Is KoF XII really that bad?

Just get it. Well, wait to see what the final verdict is on the online play, then grab it.

There’s no story mode. There are no endings. There are only 8 more characters than BlazBlue has. (Get it?) They completely changed my favorite character. The sprites aren’t as clean as BB.

I love it.

It’s just what KOF needed.

King of Faeries XII only has one thing going for it, and that it always makes you question your sexuality when you play it. Seriously, my sexuality did an ambiguous cross-up on me when I accidently picked Ash Crimson and I realized Iori is wearing something even Ricky Martin wouldn’t even wear.

In all honestly, the closest thing I’ve gotten to an SNK game is CvS2. Unfortunately in all honestly I’d rather play that.

This game is one of the smooooothest feeling fighting games i’ve played. It’s a smoooth operator.
Perfect? No. Personallly i like KoF 98 UM, and the gripes i got with XII one are the same ones i got with sf 4: they seem to have stripped down all the sub systems they’ve been building up to, only to introduce one new mechanic. But that’s cool though, because as a versus Fighting Game it is extremly fun and competitive.

Did i mention how smooth it feels?

Truth.

Today I popped the game in for the first time. I spent the first hour bitching about the lack of stages. I then bitched at how much of a pain in the ass it was to change controls for 2 players (What a joy this will be at tournaments) I then bitched about the moveset, the lack of supers, etc.

7 hours later I was like. “Why the fuck am I still playing this? Holy shit I’m hungry.”

It’s a great fighting game, just a shitty product as far as console games go.

Oh by the way, before I make a new thread. **Does ANYONE know **how I can change controls for Player 1 and Player 2 without it changing it for both? When I changed my button maps in a VERSUS match for P1, it affected P2, and vice versa. It makes no goddamn sense.

Same issue got me
Basicly, you have to save your controls in those Sets (A, B, C, etc) and each player has to be under a different set for the controls to be different.

1st) Set your types of controls under a different set
2nd) Set Controller 1’s button set, then press RB/R1 to go to Controller 2’s controls and change it to a different set (the number applies to what order controllers are synced)

Took me 10 minutes to figure out, I set one for pad (my brother) and one for Neogeo (myself)

Yeah, I agree. I still think the game feels unfinished, and I would kill an entire field of puppies, kittens, and a nearby orphanage to be able to play Kula in this game, but it’s fun. I can’t deny that.

The size of the roster (and characters there within) and the lack of more stages sucks complete ass, real talk.

:smokin:

the game feels unfinished because each character takes like 3 months time invested to animate. in my opinion the system/movelists aren’t stripped down as a return to form, they’re stripped down because it’s hard to animate 2-3 more moves for 10 more characters and have it released before hyper street fighter 4 double upper dub edition remix. same goes with the stages…but in that regard I’m upset that of the whole 6 you’re presented with, only 2 or 3 are playable without your eyes bleeding out.

in spite of all of that I feel like this game presents a solid foundation. the menu screen prominently features a playstation store option, and I can almost guarantee you snk will be updating the game via DLC rather than release more 60 dollar bombshells. my hopeful child’s heart is willing to bet you’ll see a story mode and a couple more teams/solo entries by christmas.

additionally, am I the only one that feels like the stages are too wide? I think closer quarters would make things more interesting.

The game itself is great, but damn even by KOF standards its lacking in content.

That doesnt matter to me though, its a great fighter that I dont have to unlock characters in before getting to the fun part.

I played it some of today. A few things struck me. I swear I’ve played this game before… oh wait, it’s Rumble Fish 2.

Also, the interface, and all of the control scheme setup is bullshit, we had setting one control scheme resetting everyone else to default.

So, after that it took like 20 minutes to get into a match, and I was playing of my KoF98 teams… only to find that the characters seem to handle worse now, and on top of that… their normals are fucked. Okay, that’s just a matter of getting into the game.

Character selection: what

just what

wolverine iori
eyepatch mature
…and hurrdurr elisabeth and no fucking vice (does anyone like this elisabitch? no one even played her today and people played like 50+ games)

I dunno. it looks like it could be fun, but honestly the critical counter system just seems like it’s even dumber than the revenge gauge in SF4… because this is literally counterhit -> stupid damage fo fraaaay.

idk, kofailure 12 could’ve been good, but… it just wasn’t.

guess that’s why they made almost everyone’s CC starter a retardedly small hit…you’re going to have to get in to get the hit. they don’t seem to happen all that often…at most twice in one full match, and normally it seems rare to just get one in a full 3v3…

First time a playing KoF game(i have garou) and it’s fun!! Isn’t that what counts?

I really don’t get all of the complaints. A brand spanking new hand drawn fighting game. Very even characters, with team based, so there’s no such thing as a completely tier land slided fight. Good systems introduced, I’m loving Critical Counter, though some people are kinda depending on it right now with the lag.

