Just wondering. I think it had the lowest turnout of the 3D fighters, and although it has a dedicated following, I wonder if the canons view it as worth doing again. I would hope so, but I was curious as to what everyone else thought.
I sure hope so. It’s the only game that I feel I can do reasonably decent in. Not saying I’m any good or anything…
EDIT: Oh yeah I’m just wondering, since I never went, how many people actually entered?
I’m not positive how many people entered for Virtua Fighter… I want to say around 60, but I could be really off. I didn’t pay much attention to it since I was never into the game very much. I was just kind of surprised by the fact that some of the big name Japanese players (like Ohsu Akira and Chibita) were absent from the tournament. Does anyone know the reason(s) why they didn’t come?
I actually figure that if any 3D game will get cut from the tournament (aside from Tekken 4 for Tekken 5) it would be Soul Calibur II. I really don’t want to see that happen since it’s my favorite 3D fighter, but the community for it practically doesn’t exist anymore.
Probably didn’t want to pay money to come to America to beat up on American Vf4 players. Better comp in japan and no need to get on a plane.
So what changed their minds? Evo2003 finals were hot. Ohsu Akira & Chibita was the shit. I guess you can’t go every year, but the regulars like KO & Daigo always seem to make it.
Maybe you’re right Seerd, maybe they don’t bother since there is little competition in VF4 in evo.
They didn’t come, because at that time Virtua Fighter Final Tuned was out already and tournaments were going on. We did have a showing of Kurita(Venessa), Bear Crusher(Pai), Raoh(Lau), Itabashi(Shun) and a big cast of others around NA. It wasn’t like nobody came to the event. NA VF players are now traveling to Japan to compete in Beat Tribe’s Cup every year sponsored by evo 2k3’s mc Mr. Yamagishi, so things are really looking up for VF after this slow session. If VF5 comes to the arcades this year or VFFT to consoles expect things to change. With our contacts overseas we all try to get some of the best to show every year, but you have to remember these people work too for a living and vacation is a LUXURY, so getting time off is very difficult. We can all hope for the best and appreciate VF being able to be played at the EVO’s.
Makes alot of sense, thanks for the info Kaminari. I hope that the VF scene in Evo (and non japanese areas) will grow. But with Tekken 5 possibly being the highlight game this year, could be another average turnout again.
Japan has also swithed to VF4: Final Tuned. Dunno the exact differences tho. =/
Sadly there is no news of a console release though, if they plan one. Unless there have been some news which I missed?
As far as I know, most of the differences are just tuning adjustments, kind of like the differences between XX and #R or the five different versions of SFII. Of course, that’s just what I’ve heard since I’ve never actually played VF4:FT…
I highly doubt there would be VF at Evo…I remember someone saying something last year like “none of the Japanese players are going to come if it’s not FT”, and unless you can find someway to make the tourney run smoothly on one cabinet, let alone getting one…AFAIK, only AI has it…but yea like Kaminari_Oyaji said, if VF goes to console, things might change…
They are major changes from Evo to FT. Each character has at least 4 new moves and if you have a registered VF.Net card you can have 2 exchangable moves. There is a new counter hit system with 3 levels of counter hit properties that depend on the strength of the attack interrupted. They also added frames to succesful and failed evades. Attack damage was scaled yada yada yada…
The latest version released was ver.B; In NA, Toronto and So.Cal have it. NYC has ver.A.
Most of NA will play any version of VF since the mass majority has not played FT.
There may be ways to have FT at EVO
Just a thought, but it may be quite possible to have Toronto’s Final Tuned at EVO (this includes card readers). Well, put it this way, I’m offering to have it there. Not sure who I should talk to for this, mind you.
As Shag pointed out, the majority of players in NA have not had much exposure to Final Tuned. That being said, the game changes would not prevent a strong VF4 Evo player from competing well.
As much as I know I am amongst the minority, I would think it would be a shame not to have Final Tuned and have Evo in its stead. Two reasons being that there are groups that do have the game, and secondly there’s zero chance of having any foreign players from Korea or Japan come to EVO as they have moved well beyond the days VF4 Evo. It’s one thing to have NAVF players who are new to FT come to EVO, it’s another to get foreign players to hop on a plane for an ‘old’ game.
I’m not sure who mentioned this earlier about no big names at EVO2K4 (i.e. Chibita or Ohsu). Just for the record, neither Ohsu nor Chibita qualified for the latest Japanese Sega sponsored Final Tuned national tournament, KS3, however Itabashi Zangief - who won EVO2K3 - won KS3.
.cheers.
It has to be FT or nothing at all. Im from Socal…we might be able to get our FT VerB from Arcade Infinity…so that 2 setups? 60 people? would take quite a while
VFDC members at SRK. It’s a party indeed.
Seriously, Evo is a console tournament. You guys can bring boards but what about the setup. I highly doubt we could get vs. city cabinets. Can Naomi2 hook up to a Super Gun? That’s how they ran 3S last year.
Just want to add that I really hope VF:FT manages to make it into Evo this year. It’s very important that it be FT, especially if we want to be attracting any players (as in the past) from overseas.
