he has 2 normals that do 2 hits (i.e focus attack destroyers) st.HP and cr.HP
his dives still work
he has an amazing frame trap now st.LP now that its +4 on block into MP or MK … not to mention it can be true stringed now
alot of moves (an i mean ALOT ) can be punished with LK dive on block now … and that scores you a knockdown enough for an MK oil
his super is the best anti air in the game period
his anti airs are wonky but they acctually do work … granted they arent the best in the game and they aint no shoryu … but its better than nothing … and if you know hakan … sometimes the best option isnt to anti air … but to under cross for the whiff punish … which is still possible without oil …
he can still hit confirm from standing LPs or LKs …
his LP slide still goes under projectiles
still has an air throw … free LK oil and a setup …
granted hes not the best … be he sure as hell aint helpless … the only acctual heavy difference is his poor range on rocket and the inability to FADNC …
but …you can do just fine without them …
his air to air is great …
all you need is one knockdown and you get your momentum back …
you cant talk about hakan being dry 100 % of the time or oiled 100% of the time because thats not how he works … hes a little bit of both …
im fairly new to the character compared to alot of the heads here … but i know what im talking about…
personally, my struggle is not with when to oil … or if im oiled or not … my struggle is mainly matchup experience … oil or not …
for example :
cammy: at high level i think she hurts hakan bad. her dive pressure is verry difficult for him to brush off especially with fakes, frame traps etc … cammy just has a really good rushdown … that indirectly affects his oil up chances … since she would always be in his face …plus her damage output is scary …
u need to bare in mind … hakan is not user friendly …
oil or no oil … he requires some of the most precise timings and excecutions i have come accross in this game …
his setups are really frame tight … this again has nothing to do with oil… its how he works …
granted … with oil he gets some edge …
but you still need alot of skill to acctually make that oil work ! and i mean ALOT !! … i think everyone here can agree that they come accoss excecutional hichups … even the pros … and its devastating sometimes … because it either kills your offensive flow, or destroys your comeback potential … hakan is not low tier cuz hes crap … hes low tier because he’s hard as hell to use …
I mean, why do you think there’s only a couple of top class Hakan players in the world?
Bakkd, do you even use/main Hakan? If you do, and anyone else that’s learning or wanting to get better with Hakan, they should take a step back and go for a little Hakan history lesson. You need to go back to the days of Super, this is where Hakan was oiled less than he wasn’t. Now, if you watch Wildcat, (you can find ALL these videos on youtube) what you witness most of the time is a masterclass in using Hakan unoiled. The guy practically showed, showed EVERYONE that Hakan could be solid without Oil.
The sad thing is even then people still complained, moaned etc. Hakan players need to look back at these videos, they’re all online to see. I still go back myself and watch them for inspiration. If you want to to get better, you need to study these videos, look at spacing and use of normals, and work on your fundamentals. Hakan’s a wonderful character to watch when used properly, but one/two people in the world doing so isn’t good enough. That’s no disrespect to the guys working hard with their Hakan game right now, but in an overall sense, 95% of the Hakans I see, that have been using him for a while, it just isn’t good enough.
BTW Emp - watched your latest replay against Ryu, I see improvement! Good stuff
i was about to post my update in the “how does it feel to play low tier?” … is it the one that got me to 7000 bp ?
i am getting the hang of him …
like i think vs shotos i kinda know what works and what doesnt now … obviously still got alot of work to do … but its really paying off …
which brings me to a crazy idea i was thinking of … i need to show it to you online though … its like … a new dimention to the mixup altogether LOL
its next to my name on the leader boards , ill keep it there till you see it or anyone else who wants to see how im progressing
i can use all the advice you guys can give me
by the way … ive been hurting alot of dhalsims lately …
i might make a writeup on how to deal with him and juri … since technicly i have experience with those two …
I’ve mained Hakan since Super. I’ve seen all of Wildcats videos, always impressed by his Super play. I’m subscribed to your channel as well and I follow your tips and tricks as much as possible. I have at the moment 2500+ PP and around 5500BP so I’m at least decent. You don’t get my point. Saying that you need to be a beast of a player to play Hakan well doesn’t change the fact that he’s horrible without oil and that making him a little better is only fair. I’m not trying to stir something up, I’m just saying that Hakan’s odds unoiled could be a little higher, no?
I’m serious. I just feel that he could be a little better. I don’t see why its so hard to accept my opinion. Some people find Hakan a-tier with oil, some people find him horseshit regardless of oil or not, so what’s so wrong with mine?
It would make sense within the characters design to do a lot more damage unoiled. Considering when he squeezes the opponent he should be able to get more pressure on them before they ‘pop’ out. They shoot further and fall harder. Sorta a balance to the crap range of his dry 360.
That’s what I’ve been trying to say. I love Hakan, otherwise I wouldn’t have played as him for such a long time. But just because he’s my favorite doesn’t mean that I can’t dislike a few things with him.
Rofl, I made a thread awhile ago, people ignored the thread and bashed me instead. So when I tried to defend myself I ended up with a warning and the thread got closed. Oh well, let’s stay on topic instead. Going to quote Drew again since his post makes a whole lot of sense.
Lol man chill, no need for hate. I posted an image that I thought would make people laugh; that’s not being, “…on the prowl to blow something up for no reason.” nor is it getting upset because someone called my favorite character bad.
Bakkd, I went back and re-read your post that I quoted. I would disagree that he is “horrible” dry. Yes, he is much better wet, but (imo) he is not horrible dry. In my brief tenure playing Hakan, I have realized that, upon scoring a knockdown, the Hakan player is offered a choice: continue the pressure with mixups (oil dive setups, safe slides, etc.) or to keep the oil flowing. It is definitely more than possible to continue on the offensive even after becoming dry. I am of the opinion that oil makes his defensive game better (parry becomes an option, he can EX slide through fireballs at full screen, moving CC, etc.). Given this, if the pressure is already on, it is a completely viable tactic to forgo oil and continue to press the attack.
I’ve subbed Hakan since Super and he’s honestly playable dry, people are just completely put off him because he’s better oiled and you need to find time to DP to get oiled.
Just because you can oil doesn’t mean that you’re useless without it. Sure Vega is no where near as good without his claw, but he can still deal some damage until he gets the opportunity to pick it up, I’m sure plenty of Vegas have won games clawless.
Really Hakan only needs the oil for his big combos/mix ups, dry works fine for half the game.
I try stay oiled because of the Focus shenanigans but overall Hakan is a lot more solid than people give him credit for.
I have to disagree with this. The oil is used for way much more, his grab is almost useless without the oil and don’t forget how it adds range to a bunch of his moves. Also ex slide.
And what do you do in a footsie game when you don’t have meter? His grab without oil actually has really high priority, and his slide is usable, it just doesn’t have the range. He’s worse without oil, there is no doubt about that, but that doesn’t mean he’s completely unplayable.