The game started out with online lobbies and clan options (ps3).

Only downfall I’m seeing right now is the lagging and that’s supposed to get worked on by what? Tuesday? (for ps3)

CC:

  • Bar can be gained by blocking, hitting someone, getting your moves blocked, not just by getting hit
  • Limited time to land it, so you can’t sit on it
  • Can only be activated by landing a counter-hit (aka someone was attacking when they shouldn’t)
  • The move that activates it is not invincible in any way, just a normal move, so it can’t be used when you’re in a defensive situation
  • It can’t be comboed into, or used vs an airborne opponent

I’d list the counter-point with revenge/ultra, but you already know how those work. Nothing broken about CC in KOFXII…in fact, it’s the least broken ‘custom combo’ system I’ve ever seen in a game. Hell with good players, sometimes they never even happen in a match. Online with mashers? Of course, gonna happen every round. CC = masher killer.

I’m popping off a mini review and this was the whole point. Game looks sexy and the gameplay is fire but you’re not getting $60 worth of content.

I really hate all these complaints about the extra stuff you should get.Yeah cause fighting games should be based on how many stages and extra stuff they have right, no. I’m sure at EVO picking the jungle stage is what made daigo win because he loves that stage, no. Also I don’t think people get the fact it was all HAND DRAWN , which means its gonna take some time but its gonna look great in the end with just a little less content. They kept it old school and I love that. I prefer looking at these sprites anyday over SF4 3d models. Also seriously look at critical counter/deadlock/special particle effects, they are way better than sf4 which is funny because they used 3d. I don’t care that people at sf4 can move a camera around in 3d space.

Also I don’t know about the rest of you but anytime I play this game I go hm… who’s a good counter pick, oh wait… I can’t find one because this game, to me, is amazingly balanced. Everyone can deadlock with something, guard attack, roll out of fireballs, do all the jumps, everything the same. Unlock like SF4 where there are clear terrible matchups like blanka vs about everyone who can counter after a blocked blanka ball, who the hell came up with that idea??? Not to even mention some characters i.e. dhalsim who even if you HIT him with a blanka ball can still counter hit after, that’s just freaking retarded.

Ending my rant saying, I love KOF XII.

MY GOD! THIS IS THE WORST KOF GAME EVA!! if you play 98, 2k2 or xi hardcore, then kof xii will be extremely frustrating. each character has 1 DM?? are you fucking serious!?!?

edit: the game is really pretty, but it lacks “kof greatness!” you know people, i like change. but kof xii change is TOO much 4 me.

Well, in terms of fighting, I think SFIV’s engine is slightly better. Even though Ryu only has 3 moves, the Ex/Super gauge system allows him to be played in a large variety of ways. With the KOF characters it’s pretty much what you see is what you get with their move lists. But the fact you have to play in teams of 3 cancels that out.

And if you are talking Revenge meter versus Critical Counters, I would also have to give a nod to SFIV. Even though characters like Rufus could combo into their Ultra every time, thanks to damage scaling, the opponent player will still have enough life left and their own full Ultra ready to stage a comeback. Even though Critical Counters are a lot harder to land, Thanks to 60 second timer and no damage scaling, it’s slightly harder to stage a comeback in this game versus SFIV. But maybe that’s intentional, I’m not sure.

Other than that, I would say KOF XII is a better game if you really demand balance, and don’t like characters that can spam safe attacks all day, or tick throws. The beauty of this game is that since nothing is truly safe, you really have to be creative to win. If you’re the type of player that just wants to main top tier and think you’re gonna beast like Daigo, you definitely will not like this game.

i agreee

The reason I do not complaint is because this is a reboot. They laid out a PERFECT ground work to start the series over, and can only go forward from here. My biggest complaint stems from the roster. I understand, they had to re-draw and re-animate everyone, but they added some characters in there that have no business being in a KoF in place of others(Chin…and not King? Raiden and no Mai? No K’?) Aside from that though, I’m not one to cry over stuff like this and will use what I’m given, and what I was given, online play aside, is great.

Honestly- this is how I feel.

The core game is better then SF4. Balance is better then SF4 also. The problem is that the characters are too limited in many cases, especially if you’re used to their prior incarnations. It’s not so much a lack of characters as it is many of the characters seeming to be one special move short of being complete. If you’re coming in with no KOF experience, you’ll likely enjoy this game more. SNK is really in good shape for the next installment, provided they don’t change the system much and just add content. Part of the problem is some SNK folks, including myself, expected the holy grail, and didn’t get it.

If SNK fixes the online, I’ll look forward to KOF13. KOF12 is not as good as 98UM, but then again, very few games are.
