Is trash talking a negative thing?

face I had a similar situation happen to me on the PSN two days ago. Some random guy who beat me in Championship mode msged me calling me a "fg" and saying it was “2EZ”. I asked if he knew me or something and he kept talking shit, I talked back and asked if he wanted to go for a couple player matches against my actual main char. He accepted, I won all 3 matches and had to go, praised him for the good games and then I get another msg saying I just “got lucky” and that I was still a fg running away when he was “finally ready” to beat me up. A few mins later he msgs me again saying he was just kidding and wanted to be friends.

Seriously wtf. I’ll accept some hype and fun in the molds of ‘curleh mustache’ among friends, or in a friendly manner, but don’t come up to me with this “go fuck yourself you skinny f*g lol you suck” pretending it was just a joke afterwards. You crossed the line, you got beaten, learn your lesson and move on.

yeah that sucks, at least you got a rematch, professor stoli wouldn’t even give me that he just wanted to talk shit.

one thing is trash talking and another thing is a personal insult… which i never pay attention to either one of them cause thats a waste of time, the only thing that people need not to do is cursing out, there no need for that in videogames

my 2 cents

TD Out

I keyed your car last night. Now you have to fight me over this game. SALTINESS PRIME TRANSFORM AND GRIME OUT!

I dont trash talk, but I dont mind when people do it to me after I beat them, it is a little annoying when they do it when they barely beat me…

Since this tread seems to be just for kicks, I’ll chime in. It reminded me of something from this weekend.

I’d forgotten what a master trash-talker my dad is until I had the joy of seeing him in action playing cards with some of his pals this weekend. I mean, it was a never-ending, relentless stream of hatin’ on their skills, bragging over each trump, and generally laughing uproariously at their misfortune. Reminded me of when me and my bros were little kids playing basketball with him. He’s 6’4" and played ball all through high school, so it was pretty comical with us midgets leaping in the air in a futile effort to block his shots, lol, then listening to his good-natured ribbing. I guess growing up with a dad like mine you are already pretty inured to trash talk from an early age, so it doesn’t bother me much.

That being said, I think trash talking can get out of hand when it starts leaving the scope of the game. Trashing someone’s lack of skills, mistakes, playstyle, etc. is all fine and good, but calling a person various slurs or making fun of their weight, appearance, or whatever seems out of hand.

trash talking is playing to win, pure and simple. If you are losing, and you get in your opponents head with words, you deserve the win. There is a reason it has been so successful as a strategy in combat sports since forever. Muhammad Ali got in his opponents heads months before his fights and then used that basic psychological distress against them as he pounded them out within the ring.

Trash talking is like using bullshit rule-breaking techniques, do it at your own risk. If you are in a casual environment, and you start busting out Kara-Throws, roll-cancels, etc. you are probably gonna get ostracized or get your ass kicked where I’m from, same thing with trash talking.

Back when there were local tournaments however, trash talking was actually encouraged. Why? Because it makes people interested. Why do you think people still remember bitter feuds in sports all these years later and still take sides? People like confrontation.

Really, depending on the enviorment, there is no real negative to trash talking. It builds up certain events and makes more people interested, gives something memorable for everyone to discuss, and is a perfectly acceptable strategy in order to win. Why try mind games when you can just throw your opponent off his game with much less effort?

Now I don’t get all crazy with the shit-talk, because I beleive in the game doing the talking (in whatever you compete at), and I don’t think shit-talking more than the other guy makes you more competitive, but the above quote = HILARIOUS.

And I have never met a Canadian I didn’t like…

I don’t think much of it, and I try to avoid doing it myself as it is generally done by pricks.

That being said, if someone starts the show, I find myself all too eager to jump in on it. This is mostly because those that start the talking (especially online) are the people who are losing.

I’ll never understand how getting your ass handed to you somehow gives the sense that you are amazing.

I’m better than a lot of the opponents I have played recently. Having just bought a stick I am losing a lot of matches I should easily win against very unskilled people. But when I lose I just move on to the next match and berate myself a bit. Haven’t felt the need to send smack-talk to them. I’d like to think I am above that. :stuck_out_tongue:

In my group, trash talking is generally smiled upon and we only do it when we’ve bested a person in a really good fight, such as “hell, ya! the fuck outta my house!”.

I think of it as a compliment, actually. Kinda like “Damn you, Zero! That was so fucking hard!”

I think alot of why we play is to interact with the people, and in a small playgroup, we’re in an unorganized tourney where trash-talking is the prize. Trash talk is just a part of the game as much as the sticks we trick out and the fucking game itself.

I’m sure none of us want to go through rigorous ettiquite (Sp?) procedures during playtime. Hell, last guy I beat at a tourney hugged me and punched me in the shoulder. It’s just how we interact.

I think when you’re online, you don’t know anything about the person, so I guess the closest thing you can think of them as is your enemy. That’s why people who send messages like that are thought of as assholes.

oh so you live in jerk town

 No matter how many times I see this sort of thing, it still cracks me up every time.

Honestly, if you can’t tell that about Justin even from watching the videos of him trash talking, you’re entirely missing the point.

One of the best things the FGC has going for it is the egos and characters involved. If it was all a bunch of weeaboo jerk offs preaching about codes of honor, etc. there wouldn’t be near the scene that there is today. Sure, trash talking in an arcade is far different than trash talking online. And yeah, some people take it too far, but most importantly they really suck at it. The best trash talking certainly isn’t calling each other names.

For a good example of this, look at Yipes. Mahvel is a fun game, many would call it a great game. However look at the simple penetration of the game on the internet now-a-days mainly due to those two famous Yipes videos. Yes, Mahvel still has a pretty good scene, but if you remember when tu4ar’s timer hit zero and not only did tu4ar go down, it took down capcom and for a little bit SRK with it. That kind of popularity and publicity wouldn’t have been possible without the personality that is Yipes (no homo) and those famous videos.

People say they want to see fighting games have more large tournaments and more mainstream events, but what they don’t realize is the key to that is having “heels.” You can have your fair share of honorable players, but a bunch of nerds all being respectful in a room and no drama doesn’t break out of a relatively tiny little community. While creative trash talking and “villains” and large personalities/egos can make something hang around forever. (Look at your DarkPrinces, etc.)

My stance on shit-talking varies by the person doing it…most people suck at it and just yell random shit. Some people though…shit talking is an art, when you see the guys with so much style it’s hard not to respect, since they’re probably way better at talking shit than playing the game.

I really got nothing more of use to add to this thread other then Alucard is a fucking nerd.

i don’t know man, that game that a bunch of fuckfaces play made it pretty far solely on the things you mentioned

I basically agree with this man here.

stop being bitches and get hype. honestly trash talking makes me a better player cause it gives me that much more incentive to not lose.
