It is a little weird though listening to the Ocean dub versions of the character during the Android and Cell sagas just because i’m so used to the funimation voices.

hey I’m not really knocking the japanese voices…too much. Understand where I’m coming from…When I watch anime I generally always watch it with japanese voices. Usually they convey the character the best 90% of the time through the tone in their voice and just overall voice acting ability. I’m sure if I had been watching it in japanese from the beginning then goku’s voice would be easier for me…HOWEVER…When I have my computer or speakers a decent respectable level…the only characters voice that stands out the most is fuckin Goku’s high pitched wailing. My first time listening to Vegeta stomp the fuck out of Goku’s legs…I could have swore that blood was running down out of my ears from that shit. HE WAS LOUD AS FUCK. Understandable that he’s a kid in a grown up body and he’s getting his legs stomped… I can dig it. That doesn’t make it any better on my ears…ya know?
Goku’s screams and Broly’s sound effects are some of the loudest things I’ve heard from out of dbz

I’ll take no prisoners on this topic: FUNimation’s in-house voice actors suck. All five of them. Seriously, didn’t Sabat end up voicing over 30 separate characters by himself? When Schemmel does the Goku scream, he sounds like he’s about to shit his pants. The guy who does Kuririn… forget him. He’s awful.
Ocean Group’s voice actors were a lot better, but all the same, they didn’t embody the characters. Scott McNeil, Brian Drummond, and Ian Corlett probably came the closest, but I wouldn’t take them over the original cast on any day of the week.
i cant believe there are people who liked the english dubs…that was the reason i couldnt re-watch dbz, because i couldnt find jap with subtitles.
Remember when Funi first released their new eps, and everyone found themselves wishing for the good 'ol Ocean Group days? The between the music and the voices, it was just an all-out assualt on the ears.
The DBZ web was harsh against them at first too, until they found out that Funi was listening, and then they changed their tone with the quickness.

I was with two friends, who were also Dragon Ball fans and who, like me, were very excited to hear the buzz coming down the grape vine. That FUNimation was cleaning up its act. That the show would no longer be chopped to hell and back. That they were changing voice actors. That they would no longer be using the musical composer from the first two seasons. That everything was changing.
The debut of the third season coincided with one of their birthdays, so I picked up the first of the tapes for him. At his party, we popped it into the VCR, anxiously awaiting an English version of Dragon Ball that faithfully translated the source material… and within a matter of seconds, nobody felt like partying anymore.

I didn’t drop any money on the VHS tapes but I was listening to the grapevine very carefully. The initial impressions were that the dub had gotten worse, and I couldn’t understand how that was even possible. Then clips started to emerge and I saw it for myself.

Funi mainly cause I got adjusted to it and the nostalgia, JP cast is still pretty good, but the main thing that bothers me about both dubs is that they got rid of the japanese music. some scenes just completely lose their impact in the dub cause of lack of a silent background and new music.
plus in the movies, adding shit like pantera and godsmack in the background during fights was the stupidest shit ever.
The only dubbed anime I have a problem listening to is Naruto. Every character sounds weird in English.
If it was a live-action movie, or any foreign film for that matter then yeah, I’d want to watch it in its original language but when it comes to cartoons I don’t really care. Plus with anime its not like the lips are even drawn to sync with what they’re saying, anime characters just open and close their mouths when speaking.
Just wanted to add the same goes for video games too, don’t really mind the voiceovers. eg. I played FFX and 12 both in Japanese and English and I actually liked the English voices more.
The mouth flapping is still synced with the rhythm of the dialogue, which is a big reason why you get really weird line readings in English-dubbed anime from time to time.
When localising anything from one language to another this is how I’d rank things from most important to least.
- Accurate translation. (Sending you to another dimension.)
- Censorships/cuts/edits kept at a minimum or none at all. (DBZ cuts pissed me off a lot more than the voices did.)
- Original soundtrack used. (Where’s cha-la head?).
- Dubbed voices “fitting” the characters.
Voices above soundtrack if it’s live-action, below if it’s a cartoon or videogame.
omg i thought i was the only one that noticed that. i didn’t choose to watch it in english, but i watched the brolly movie with my friends and i was out-voted so i had no choice. the music in the movie overlapped the dialogue which made it hard to hear what was being said:mad:. i felt like i was being tortured. why didn’t funi and ocean just keep the dialogue and bgm the same(america always have to be different). just thinking about how they fucked up 1 of my favorite animes of all time pisses me off
just finished watching piccolo/goku vs radditz again. That fight was so good.
I don’t mind the funi dubs and to be honest i’m the type of person that will watch the dub of any anime if i can help it. I’m not overly critical of dub voices though i do wish they would have kept the Ocean dub Piccolo and Vegeta.
At any rate, I do feel sorry for anyone that had the whole series on DVD already prior to Funimation doing the remastered versions. Plus i’m still laughing at the fact that they already have the GT boxsets done already. Thats one series that i’m not even gonna dignify myself to buy.
i’m sorry i don’t like gay homosexual jap voice actors who sound like little girls that completely don’t match up with the big burly white powerful men on screen
the hidden message of dbz is that the white race is superior. when the asians (the saiyan race) transcended, what did they become? blond haired and blue eyed. super saiyan, more like super aryan. no jap voice actor could ever do justice to the super saiyans.

i love the original japanese feel (effects of the soundtrack) though, too bad they couldn’t replicate that, guess they wanted to make a more light hearted feel to appeal more to children
