Is there a trick to removing adhesive from the top panel of an old HRAP?

I’ve tried using Goo Gone and steel wool and a stiff brush. It seems to move some of the adhesive off, but this stuff is seriously on there! I’m thinking about letting it soak in the Goo Gone overnight. Has anyone had luck with removing this adhesive before? Know any tricks to make this easier? Any pointers would be appreciated!

I used Gooe Gone for it. Let is sit for 20 to 30 second then used a credit card to scrape it off. Repeat until it is all gone. Don’t use the steel brush because it is not hard enough. Use a flat hard card like an ipod card or a credit card because this will work like a for paint scraper. I did this for 2x T5 and a Hrap 1. XD

Awesome! I just tried scraping it with a thin metal spatula and that’s working so much better! It’s going to take at least 1 more round of Goo Gone then scraping. Thanks so much dude!

I removed art from two old Horis recently. They were a bitch. Goo-gone was pretty worthless here. I had to get some stronger stuff from my stepdad’s garbage. I think it was paint stripper or something of the like (I’d find out from him). I also had to scrape it with very thoroughly with a razor while soaked in it get it off.

Goo Gone is very good for removing stickers… However, you HAVE to let the liquid soak into/onto the adhesive! That may mean 1, 15, or 20 minutes.

I never had a problem removing adhesive from the T5 faceplates. After soaking 5-10 minutes, I could take off the remaining adhesive just pushing off with a finger or thumb nail. Not so sure about other joysticks from Hori or how you guys put your art. It all depends on the adhesive you use. I found the 3M sticky adhesive was fairly good at keeping art secure on a Wii FightStick. It wasn’t so tough that when I sold the stick that I COULDN’T remove the artwork for the new owner. It peeled fairly easily and didn’t leave much, if any, residue. (Note – the art I used was laminated. That can make a huge difference right there! If you spray directly onto any paper, it’ll be a HUGE mess if and when you try to remove it!)

On the other hand, when I was trying to remove a particularly stubborn sticker from the outside of my rear car window, I not only had to soak that sticker in Goo Gone I also had to use a razor blade! The razor worked really well in removing the softened(?) sticker and didn’t leave a scratch on the glass.

No so sure I would recommend a razor blade against metal, though. It CAN scratch the faceplate…

Update: nearly all the adhesive is gone! I’ve sprayed it off with Goo Gone about 3 different times now and let it soak for at least half an hour each time. @therobin - you’re totally right…a razor blade paint scraper is the best tool for this job! I’ve sprayed it one more time and I’m just going to let it soak overnight and then scrape it off one more time tomorrow. After that, I’m planning on cleaning it off really well with dish soap/water. Then I’m going to prime it with Rustoleum so that it won’t rust before I find a case to install this bad boy in.

Oh you have a spray? I use Goo Gone but it comes in a bottle, I barely had to use any at all. I poured some in the bottle cap and put it on my SE’s top panel and spread it around the surface. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, and wiped off the sticky stuff, it came off as easily as if it were water. I imagine the spray is a bit thinner than the bottled form that I use.

I use Goo Gone spray gel. It’s thicker than water so it will sit on the adhesive more easily to break it down.

Next time use a heat gun or hair dryer. That will heat up the adhesive to it’s melting point, then you scrape it off with a spatula or razor blade. For clean up then you can spray on a light layer of goo gone to get the left over residue. Much easier than constantly wasting goo gone and constantly having to wait and repsray.

Ah! Good call! This will also justify my buying a heat gun so my wife will have to let me go to Harbor Freight!
