Is trash talking a negative thing?

Nope, it’s just far more prevalent in the US, I don’t make any assumptions as to why but it’s a widely known fact that Americans generally trash talk far more then the Asians or Europeans.

For real. I know this guy from Lebanon who speaks so much trash that, at one poin point, it’s really unforgiving. I swear, the next time he says shit to me, I am gonna kill him.

Personally, I dont talk trash. But I don’t have a problem with it. I think Terrell Owens said it best

“If you don’t want to see me celebrate, then keep me out of the endzone”

Not saying winning is a free pass to be a dick, but there is something you could do about it.

It’s a fact? Could you provide some kind evidence to back up your claim?

Or is it just something you believe?

You’re full of shit. It’s a fact.

All the proof I need really, and I think we should leave it there, unless you absolutely must have the last word.

So you knew all this and still started a thread huh?

Well since you started it and it’s not closed, here’s my 2 cents:

There’s a difference between “fun” trash talk and “ego” trash talk. I usually use the fun one, but sometimes you just can’t help letting someone know you’re surprised you beat their 3000 more BP/GP than you Sagat ass. Once you know the other side doesn’t appreciate it though, it should stop.

And as for Justin…well i get the impression that it’s all set up to create more hype, because i seriously doubt you can be a dick in every single match and still never had your eye blacked because you just happened to do it to the wrong guy, i for one think i’d punch him in the face on reflex if he’d suddenly be in my face like in that youtube video.

I’ve played competitive sports my entire life. And here’s the difference as I see it:

Internet punks hide behind a veil of anonymity. When there is banter between opponents on a football field, basketball court, boxing ring… or arcade tournament - you look your adversary in the eye & adhere to certain social conventions. If you cross certain lines - there are inevitable consequences which will be broadcast to family and your own non-gaming community. This helps keep people in check.

Online, its a risk free, confidential free-for-all. Which is why we have SO many tough guys & their resulting trash talk.

i don’t randomly trash talk at all, i actually think it’s pretty lame.

but there were 2 guys this past weekend that I beat the crap out of and had to send them a message…

the first one, his name on XBL was “REAL SKILZ” so after I beat him, and i beat him badly, and he was not very good at this game in general, i put a 1 line message to him saying “FAKE SKILZ” and he replied with 2 letters … FU.

the second one, his name on XBL was “Capcoms Hero” and again, i beat the crap out of him and it didn’t even go into 3 rounds, and i messaged him after “If you are the capcom hero, who’s going to save you now?”

i didn’t get a response from that one :frowning:

yea those were 2 douchebag messages but I dunno, the XBL tag made me do it!

Trash talking is unproffesional, unsportly and dumb.

That’s why you click on “Avoid Player” on Xbox 360 and have the ability to chose “Trash talking” as an option. Of course it’s a bad thing because trash talking is often so subjective that it leaves the truth

i can’t really smack talk because i think it just sets myself up for failure lol. i get paranoid and lose focus. but despite whether or not it’s negative, i think it’s important to know how to deal with trash talking, since it’s always going to be out there. given the previous examples, i think it’s just as unprofessional/unsportsmanlike to react to trash talkers in such extreme ways. a real athlete knows how to remain calm and keep his composure.

I’d really like to know which SRKer banned you from their offline tournaments. They probably don’t allow Marvel players either.

I suppose you can trash talk, but after the game if you can have a handshake that’s fine.

The bottom line is dun leave behind a bad taste, it’s just a game for many people like me to relax, not a real boxing match.

Trash talking makes you look like a child, joking with your friends is ok. You learn where to draw the line just like you do in everyday life.

Playing on the playstation network I don’t come across many people using headsets. When I do though I always have more incentive to win.

How rewarding is it to listen (Fuck, OMG, I blocked that!). Lol I love it.

People with microphones that talk trash is always funny too. Then when you win… silence…

That’s cool, you know you’re making things up wholesale. Trying to cover it up with a smug response fools no one though.

Regarding the video that the OP posted: Fuck justin wong.

Great player, shitty attitude.

If you can’t win graciously, you fail at life.

Well it doesn’t matter who it was. Whether it was Wizard, or some other not veteran SRKer, or if it was a small case of talking, or if I was using every racial slur and threatening to kill his unborn children, the point of the thread is to educate myself on what everyone here thinks is appropriate.

So far, it’s mixed, though a slight advantage (so far) will be towards trash talking is a more negative thing. Friendly or not.

honestly i feel like trash talking is necessary to push each other further. its more or less like having a rival. i honestly try harder when the other person is a complete ass and all i want to do is beat them. me and my friends trash talk each other all the time in person, when it comes to random people its a little different but i think the concept still stands.

I trash talk when I am having a real challenging match against a player who is doing anything and everything to win , who taunts and who just thinks he won. I just trash talk by saying small things like … WHAT !!! or Too quick for you . or Nice try better luck next time bub. I know it pisses players off. But too bad.

haha its just that I get so hyped I guess not really a bad intention for me.

When I lose I never trash talk , I actually compliment with a bit of trash talking . Something like " you fucker you got me good gg" or "bastard I will have my revenge lol gg "

I really only trash talk to players who do one move all day long and think they will cheap me to death but in the end I comeback and win. I totally trash talk in those matches. Akuma spammers,Guiles who just sit far away and wait for flash kick and sonic boom all day , Zangeifs for sure.

I think there is a difference between “competitive” trash talk, and “hateful” trash talk. Telling someone your going to kick their ass is fine, calling them a no skill homo who should learn how to not be a retard or something, is not cool.
