remember when trunks met the androids of goku’s time he mentioned to goku that these androids are stronger than the ones in his world
I have a good feeling that dbz will return in some shape or form, i wouldnt know how i would want it to be though? if it would be better with new people? or better with the same people with more emphasize on comedy
I was first introduced DB as a little kid. And I learned of the DBZ dub in fifth grade. Even to this day I think DB is infinitely superior to DBZ in just about every aspect. Unlike DBZ, DB lost ALOT in the english dub so it never had a chance of catching on in america.
I understand where the appeal comes in. It was like nothing the U.S. had ever seen in an animated show. You had to read comics to get some of what DBZ had to offer.
But…DBZ isn’t even good when the fights begin to me. I mean shit, there are alot more dramatic stare downs, talking, powering up (like the scouter, imo, powering up was one of the worst concepts ever introduced) and lame jokes then there is actual fighting.
Not that the fighting stayed fresh. My mind goes directly to the infamous dust clouds that signify every “did I get him!?” moment of DBZ. And the, “they’re moving so fast you can’t see them…this is really just an excuse to cut down on animation costs.” fights.
Another thing that really annoyed me was the whole “You’re not fighting at full strength!” BS. Seriously, the guys fight for like 3 episodes straight, and then they come out with this “I’m holding back!” crap. How many times did Final Frieza said how much of his power he was using? And by the time he reached 100%, it didn’t even matter because SSJ Goku whipped his ass.
With the old characters there is the familiarity of knowing who they are, but Goku’s dead or merged with the Dragon or whatever the fuck happened at the end of DBGT. All that remains is Vegeta, so it can’t necessarily be a continuation.
As long as they can produce Saiyans the series will be fine.
Are you kidding? FUNimation didn’t discriminate between DB and DBZ. Both of them are butchered to hell and back. Very little of what I like in either series made its way into the Americanized versions.
As for the quality of the series, I’d argue that DB took a while before it really picked up steam, and Z maintained that level of quality through at least the first couple of story arcs before it started to slide.
Ahhh yess…the ‘Unwritten Rules of the world of DBZ’
DBZ has always been critisized for it’s powering up sequences…especially when they’re exaggerated to take several episodes (far as i remember the only moves that required more than one episode was the spirit bomb…but spirit bomb is understandable lol) Powering up sequences were never really that long to me…and like someone pointed out earlier…they’re even shorter in the manga. The anime writers I imagined wanted to dramatize it further.
I see where you’re coming from with the ‘they’re moving so fast comment’ but that was also their way of trying to portray how fast these guys were moving…There’s only but so many different ways you can throw a punch or a kick to make it look different and most dbz fights around the time that Saiyan Saga Vegeta starts showing up most punches and kicks have already been done like 2 minutes into the fight. I’m pretty sure that back then animating this show was still a bitch and if they ever decided to redo it…It would probably be even more so today. When I first watched through this show back in Middle/High school days I thought they did a really good job for its time in portraying the power and speed that these guys had when they were going at it. With my experience now you can easily see where these guys took shortcuts and often times when the series suddenly takes a jump in visual quality. As with most Sci-Fi things…you’re supposed to suspend your disbelief…until your lightsaber clashes with a bo staff…then you’re going to have to suspend it twice over.
Unwritten Rules of DBZ:
If someone is powering up…watch them do it instead of doing the logical thing and trying to stop them before they reach full power. Some characters do break this rule (see Super Buu before fighting Gotenks and how Trunks complains about it)
Despite the fact that you can’t see said villian/or person in cloud of dust…assume that they are dead. OR fire fifty thousand or so weaker blasts into the cloud and hope that it hit em because that blast you took 10 minutes to charge didn’t kill him…definitely means that the other thousand significantly weaker blasts will.
