldn’t be getting thrown on block for free
i’m guessing that you’re following up w/ jabs or something so the throw is gonna win out
try to meaty the Dart Shot and that should make it at least 0 on block. it’s active for 4 frames so theoretically you can make it plus if your really bold.
as for just using it to mix up i suppose backdashing couldnt hurt
s.rh Empty duck is something that needs to be spaced i think, only a few characters had 3 frame c.lk’s
remember its only -3 so the punish has to be on the frame so it’s not 100% useless.
being that you can bait low techs with s.rh xx ducking its really too useful not to use
if people are grabbing you out of your strings like f.mk and such then you have to make them block
c.lp is +2 but f.mk is 8 frames, thats a 6 frame window you leave for them to do anything
c.lp to s.rh or c.lk is only a 1 frame window so if they try to mash throws or jabs or such, it should counter hit them, and you can combo from there
as for the challenge to win w/ dudley, poking i think is the biggest achilles heel. even in forced oki you can just get a reversal once in a while. being unable to get in on characters like sim chun or guile just simply forces you to rely on them making mistakes. dudley’s doesn’t have good footsie, but he has s.hp which is essentially the move that punishes bad footsie. OSing or hitconfirming s.rh into other things helps too but its not practical against certain matchups.
honestly i dont know if dudley is good enough to win a tournament but im not gonna use anyone else. and im not one of those character specialist people. i tried like 5 other characters and i just dont like using anyone else in the game.
moral of the story? i’ve come to the point in this game where if someone goes to me “yo man i wanna use dudley he looks awesome any advice?” the first thing i’m gonna say to them is “pick balrog”
Overhead is -1 on block, and you have ALL DAY to hit confirm off it. So you should never be spamming cr.LP after it regardless hoping it hits and getting grabbed. Wait.
Dudley’s best tool? His cr.LP. NOT because it is a 3 frame jab, although that is good. Because it is +3 on block. THAT is your mix up. cr.LP blocked. What comes next? A throw? A cr.LK? An overhead? A st.HK? To play Dudley to full potential I truly believe you need autistic execution skills, and the reactions of a Top Gun fighter pilot.
CH st.HK xx Empty Ducking > st.HK xx LP Jet Upper > Ultra 2 is redonkulous damage. Trade LP Jet Up > Ducking Straight > Super/Ultra 2 is stupid damage. Hell, his BnB with 1 bar is just shy of 400dmg. He’s a monster.
He is just free on wake up. Not completely free, a 4 frame invincible Uppercut is pretty darn good.
I don’t think anyone is really showing Dudley as what he can be. A frame trapping, 2 combos and you’re dead, rushdown beast.
