Is Ryu a good pocket character?

I am a Rose main and I have been subbing Ryu for a while. In your honest opinion, should players always have a pocket Ryu ready for battle. Is there any real benefits from using Ryu and another character as well? Your thoughts

It’s generally not a bad idea to have a pocket character to cover your bad match-ups here and there. Ryu is a good pocket for just about anyone, imo.

Yeah I was just thinking about how hard the Rufus match up is as Rose…feels almost like a 8-2. And how Infiltration counterpicks with Ryu against several Rufus players. Where can I find information on this match up on the Ryu forums?

The first few posts of this thread have tons of match-up knowledge for Ryu. Scroll down a bit for Rufus.

thanks. I don’t play AE that much anymore. Tbh I just come back for Rose.

I actually started playing Ryu on SFxT recently. But I still think that doesn’t really matter if I wanna sub him on AE. or can I apply plenty of my SFxT Ryu knowledge here as well?

To be honest, I haven’t touched SFxT once except during the beta stages at EVO 2011, but I personally wouldn’t apply too much knowledge from SFxT ryu to AE ryu. Fundamentally, I know anti-airs and shoryukens are treated a bit differently in SFxT in general, plus all the frame data isn’t the same. It’s mostly the reason why I don’t play Viper in both Marvel and AE, because I played Viper for so long in SF4, and then Marvel makes her thunder knuckle a completely different input (and obviously everything is way faster and different in Marvel).

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t play the same character in more than one game, but don’t treat the character as if whatever game you’re playing didn’t matter. If you try to play AE Guile like Super Turbo Guile, you’re going to get crushed.

Indeed. I know the links on AE are definitely more tight. I blame my ex girlfriend for introducing me to Ryu as a character. lol never played him on past SF titles like that. So I guess going back and forth from a game where I sub this character to a game I main him is going to be tricky. So I didnt know his AA game was different on both games that something I gotta explore and see the differences. I am mostly learning Ryu on AE for the divekick character match ups which I feel Rose is pretty free to them.

Ryu may be a good main but i dont think hes good for a side char, there are better options. Ryu isnt THAT GOOD against anyone in the cast, its better to pick someone that is 6.5-3.5 against some of your main’s bad matchups than someone that will be 5-5 against these same chars.

I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion so fast.

When you have a bad mach up as your main, you LEARN that match-up. You use your exceptional knowledge in that match up to give yourself the edge back and balance out the difference in character power. If you have a pocket Guile, I really don’t think you will do exceptionally with him vs a main Bison (Dictator). Why, because Bison KNOWS the Guile matchup out of necessity and unless he sucks he will be battle-hardened and trained for your second-rate Guile. It might as well be a 5-5 matchup in that case if not worse, so why not consider a different character?

I mean, obviously if you train Guile very far you can start exploiting the matchup for an advantage once you reach that higher-level of play. The problem is that until then, you still have to work as about hard as you would with another character. What happens if you fight a Bison that has a strong Ibuki alternate? That match becomes dangerous and you could randomly lose from getting forced to play bad matchups in a character-switching series of games.

What I’m saying is, since you might not get much of a matchup-advantage from your pocket character until you get them to a near-main level, you might as well pick a character you would like to use as an alternate main (being that you consider ALL of that char’s matchups).

**** I think the best way to pick a second character is to pretend your main is your second and pick a character who’s weak matchups is covered by your main instead of the other way around. *****

I think having a second character that is 5-5 for your bad matchups is a perfectly fine way to go, since you can spend more time trying to train a fighter that you can use vs the rest of the cast. Then, when you go into a tournament starting with your second, imagine how hype it will be when you run into a bad matchup and switch to your main…

Also, hello Ryu forums. Very recently after trying many other seconds I’ve been finding Ryu very fun. I am also trying to learn stick and switching to a new character is really helping me feel like the stick isn’t holding me back since I’m working on both at once for the first time. : )

I don’t think Ryu is a very good counter against Rufus with the buffs Rufus got in 2012 this match up is about even now. I think picking Ryu as a pocket is stupid to be completely honest. Literally everyone and their fucking mom knows the Ryu match up so good luck with that.

Ryu is a good character for auto pilot, as you can zone very good and play very defensive. Sirlin (http://www.sirlin.net/ptw) sais that you should have such a char in your arsenal to get easy wins against scrubs, so you do not get tired very quickly in long tournaments.

Depending on what you are going for, I would not suggest Ryu as a pocket character.

[]Everybody knows the Ryu matchup very good.
[
]Ryu depends on quite some matchup knowledge and a lot of yomi.
[]It is very easy to get too defensive and / or predictable if you do not play Ryu regularly.

Still playing Ryu has its benefits.

[
]You get very good fundamentals.
[]You have to play properly with lots of footsies and zoning, because of the limited tool set of Ryu.
[
]No one has an excuse to lose against you, because everybody **should **know the matchup.

in my opinion Ryu as a pocket character is good only to VERY hard matchups for your main, but on the other hand, playing him you can easily be downloaded

Ryu is actually a good sub for Akuma (IF you learn the matches obv) - he goes even or is advantaged against all of Akuma’s bad matchups (mainly Viper & The Divekicks), and Ryu-Akuma is a pretty stable matchup compared to the Akuma mirror.

I main ryu and have a pocket-cammy for my bad matchups

if you’re struggling with certain matchups, if you’re a Ryu it must be Sim, either way Seth is probably a better choice he doesn’t lose to anybody and he flat-out rape a lot of characters.

well dee jay is a bad matchup for ryu too…feels hard if not harder then the sim matchup
i actually love fighting sims…dee jays, guiles and rogs are a pain in the as for me

I haven’t encountered many djs what makes it so hard?

find on the leaderboards or rankings some 15k BP Dee Jays and ask them politely to fight you in endless, and you’ll see
