Hell yes! For one reason: M. Bison. The only part the movie got right. For a realistic mad dictator type with no mystical superpowers, that is so exactly how he’d be! Only more buff and a better fighter.
Raul Julia’s performance steals the show. He was badass, slick, funny, and had great on-screen presence. Some of his dialog was a bit cheesey sure, but with his energy and charisma he just made it work.
All his scenes were pretty awesome such as, when he and chun-li are in the room together. The whole time she is going on about how he killed her father and devoted her life to revenge, and he’s dimming the lights, putting on some smooth music and trying to seduce her haha. What a pimp.
“For me? It was Tuesday”
Only gripe is the fight at the end was kinda one-sided. I was rooting for him beat Guile’s ass, but Van Damme was just wailing on him. Eh he still got in some ok shots.
Other than that, while it otherwise failed as a Street Fighter movie with numerous miscasts, it was still a competently made popcorn action movie in its own right that i still enjoy. Just treat it like a live-action G.I.Joe style flick.
Saw it as a kid, thought it was cool. Saw it years ago, still thought it was cool. It’s definitely got it’s flaws but if you take it lightly, you might actually enjoy it like many people have.
You guys don’t know – I think SF:The Movie is a hilarious troll on purpose. Listen to the commentary! And this is the man who wrote The Running Man and Commando, mind you.
Hey Running Man and Commando are two of Arnold’s finest movies. Proof the guy knows how to do a good action flick. He just didn’t understand the source material i guess and, evidently, no other authority at the time looked at the script and intervened.
Its still a competently made action movie thats a fun ride in its own right.
Hell no. The (first)Mortal Kombat movie remains the best videogame movie ever. It had everything: Followed the story, solid casting, excellent fight scenes, a rocking soundtrack, etc. Even non-fans loved it.
It was everything the Street Fighter movie wished it was, and still holds up today.
Oh that’s what I’m saying, those movies are hilarious and cheesy and silly on purpose, and I’m pretty sure SF is too. I don’t how ppl say it’s bad good … lol he made them goofy on purpose just like Arnold movies. All cinematric triumphs
It follows a story that was all too obviously generated as the backdrop for a game with very little story demands, the actors look like the characters but didn’t bother to act and sleepwalked through almost everything, the fight scenes are lackluster and ham-handed compared to any halfway decent martial arts movie, and while the soundtrack does rock, it is essentially used as an excuse to treat fight scenes like sloppily edited music videos instead of choreographed pieces of action with complete arcs. I’m sure non-fans loved it, but there are plenty of people who like shitty things.
Street Fighter: The Movie wished it was a comedy, and that is essentially what it was. It never imagined itself as a joyless mile-a-minute music video for kids with ADD, and that’s why Street Fighter: The Movie wasn’t Mortal Kombat.
Your perception dude. The acting wasn’t a superb masterpiece of cinema, but it didn’t have to be because it was an action movie. On those terms they more than fulfilled their roles. All of them very were believable, likable, and the casting was great.
You bashing on the fight scenes holds the least credability here. With the exception of Sonya Vs Kano, the other fights were very well-choreographed and badass. You couldn’t have a great mortal kombat movie without great fights and OMG, this one delivered on all counts.
Lots of people like shitty things? Yes and there are just as many who severely lack an appreciation for whats good, based on their own particular bias and lack of perspective. The Nostalgia Critic for example also didn’t like the movie, but look at what movies he does like and his usual material. He is all about comedy and clearly NOT the audience this kind of flick was intended for, and you probably aren’t either. At least we can agree the soundtrack was great.
Again since non-fans who still enjoy martial arts movies loved this one as well, that says something. Unlike most video game movies, this one didn’t need appreciation of the game to enjoy and stood on its own as a stellar martial arts fantasy genre flick.
Furthermore, if this was really not a quality movie, even the fans would have panned it. As evidenced by the extremely disappointing Mk Annihilation, which only did well in its opening weekend until word spread on what a let-down it was. Nowhere near as successful as the first, which is why we didn’t see a Mortal Kombat 3.
^^ Comedy? You liked the movie for all the wrong reasons…
Yeah, it’s actually a nice watch if you don’t let it troll you. It has lots of PG-13 action, jokes and really good one-liners. Don’t take it too seriously and enjoy.