When in doubt…blow the planet up (most of the villains will live and die by this)
There were a few more but I can’t think of them at the moment lol
DBZ was always about the imagination, and having a theme based around historical legend brought to the future you have a mix that is rare to find
the powering up nobody ever complained about them around here while it was happening (maybe once or twice) cos we all know we were imagining what would happen next, it was the characters moment and was one thing that GT was missing that acually added to the show, no other show is like DBZ, it was extremely popular for a good reason, a reason in which you dont find in any other manga/anime today (except naruto on a good day)
omg that was soooo hilarious. trunks just said time out. you supposed to wait for the fusion geeeez now don’t move wait for the fusion:rofl:
one of the funniest moments
Bleach takes a lot of elements from DBZ too probably more so in some areas than Naruto. Bleach doesn’t have long power up phases but they still are there. In fact A lot of shonen jump series would probably be different today if it wasn’t for Akira Toriyama’s testosterone filled story. Naruto is sort of like what DBZ would be…cept with Ninjas and without the Dragonball wishes plot device. Personally I think Naruto (as a whole…not talking about filler and I’m including Shippuden in the group) does a better job of handling things than DBZ. Bleach is DBZ…if the good characters NEVER DIED. Not to mention that both those other series do a better job of focusing on other characters other than the main one from what I’ve seen so far…but then again I don’t think the fans are hounding the creators to stretch their stories farther than they wanted them to be…Both from the outset had longevity in mind. I haven’t watched enough One Piece to compare it to DBZ so I’m not sure exactly what elements from the series they took and where they strayed.
I feel the same about that comparison, but how I see it (maybe cos ive hardly watched bleach much) the characters conflicts in naruto are more interesting, naruto has bettered DBZ in making sense of it all(to a certain extent) but what is confusing about it is more deeper than DBZ’s mis-translations. kishi’s been very careful with not powering up people too much and making the science in the fight more important.
no other anime can put as much drama in a hit as DBZ has done, and I know they’ve tried
I’d like to say though that no other anime has fighting quite as beautiful as the street fighter 2 animated movie.
if you believe there is then please show me :wonder:
Does Brutality count as beautiful? If so I’m throwing in Baki the Grappler.
And for drama into a hit that’s comparable to dbz…hmmmm…there’s probably a lot more than you think. I think the build up for the ‘one punch to rule them all’ that Haku took from Naruto after he had just started to go berserk definitely had plenty of drama behind it…
The whole Ichigo vs Byakuya fight I felt had plenty of drama backing it up by that point.
and from what I’ve watched from One Piece…Luffy has no qualms with just waltzing up to anybody he has a problem with and punching them in the face without warning.
oh wait you want me to show you?
…well currently I can’t find the clip of Naruto delivering that punch…it’s entirely too cluttered with amv’s currently for me to shift through that currently…
Edit:
thus I said some characters do break that rule but like 85% of the time they don’t. And even then Vegeta was like…
Vegeta: wait wait hold on! He’s not fully powered up yet so we gotta let him do that!
Trunks:…what are you fuckin nuts!?
Vegeta: tosses him the big book of unwritten dbz rules read that
Trunks: flips through OOHHHHHHhhh…I don’t get it…punches vegeta in the face with the book RAGE!?
Trunks wasn’t able to get the memo cause he was from the future…where everyone else was dead lol. Thus why Kid Trunks knows the rule and Future doesn’t.
yeah I’ve been meaning to check out one piece, i will eventually. but i think what made it easy for dragon ball Z to have that drama is the fact that if someone said they have more power than the next person then you know a big fight is about to happen
^^^^ I don’t know if that’s so much ‘drama’ then ‘my dick is bigger than yours’. The way how I’m thinking…I’m thinking of ‘drama’ as the reasoning behind why the fighting is taking place in the first place and how that translates into the fights.
Yeah i fuckin hated when Vegeta did that shit. Inches away from killing off Cell and he up and decides to let him go Perfect. WTF!!!
Dude would’ve had bragging rights over everyone if he killed off Cell.
that’s the thing, dragon ball z plot was usually really easy to get into but with anime today you NEED to watch from early on to keep your attention.
a place I would show a friend that wanted to get into DBZ i would say watch from a couple of episodes before goku arrived on namek, the viewer get’s to understand the madness of dbz’s villains and heroes and get a firm introduction to the main character of the show.
what episode would be the best to start watching one piece?
For plot purposes Goku is a Naive dumbass(I mean come on, he gave Frieza a million second chances when they fought on Namek.** HE FUCKING MURDERED KRILLIN AND GOKU STILL WAS DUMB ENOUGH TO GIVE HIM A 2ND CHANCE!!!**)
For plot purposes they made Vegeta into a Self-Absorbed, Arrogant, Dumb Ass who won’t pass up a good fight
Both are cop-out’s to give the bad guy a 2nd chance to power up and come back stronger than he was before.
Vegeta did kind of make up for it, when he got mad that Cell killed Trunks, powered up and then shot a blast at Cell during his match with Gohan.
