I’m just curious. Pre-HDR, what sort of numbers were ST tourneys getting? I don’t mean at majors, or on GGPO or whatever, I mean the standard little tourneys that popped up all over the place. Because it seems to me that ST was never much more than a game that showed up at majors and some people would play for like, 10 years now. Hell, the one ST tourney we had that had any sort of turnout before HDR had like 11 people, and only two of them were really ST tournament players. The rest of us were people who dicked around with the game in casuals and people who had some downtime between 3s and CvS2 matches.
If HDR isn’t bringing in huge numbers in smaller events but still gets the turnout at majors, then I don’t really see much a problem…that’s just how SF2 has been.
Pre-HDR it still got played in casuals at nearly every gathering I went to. Part of that time includes HSF2 though.
As far as tournaments. I held two tournaments for it in the last 3 years and had 5 people enter one and 0 in the other. l
2009 EVO… SF4 entrants x 1200… HDR entrants x 300+… I don’t think any other game even came close.
I see a lot of curiosity from new players when the play casual HDR… I mean after all, it is the foundation SF2. Most people will stick to their favorite genre but wont’ compete in HDR because the loyal ST players will always be there. It goes vice versa, ST players will play casuals in MvC, SF4, etc. but most won’t invest time to compete in it. So to increase participation, I often do $1 tournies just to get the non-serious HDR players to come out.
Its really not hard. If you come to Evo I’ll show you the trick. Hell, I’ll tell you now - just do the motion really fast.
Once you can do that ST Fei will open up to you. I mean, he can combo off that shit on the ground. Way more fun than HDR Fei.
Evo re-evaluates all game selections each year, there is no ‘default’ lineup, so there are no games to replace.
