Agreed. Every time Japanese Goku screamed out “KAAAAAAAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!”
It felt like somebody was scratching a chalkboard, just horrible.
Not to mention it was the first time that Goku ever got a major owning in the series.
Goku’s Japanese VA is supposed to be a kid at heart, though Masako Nozawa (who also does Gohan and Goten) adds some bass as he goes into ssj forms. She, as well as the rest of the Japanese cast, adds distinct emotion and character that makes Goku, Goku. Wouldn’t change it for the world.
However, this aspect doesn’t translate well for an American audience. Even still, I’d much prefer a voice that is undeniably Goku and not a generic superhero voice. As well as VA’s that can actually act, but now I’m nitpicking.
That’s just it: he’s not supposed to be macho. He’s not supposed to sound like a huge musclebound superhero. When we first meet him, he’s a 12 year old country bumpkin who’s never seen a girl in his life. This is crucial to understanding the character. Throughout the series, his body grows up, but his mind stays the same. He is in a state of emotional arrested development, and he only really matures through his fighting technique.
Of course, thanks to FUNimation, most westerners will only see the show for what they turned it into: a mindless fighting cartoon.
I don’t think anyone would have pegged any of the American VAs for “generic superheroes”. Mind you, I would have liked it had Goku’s voice gradually deepen over time, but how can you take a full-grown muscle-bound man in his 20s and beyond seriously if he sounds like a 12-year-old Japanese woman?
His voice did gradually deepen. But you’re still not going to get away from the fact that it’s the same actor. The man-child voice fits the character, and can also be seen as the opportunity cost for consistency.
And the answer to your question is, you’re not supposed to take him seriously, until he does something incredible. The voice enforces the dichotomy of the rather air-headed country boy and the amazing warrior he becomes when he’s facing a powerful opponent.
He flies around on a tree? I was wondering what the hell that thing was he flew in on in BT3 but yeah he’s pretty badass to wear a Pink costume with KILL YOU! written on it.
I personally like Sean Schemmel’s Goku. Masako Nozawa’s voice simply does not fit Goku especially when he transforms or is powering up an attack and he just sounds like a girl(Which his VA is lolz). Plus like EVERY Goku related char is voiced by her. Even Turles =/
The second grossest moment would be Babidi killing Spopovitch, but there’s no clip of that (also, the manga version featured a BLOODY explosion, rather than a plain, “boom” explosion).
CN should just show uncut DBZ like they did a few years ago. That stuff was RAW. Bird flipping, tons of blood, heads getting cracked, arms through the chest. Man, I can’t believe they actually showed it uncut. Was one of the best things they ever did.
Anyone remember the 2nd World Tourney in DB? Goku and Krillin were like 15, yet they still looking like freaking 12 year olds. That was just some laziness on Toriama’s part. That always just irked me a little. Speaking of OG DB, who did Sean do Goku’s voice when he faught Piccolo at the end?
Grossest moment in the entire history of the story (DB/Z) is easily the nasty dude from DB who touched his balls and then flung the sweat at his opponent.
