Maybe this is just people failing to properly punish so far, but it feels like after his DP, as soon as his feet touch the ground, he’s fully recovered, so if your opponent fails to punish you while you’re still airborne, you’re safe. I’ve been catching people with 360 trying to combo me as I touch the ground.
Edit : Meant to say EX version, LP and MP version at least are definitely punishable once he hits the ground.
I was way off here, was definitely just people not punishing properly. The recovery once he’s down is better on the EX version, but it’s still enough to punish with quick moves. To be on the safe side I’m buffering grabs in case their response isn’t fast enough, which has caught a few people.
For n00b-level and laggy on-line play he’ll be a 'Shin ‘Gief’ with his piece-o-piss ways to close the gap and the ‘interesting’ SFIV command-throw mechanic at his disposal.
For intermediates he’ll start to show his weaknesses as the spammy (‘zone-y’) nature of the opposition becomes more prevalent/adept.
At tourny level he’ll have some potential. But as with all most of the SFIV cast, his potential be very match-up specific.
Ultimately, I hope he’s a bit of a ‘Gouken pariah’ and is passed up for more consistently scrub friendly characters. He’s never been a popular character - such is the one-dimensional tastes of today’s short-sighted gaymores - so it bodes well for a character that will only excel in the hands of someone who takes the time to master him. …hopefully.
It’s really early to tell but I’m skeptical about how viable THawk will be based on how easily a lot of his specials get stuffed.
Seems like whenever a character has really unreliable specials that they aren’t very high on the tier list - and THawk has no “fuck you get off me” lariat type move.
Im not getting why people say he cant do anything about backdash. St.rh? Cr.rh? St.fp? Ex spire?
Lack of wakeup options? Reversal ex dp is god like. I think only on reversal you can get the ex dive part out too even if it whiffs. which makes you [almost] perfectly safe (against almost ALL options except HEAVILY anticipated). Think mai in cvs 2 where she does wall bounce then dive in opposite corner
It 100% doesnt have to hit. Been multiple times where Ive got baited to ex dp on wake up, whiffed and still was able to do ex dive. Im almost positive its reversal only though. Cause just whiffing it mid screen does nothing. Just mash 3p after every ex dp anyways is what I do
The more I play this guy and the more scrubs become accustomed to playing keep-away with their projectiles, the more I think my prediction of Hawk is accurate - S-tier Vs n00bs (irrelevant), bad Vs intermediates who know his tricks and useless at higher levels, especially VS FBers.
Right now, if I had to play for my life with a grappler in this game (*not on a death wish - just emphasizing a point!), I’d use 'Gief, hands down… and there’s daylight to Hawk.
T-Hawk will be high C-tier. He will have a few great match ups and some average ones and about 1/3 of the cast will rape him. Gief will probably end up being mid B-tier.
He is competitive.That’s for sure.
He has some very good stuff we already know (stamina, great pokes, usefull command throws,a great safe move like Spire) and also some bad stuff (Condor Dive very unsafe, tomahawk buster also and not good AA and also not good anti air pokes and no FADC in any move)
He is more technical than Gief ofcourse and if he is not so good he can win against Gief more like other characters.
Generally i don’t find Gief a match up for T.Hawk.
i think they are 5-5.
Even it’s a bit too early i think match ups for T.Hawk are Juri and Bison.Since now i haven’t find any problem against Guile and i can tell right now if it’s a match up.
Yeah a lot of the top tier characters are just going to rape Hawk.
As always, the best characters are the best because they have a collection of great normals with good reach/priority, great special moves with better EX versions.
Hawks specials aren’t very good at all - spire is pretty fucking terrible because it’s so ridiculously punishable on block OR hit (hello capcom?) - you have to space it just right just to be neutral (i’m not even sure if there’s a distance that actually gives you advantage).
Condor dive is so punishable that it won’t be seen or used much outside of shenanigans (intentional whiffs for SPD setup, etc.)
