Ok after playing it for a good…checks ds 7 hours here’s my write up on Attack of the Saiyans:
Dislikes:
Gonna get the dislikes out of the way first…starting with how the overworld was handled. There’s nothing particularly horrible about it but I feel as a whole it could have been done better. Overworld character animations are relatively simple…they work but if I was to compare it to 16 bit sprite work like chrono trigger back in the day then it feels like it’s a bit lacking.
This is most certainly nitpicky but I would have prefered to fly to my destination in a similiar veign to the snes card rpg…just feels more dbz to fly around or at least fly on nimbus but I suppose they didn’t do that because of the time frame and the fact that goku isn’t always in your party.
Dialog could be better but it’s not horrible.

The effects and animations during battle are awesome.
Each time you level up you can assign 2 extra points to go along with the usual level up to use on 6 parameters (Power, defense, recovery, skill, speed, and luck)…this basically means you can pretty much customize the fighters as you see fit. You want Krillin to be focused on defense so he doesn’t get knocked around like in the show? you can do that. Want Goku to be the strongest person in the group (incidentally he is on my file) you can make that so as well. It sort of reminds me of Super Mario RPG’s/Mario and Luigi’s leveling up system.
Each character also has a Rage gauge that’s sort of like a mix between a Limit Break and Chrono Trigger’s double/triple team attacks. Finishing one of the bosses with a kamehameha from goku, krillin was pretty sweet.
There’s also Active Guard which is basically like SMRPG’s timed hits…though sadly they only allow you to defend yourself and not do double damage on any of your attacks. Often times the attacks come quick as shit too so you have to be paying attention to all 3 characters on the field (if you have all 3) since they assign a button to each of the three…(side note: you’re only allowed to have one character block an attack per enemy turn…which basically means if an enemy decides to attack everyone in your group then you’re going to have to choose who gets to block).
On top being able to customize the characters as they level up you can also level up your specials/ultimates/skill ups with the AP you’ve gained from battles.
Overall I think the game has some pretty good ideas and like I mentioned earlier it’s not going to win any RPG of the year awards or anything but as a dbz fan I think most fans of the game will find it pretty fun and I feel it’s a pretty standard solid rpg. Even though it could easily be better I’m still having plenty of fun with it, though if you don’t like random battles and turn based RPG’s then you may want to stay away it completely. It’s currently 30 bucks so if you’re unsure on it I’d grab a used copy…if you can find it. If I was to give it a score it’d be around 7.5-7.8.
(oh yeah almost forgot…if you’re one of those people who loves the japanese voices more than the english then you’re in luck. They kept the japanese voices for when the characters are doing attacks and what not)
